Diana's Fond Farewell! A "Retirement" Party!

Diana L. Flowers
I can't believe it has been SIX YEARS since my first invitation of Diana L. Flowers to do a guest review on the blog. I'd been blogging by myself for a number of years already -- over on ShoutLife (no longer around) and on My Book Therapy blog. But I didn't really get blogging until I started what was Overcoming Through Time blog, which later got renamed Overcoming Through Time With God's Help, and finally Overcoming With God blog! Whew!  A lot of names for a blog that I'd initially started to share how God helps us overcome (I was still working as a psychologist at that time) and how that reflected in fiction. But it got lonely!!! I didn't like blogging by myself.  And there was a fabulous reviewer out there who was such a nice person -- Diana Flowers. So I asked this amazing Christian fiction reviewer if she'd guest post.  And she did! Finally I got to meet her in person in the spring of 2011.

Praise God, Diana has had almost 180 reviews since coming on OWG blog in 2011. Thirty book reviews a year on average! That despite having gone through major surgery and having struggled with ongoing health difficulties.
The above picture was taken in Diana's lovely home in South Carolina last spring, 2016.  We here at OWG blog will MISS "Malibu Barbie" (that's who I thought she looked like when I met her in person!) and our "Senior Reviewer" and AKA "Angel Girl" but she's certainly earned her retirement!

Favorites:
Some of her favorite authors, whose books she has faithfully reviewed have been: Laura Frantz, Julie Lessman, MaryLu Tyndall, Coleen Coble, and Maggie Brendan and so many more!!!

Here's a message from Bonnie Roof: Diana, I'll miss seeing/reading your beautiful reviews on OWG blog, but am comforted by the fact that I'll still see/read a few, now and then, on Amazon and other sites. I'm even more joyful that I'll continue to see your posts on Facebook, etc. I can't thank you enough for patiently helping/guiding this senior, but newest, member of the OWG team in "learning the ropes." I'm blessed by your friendship, love your sense of humor, and am inspired by your godliness. I can't wait to see what future plans and blessings God has in store for you, and am praying and believing for your total healing. Love, hugs, and prayers!

Here's a message from Teresa S. Mathews:
Diana to say that words fail me today is almost laughable because we both know how I can talk, but it's so difficult to express the sadness my heart is feeling.
I can still remember your excitement that night at church when you told me you had become a part of OWG. I was so happy for you and a tad jealous! lol Then the Lord surprised me with the opportunity to join you and Carrie and what a glorious time it has been. You, my precious friend, will be missed immensely but thank the Lord I am blessed to live close enough to you that I can visit from time to time. May GOD bless your future endeavors as only He can do! Love you so much angel girl!

Diana's Review Of 'A Moonbow Night' By Laura Frantz

A Moonbow Night

A Moonbow Night By Laura Frantz
Revell Publishing, January 3, 2017

~5 stars!~

Synopsis:~ Her wilderness survival skills are without rival. But her greatest talent is keeping other people's secrets.

After fleeing Virginia, Temperance Tucker and her family established an inn along the Shawnee River. It's a welcome way station for settlers and frontiersman traveling the wild Cumberland region of Kentucke - men like Sion Morgan, a Virginia surveyor who arrives at the inn with his crew looking for an experienced guide.

Though he balks when Tempe is appointed to lead his team through the wilderness, it isn't long before Sion must admit that her abilities may outmatch his own. But can the tenuous tie they are forming survive the dangers waiting just around the bend?

With her signature sweeping style and ability to bring the distant past to vivid life, Laura Frantz beckons you to join her in a land of Indian ambushes, conflicting loyalties, and a tentative love that meanders like a cool mountain stream.

