‘TRACES OF MERCY’ the first in The Medallion Trilogy, is impossibly difficult to put down as you immerse yourself into this fascinating tale of a woman with amnesia and an enigmatic past. It is a satisfying mixture of warmth and hope, of turmoil and drama, and of unabated intrigue. With the infusion of a charismatic and heart-rending romance, this is a book that will captivate you easily and swiftly!

It’s 1865 and the Civil War has finally come to an end to the cheers of the Union soldiers. Not long afterwards, in St. Louis, an unconscious man was brought to Doctor Abe Johnson to treat. To his great surprise, he soon discovers that his patient was in fact a woman. This mysterious woman is diagnosed as having amnesia, remembering absolutely nothing of her past, including her name. The only clue she has is an Our Lady of Mercy medallion found around her neck. It is because of the medallion that she is given her new name ‘Mercy’ by Mother Helena when the confused young woman comes to stay at the convent for a time.

Mercy feels lost and alone and desperately wants to find out who she really is. Soon after, when the handsome Rand Prescott comes into her life, Mercy begins to wonder if she should forget her prior life and only concentrate on her future. However, a friend of the Prescott’s arrives in town and seems to recognize Mercy. But what dangerous and volatile secrets might his suspicions uncover? And will this help any of Mercy’s memory to be restored? Ultimately, is it going to be possible for the beautiful but troubled Mercy to create new memories with Rand despite her disturbing past?

I've read a great deal of historical/romance fiction, and I have found this novel to be not only compelling reading but refreshingly unique and unpredictable. It has the power to stimulate your emotions with varying intensities including nail-biting suspense moments. This is an all-round exemplary story by two very talented authors. ‘Traces of Mercy’ has easily made it onto my list of favorite releases for 2013!

Yankee in Atlanta
by Jocelyn Green
River North; New Edition editon (June 1, 2014)

Reviewed by Noela Nancarrow
~5 Stars~ *****

“God bless the women and the hardships they endured”, writes author Jocelyn Green. While this powerful novel intermittently dismounts upon the Civil War battlefields, this story is really about the courageous heroines behind the lines and the impact this war bore on them. Jocelyn proficiently and expressively pens an emotive journey into the Civil War era that encompasses families torn apart, the bombardment of shells and musket-fire; terrifying riots; gnawing hunger; reckless disease and injury; prejudices; and the taxing scarcity of sleep and strength. But mostly it is an entrancing story of hope and love amidst destruction, and the survival and victory of the battle-worn yet courageous heart and spirit.

Yankee soldier Caitlin McKae awakens in Atlanta, wounded and recovering from typho-malarial fever. The charade of presenting as a man is over, but she’s now stuck in enemy territory! For the sake of her very life it’s critical she keeps secret that she was a Union soldier. When Caitlin finds need of accommodation, she grasps an opportunity to make a new life in Atlanta as a governess to the beloved daughter of sole-parent Noah Becker. Noah, who is a German immigrant lawyer, enlists with the rebel army leaving his daughter in the care of Caitlin. When the Yankee’s move closer to Atlanta, will Caitlin have her chance to escape the danger that the South represents to her? And when Noah discovers the truth, will duty or love, prevail?

In New York, the character of Ruby - an Irish immigrant mother with a traumatically painful past, laid hold of my heart as she questions if she can ever truly leave the past behind and hope for more. It is with her, and Edward who is in a class above the maid Ruby but loves her all the same, that we see some of the stark differences between the North and the South. Caitlin’s plate was empty and Ruby’s, full. But in both lives, there remains fear, hurts, and a love that threatens to either tear or heal their hearts.

This is a Civil War story with enormous heart, effortlessly capturing your senses and absorbing you into the lives of the strong, yet vulnerable characters that Jocelyn has skilfully created. Historical figures that played a vital role in the war also appear in this exceptionally researched novel. Likewise, many notable Civil War events are seamlessly interwoven into ‘Yankee in Atlanta’ - all of it making this novel, an overall feast of stirring history featuring two achingly beautiful love stories.

Teresa Mathews Reviews The Officer's Daughter by Marian Baay

Helping Hand Press

A Civil War Story With a Serving of Sweet Romance

Once again I am thrilled beyond words to have had the pleasure of reading the latest book by Dutch author Marian Baay. This tale takes us back in time to 1864 where we meet up with the 10th Minnesota Infantry camped outside Nashville, Tennessee awaiting word of their next battle.