My Thoughts: Author Laura Frantz is a masterful artist who paints stunning pictures with words, and A Moonbow Night is a portrait that left me awestruck. This novel is an evocative, heartbreaking, and hauntingly beautiful tale with courageous, strong characters, and deliciously descriptive prose. The author's historical research is impeccable and well-detailed and her writing style is indescribably spectacularquite possibly the best I have ever read by Ms. Frantz! The reader is immediately drawn in to the dangers and beauty of the early Kentucke wildernessfrom the constant terrifying fear of savage Indian attacks to the dazzling allure of the moonbow o'er misty waterfalls.

Although I would love to have had more romantic tension between Sion and Tempe earlier on, I realize that they were both haunted by loss and heartbreak...and to rush things would have been unseemly and unrealistic. The waiting and anticipation was well worth it, however, and the romance was utterly breathtaking...and yes, might I add toe-curling!?πŸ˜›As I read the last chapter with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, I knew that I had been someplace specialinto the heart and mind of Laura Frantz and her beloved Kentucky. And what a beautifully captivating journey it was.

**Note to OWG viewers** This review is actually my tribute to Laura Frantz, whose first book The Frontiersman's Daughter, paved the way for me to begin writing reviews on OWG...which literally changed my life. Our mutual love of this fabulous book first drew Carrie Fancett Pagels, Marian Baay (one of our earlier reviewers), and I together as FB friends and we maintain a staunch friendship to this day. This in turn led Carrie to ask me to join OWG blog. I have read every book Laura Frantz has ever written and I urge you to as well. As I will soon be leaving OWG, I wanted to take this opportunity to tell Laura "thank you" for all the hours of reading pleasure (looking forward to many more!), and for helping me get through the death of my mother with Courting Morrow Little and her loving support. A Godly, humble lady, and a precious friend to allmay God bless you, dearest Laura!

When she is literally ready to kick him out of her class, Colin makes her a proposal that involves traveling all the way to his postcard perfect hometown in Iowa. A Compelling Must Read!

Seattle, Washington Territory - 1871

In Such a Hope, author Sondra Kraak has spun a powerfully emotive tale of a young woman's quest to find a sense of belongingset against the backdrop of the tree blanketed landscape and grandeur of the Cascade Mountains.

Spending her entire life growing up on the seat of a wagon and assisting her father's successful freighting business, Anna finally returns home to their cabin in Seattle. Her father's death has devastated her, and she longs to find camaraderie in her community and a chance to fulfill the calling God has placed on her life...the desire to pray for the sick. Two stalwart, handsome men enter Anna's lifeone the passionate, zealous Michael, who encourages Anna to use her miraculous gift in his revival meetings—the other, Tristan, an enigmatic and intimidating farmer her father had befriended. But praying for healing comes with a high price and ugly rumors begin to surface about Anna's spiritual gift and her property. Both men must learn to surrender their plans for the future in different ways—a sacrifice neither is sure he is willing to make.

I accidentally "stumbled" upon Sondra Kraak online and she was one of the best discoveries I have ever made. I was entranced by the cover of her new book, Such a Hope, and the blurb intrigued me as well! Tackling the subject of laying on of hands and miraculous healing took alot of courage and Ms. Kraak did so with finesse and wisdom...addressing the question as to why some people get healed and others do not. The multifaceted main characters were admittedly admirable, but not infallible. And ooh, the romantic tension almost stole my breath away! 😯Sondra Kraak is an amazingly talented author, and I anxiously await the next book in the Paths of Grace series! Be sure to order your copy of this emotionally stirring story of passion, forgiveness, and redemption today!

From Guccis To Amish?