Andrew Burns, Captain in the 10th Minnesota Infantry is a man that takes no nonsense from the men that serve under him. Most of his men respect him for helping fight this cause even though he was born in Canada but there are a few that give him trouble. One that troubles him in particular is Private Calvin Mitchell; there seems to be something different about that boy.

Private Calvin Mitchell is not at all what "he" seems to be and "he" hopes that no one has to know the secret "he" is keeping under wraps! What's a girl supposed to do when all of her family has deserted her because of this horrible war?  When her youngest brother left her to join the fight, she decided to put on the facade of a young boy and charge into the face of the enemy too!  She hopes she can keep up this front; she is getting a lot of taunting from the other soldiers for her shyness, good thing they don't know the truth! Everything is going well until she is slightly wounded in battle.

When Captain Burns confronts Calvin about refusing to remove his shirt for treatment, he just thought the youth was awkward and shy, never once did he imagine there was a beautiful girl under those baggy clothes! Calvin tells the Captain she is an officer's daughter, but she refuses to disclose her name or who her father is and she begs him to keep her secret. Reluctantly Captain Burns agrees, until the day Private Mitchell is sent on a simple errand with another soldier and doesn't come back. Could it be true that Private Mitchell is dead? Andrew has to find her...she can't be dead; not the beautiful nameless woman that has haunted his dreams since that fateful night when he discovered her secret!

This is a story that easily wove its way into my heart; I found I couldn't put it down until I had devoured the last enthralling word. If you are looking for a truly engaging story then look no further, this is the one! Thanks Ms. Baay, for another story that has found a place in my heart!

GIVEAWAY: We are giving away two copies of this great story! Leave a comment and your email and you might be one of our blessed winners!

Love and Secrets on the Battlefield

We know war is brutal and often void of hope and life. But Marian Baay’s Civil War romance, ‘The Officer’s Daughter’, brings a burst of light to the dark ugliness of the Civil War. In this highly engaging novella, we read of a sweet and unexpected romance found on the battlefield – the last place one would ever imagine to find love!

Colonel Brady, having long lost his wife, brought up one of his six sons and his only daughter mostly without a woman’s influence. Is it any wonder the daughter was very much a tomboy? When her father and brothers departed to fight in the war, she was left behind and alone. So she did what any tomboy would do in that situation; she sold the farm animals, donned a disguise, and joined the army as well!

Captain Andrew Burns discovers the truth of the incognito soldier in his regiment but is smitten by her charms and dark, glittering eyes, and concedes to keep her secret. However, when a safe assignment goes awry for this soldier and Corporal Shane Dean, it’s not only her secret that’s in danger, it’s her very life.

Marian Baay has written an arresting story that wrapped me in the lives of these characters. Truly captivating, it is simply not a story you can lay down until it’s finished. Located in Nashville in the year 1864, ‘The Officer’s Daughter’ gives us a glimpse into some of the trials and battles of this heartbreaking war. It also provides a beautiful tale that gifts hope and life. I can’t wait to read more stories from my newest favorite author!

Review of Tamera Kraft's Debut Release "Soldier's Heart" by Carrie Fancett Pagels

Soldier's Heart by Tamera Lynn Kraft

Blurb: Noah Andrews, a soldier with the Ohio Seventh Regiment can’t wait to get home now that his three year enlistment is coming to an end. He plans to start a new life with his young wife. Molly was only sixteen when she married her hero husband. She prayed every day for him to return home safe and take over the burden of running a farm.
But they can’t keep the war from following Noah home. Can they build a life together when his soldier’s heart comes between them?
150 years ago the history of America changed forever. Live 1863 through the stories of some of our finest writers – the passion, the romance, the tragedy, and the triumph.

My review: Parents should be aware that this would be more of a PG rating or even a PG-13 dependent upon how conservative a parent you are.  However, that being said, this is a realistic look at how Post Traumatic Stress disorder can affect someone.  In this case, Tamera Lynn Kraft is addressing specifically "Soldier's Heart" or PTSD caused by military service and surviving terrible combat situations. This is a historical not a historical romance as Noah and Molly were married when she was only 16 and he 20.  Now three years later, he has finished his commission as Sargent  and returned home to Ohio.

The young couple tries to begin their lives together while he is overcoming the terror brought on by losing his men in an ambush. This is a fairly quick read--I read it in one night.  But it is not a light read. This is a 25,000 word novella but the reader can quickly lose herself in the read--like I did!

Scriptural elements are brought in about a quarter of the way into the story and I think that was a good strategy because we are at first immersed into Noah's reaction to being home from war. And his spiritual arc requires him recapturing, and growing in, his faith.

Lots of nice historical details or "jewels" we history geeks like to say! You'll be nicely grounded into Noah's and Molly's world in Civil War era Ohio.

Bibliotherapy: This story could be used for bibliotherapy for family members of soldiers who've seen combat duty or for the military members themselves.  This is one of the most thorough coverages I've seen in fiction.

Giveaway: Kindle copy of Tammy's novella to one of our commenters.  Do you have a loved one who has seen combat?

Heaven Is Not Far

Stardust Romance, Sept. 2013

Lovely Fiction Debut!

I predicted some time ago that our resident editor (for Kok in the Netherlands), Marian Baay, would eventually write her own stories. And what a nice way to combine her knowledge of all things Dutch than by having a Dutch hero in her short story ‘Heaven Is Not Far.’

It is only fitting that Marian place immigrant Albert Van Ampting in Michigan—for Michigan had many Dutch immigrants, particularly in lower Michigan. After meeting Michelle Lefevre, Albert quickly woos and marries her in a sweet courtship.

Albert obeys God's call to fight in America's Civil War, taking his beloved dog, Jessie with him. The couple exchange letters. The last one is written by another soldier, urging Michelle to come quickly as Albert has only a short time to live.

Lovely story with a great twist at the end that will leave you smiling. But expect a few tears along the way!

In this hauntingly beautiful love story we are introduced to Albert Van Ampting a young immigrant from the Netherlands.  Albert left his homeland to come to America in hopes of starting a new prosperous life and perhaps find a bride. Traveling with other Dutch immigrants that were headed to a Dutch Colony in Michigan, even though they are used to a harsh weather they decide to stay the winter in Detroit and move on to the Colony in the spring. That was to be a life changing decision for Albert.

As Albert and his loving companion, a red Irish Setter named Jessie are out exploring Detroit, Albert notices the most breathtakingly beautiful girl he has ever seen. She had thick brown hair worn in a braid and adorned with a wreath of branches with orange berries. Albert finds that very intriguing and yet it somehow seems to fit her. When Albert gets up the nerve to speak to this angel in human form, he finds out her name is Michelle LeFevre. She helps her mother and sister run the family fabric shop since her father’s death.

It doesn’t take long for Albert and Michelle to fall in love and get married. When a few short months have past Albert feels God is calling him to serve in the war that is going on between the states, he tries to resist it but while reading his Bible, the scriptures start to speak to his heart and he knows he has to obey God. He can’t help but wonder how Michelle will take the news. Will he be able to trust that God will bring him back to her?

Marian Baay has written such a charming story that touches your very soul, it is hard to believe that this is her debut novel. Bravo! Marian this was certainly a job well done!!  I am hoping to see more from you in the near future.

A Beautiful and Inspirational Story

Promising new author Marian Baay, writes her debut fiction story ‘Heaven Is Not Far’ with flair, and the proficiency of a more accomplished writer. This is a beautiful love story that embraces the heart that’s called to serve God and the strength of a deep and passionate devotion between a man and the love of his life.

Handsome Albert Van Ampting has travelled to America from the Netherlands with his faithful Irish Red Setter Jessie, to begin a new life in this new land of great promise. He is headed for the Holland colony in Michigan with the other Dutch immigrants; however they are delayed in Detroit due to bad weather. Deciding to spend the winter in Detroit, Albert needs to look for work and while searching for employment, he discovers something of a far greater worth at the Mercantile. Capturing his attention and his heart was the exquisitely beautiful young woman, Michelle Lefevre, who completely mesmerizes and enchants Albert. The following day he obtains a job and soon thereafter begins a breathtaking courtship with Michelle who became his ‘heaven on earth’ and his devoted wife.