Jen Turano pens a rollicking, but suspenseful tale of a pop star's journey from the glitz and glamour of California, Gucci handbags, Dolce & Gabbana jeans, and bodyguards—to the quaint, but secretive Amish town of Millersburg, with its pretty flower boxes in the windows, gleaming white farmhouses with wraparound porches, red barns, and ducks?...yes, ducks! 😏

International pop star, Margo Hartman, has had it. She needs a break from grueling tours, paparazzi, her controlling mother, and literally runs away. A nasty encounter with a duck (yes, you read correctly) necessitates a trip to the vet in the Amish town of Millersburg, where she meets Dr. Ian St. James and his brother-in-lawthe hunky Sheriff's deputy, Brock Moore. Brock is working undercover on a case for Ian and realizes that Margo is not who she appears to be either...as she continues to try to hide her superstar identity. She bears an uncanny resemblance to a local Amish woman and her crazy periods of deja vu raises all kinds of questions, as sights and scents make her feel as though she has been to this small town before. But why does this make her a target for a killer? As Margo and Brock begin to draw closer, he is determined to find answers—for both their sakes.

I have heard that Jen Turano is known for her quirky characters and unusual storylines and now I have the facts. It's all true! πŸ˜› What a delightfully unique tale with Gabby, the waddling duck, a feisty heroine who frequently shares witty quips with the hero, and a wacky mother who would drive me bonkers...interweaved with a heartrending Amish theme. However, the story lacked the romantic tension that I so love, and the only real attraction I saw towards Brock from Margo was a little bit of heart-racing, comforting hand holding, and the way his muscles rippled when he moved. I liked them, too, but...πŸ˜‰ Nevertheless, the conclusion was satisfactorily passionate and I especially loved that mysterious last sentence leading me to excitedly believe there's a sequel cominghopefully Ian St. James's story! A delightful, amusing, mysterious, tender, heartbreaking must read!

I received a copy of this book from Net Galley in the hopes that I might write a review, but was not required to do so. I received no monetary compensation for this review.

This book may be purchased from Amazon, CBD, BAM, B&N, and your local Christian bookstore.

Simply Enchanting!

Rachel Hauck has crafted a magical Yuletide tale set in Brighton, England, an emerald isle steeped in traditionwhere the crisp scent of pine and cinnamon waft through the frosty airand snow-covered, beautifully lit fir trees, costumed carolers, and the sound of sleigh bells can be heard ringing throughout the town!

Avery Truitt, college volleyball star in St. Simons Island, Georgia, was rejected by the man of her dreams five long years ago, Prince Colin of Brighton Kingdom. After declaring their love for one another, Colin fails to show up for her prom and after texting her once, never speaks to her again. But the joy of her sister's pregnancy brings Avery to Brighton to visit her at the royal palace, just in time for the Cathedral City's enchanting Christmas season. Wishing to attend the many holiday festivities, dances, and charities, she knows she cannot possibly avoid seeing Colin again, but hopes for some kind of closure to finally relieve the pain of the past five years.

A centuries old tradition in Brighton dictates that a young man smitten with love runs all the way up the one hundred and eighty-two steps to the Pembroke Bell Tower and rings the bell just after midnight of the Harvest Celebration to declare his undying devotion. Then he must woo the object of his affections and marry her by Christmas. Is it too late for Colin to fix things with Averyand will he follow his heart to ring the Pembroke Chapel Bell for her or his lady friend, Jordan Skye? Or will he ring the bell at all?...since the last young man to do so plummeted to his death.

Rachel Hauck is a New York Times bestselling award winning author with many an amazing novel to her credit and this one is no exception! It seems as though all of us ladies still have that little girl in us who comes to the surface from time to timedreaming of  our Prince Charming and happily-ever-after. That young girl in me absolutely delighted in this enchanting Christmas novel of love lost, and of the handsome prince who must atone for his inconsiderate deeds to win back the lady he adores. But, ooh, the angsty romance quickly brought the woman in me (and the tissue box!) back out, and a twist near the end made my heart skip one too many beats! Ms. Hauck's descriptive prose intensified my senses with the scent of evergreen boughs, the sights of Christmas lights glistening underneath a layer of snow, and the sounds of Bing Crosby crooning White Christmas. A Royal Christmas Wedding is simply begging to be made into a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie and if so I'll grab a front row seat! Very beautifully written, Rachel Hauck!