Although he was not required to join the fight, it’s not long before Albert feels the calling from God to enlist in the battle between the States. The raw, penetrating pain of separation from his beloved new wife is only eased a little by the knowledge that it was the Lord that had called him, and that Jessie was able to accompany him to the harrowing battlefield. He keeps in touch with Michelle through heartfelt letters, but in July of 1863, having been severely wounded and with fever rampaging through his body, his last letter to his wife was written by a fellow soldier as Albert dictated to him. Michelle is encouraged by that soldier to come quickly to say her farewell. When Michelle finally arrives, will she be too late to say goodbye to the love of her life?

The strength and beauty of this captivating short story is found in the endearing and vivid characters, the romance that purely sizzles, and the well-executed story that effortlessly flows from page to page. An inspiring message of following your calling, rounds off this compelling story by Marian which was an absolute pleasure to read. Waiting in anticipation of Marian Baay’s next story!!

Deeply Moving Debut!

In Heaven Is Not Far, Marian Baay has written an emotive, soul-stirring story of a love that transcends time, distance, and even war...as the reader is swept away from the newly thriving logging country of Michigan, to the atrocious battlefield of Gettysburg.

Filled with hope, the handsome, young Albert Van Ampting has traveled many a mile to begin life anew. Much to his parents' dismay, Albert has left the Netherlands accompanied by his Irish Setter, Jessie, to become a prosperous logger in Michigan and perhaps find a wife in the bargain. During his journey he receives the sad news that war has broken out between the northern and southern states.

While wintering in Detroit, Albert meets the dark haired, green-eyed Michelle Lefevre—a woman who both intrigues and fascinates him with her beauty, charm, and the amusing fact that she always wears something unusual in her hair. As their initial attraction turns into an all-consuming love, Albert must leave his new bride as he feels called by God to fight in the Civil War...much to Michelle's distress. His time with Michelle had seemed like Heaven on earth—in the horrendous battle of Gettysburg does he still find Heaven is not far after all? As she receives horrifying news, the grieving Michelle frantically searches for him on the battlefield. Will she find him amongst the vast number of casualties of this dreadful war?

As I read this debut story I was duly impressed by the storyline and my emotions ran the gamut … from smiles to tears and amusement to great sadness. Once again I was reminded of the atrocities of this terrible war that took so many hopeful young men's lives and I was deeply saddened. This story is far from being dark, however, with such delightful characters as the mischievous, fun-loving Albert, the amusing Michelle, and the jovial antics of Jessie, the beloved Irish Setter. Oh, and I mustn't forget the toe curling romance! :) With a deep spiritual thread of redemption and faith throughout...don't miss out on this heartrending and endearing story by debut author, Marian Baay! Very nicely done!

Kitt is the almost eleven years old daughter of Jack Burns – a Canadian widower who is enlisting in the Union army to fight in the American Civil War. Kitt doesn’t really understand why her father is going to fight, but she trusts that God will bring her father home again after the war.

Jack frequently receives mail from his sweet child, Kitt. She sends him letters and beautiful poems, and adds some little things from home in the envelopes, like seagull feathers, or dried flowers. The letters are being read by all the men and boost the morale of the whole regiment. Soon Kitt is dubbed their mascot and known as ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ – as Jack often calls her.

Kitt understands that not everyone can survive the war, but she pleads with God to save her pappy and the men in his regiment. This young girl has a lot of faith that runs deep. Will her pappy return home to her after the war?

I really enjoyed this beautiful tale, and the poems throughout the story were a lovely treat. The characters were easy to love and difficult to say good-bye to.

Nicely done, Micaela and Murray! Dad must be so proud of his talented daughter!

This is the story of Renée Chastain Harris, a woman who lived at Rose Hill Plantation, Virginia during the Civil War. The year 1863 was going to be a difficult year for Renée with her husband and son away fighting in the war.

People who know me will attest to the fact that I’m not easily impressed. But Joette Baldwin did it!—she impressed me with her rich descriptions that spoke to my imagination. After I finished this story I felt like I had been back in time and met the people at Rose Hill. I had cheered for Renée in her glorious years and wept with her in her moments of sorrow.

I think Joette gave us a good look at how life for ordinary people could have been during the Civil War. Well done, Joette!
