Overcoming Depression - Interview with Debut Author Rebecca Nightsong

Debut Author Rebecca Nightsong

Rebecca, welcome to Overcoming With God.  We appreciate your willingness to share your testimony of overcoming with our readers. Congratulations on your debut!!!

Rebecca is a member of Tidewater Area Christian Writers and I've had the privilege of meeting with her in person and I've gotten to hear about her debut book! We're glad to introduce Rebecca to our OWG readers!

Would you tell us about the one of the most difficult things in your life you have had to overcome, with God’s help?
Depression has been one of the most difficult things I’ve had to overcome.  I have struggled with infertility issues for a decade.  I describe infertility as an on-going loss. It’s very difficult to resolve loss that keeps happening. And that unresolved grief can quickly mushroom into depression.

What passages in the Bible have been most helpful to you in those times?

Colossians 3:2 “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
Psalm 42:8 “By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me-- a prayer to the God of my life.”
Is 65:24 “It shall also come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear.”

What helped you get through or helped you cope with this difficulty?
When I pray and read God’s Word every day, He gives me new promises and a new purpose that is fresh for that day.
One of my favorite things to do is write in my prayer journal the worries and sadness I feel in that moment.  Then I ask God:  “What is your heart in this right now?” I write down the verses He brings to mind, and then I ask Him:  “What do you mean by that?”
He is always faithful to speak words of specific direction and comfort to my heart.  That is consistently the fastest way to peace for me, and it lasts all day.
One of my favorite sermons is by Charles H. Spurgeon, titled “Small Things Not To Be Despised.” He points out that God’s works start small, and we should never ignore them.
I’ve discovered that for me, depression is most potent when I am not nurturing the small quiet ways God works in my heart. Focusing on even the very small ways that I can see God moving and working in my life has given me so much hope—it keeps me connected to Him.
Daily time with Jesus reveals the ways He is working in my life—both small and large.  His voice in scripture always re-sets my hope in Him.  This is why I chose ‘Nightsong’ as my pen-name; because even in the darkest night, Jesus has always given me a song.

Disability friendliness: Is this latest release available in audio format or do you have any other works available on audio?  Do your e-books have audio capability? Do you have any in large print?
Not currently, but I plan to have every book available in audio format very soon.

In this latest work, do you have any topics useful for bibliotherapy, or therapeutic influence through reading about a disorder or situation?
In “Love on the Range,” Marlee has a tight grip on her pride. It blinds her to some of the blessings God wants to bring into her life, because she can only see that her own plans are failing. When our plans or our bodies fail us, we come face to face with pride and our own limitations. But those things can be a doorway to God’s work in our hearts and lives, if we will let Him. It would be therapeutic write about your own limits as a place to meet with God. When we come to the end of our own strength, that is when we get to see Him in action.

Question you’d like to ask readers:
What are the many “small things” you see God working in your life?  Have you been blind to any of them because of your own plans or limitations?

Bio: RebeccaNightsong grew up under the wide-open skies of Idaho, where she spent long days in fluffy petticoats and lace, chasing geese and riding goats (since sadly, she had no horses).
As a bossy sister in a large family of all boys, she may or may not be guilty of making her 3 year old brother lie down on a hard strip of lumber in the middle of the pasture to take a pretend nap when playing “pioneer families.”
Today, Rebecca lives with her husband, who is a constant source of inspiration.
She spends her time in her quirky fictional world of Looking Glass Lake, bossing around characters who frequently boss back.

Celebrating Debbie Lynne Costello's Debut Novel!

Welcome to our party to celebrate Debbie Lynne Costello's release of her wonderful new novel! As you can see, our knight has just ridden in, looking for his fair lady! Will he find her?

I think he has spied her! What is she wearing? Go to our Facebook party page to post a picture of your own attire for this event!

Make sure to leave a comment on this blog post, though, to enter for our drawings.

Medieval times were not for the faint of heart, and our heroine goes through many trials in the course of her story!
Medieval Apple Tart we are serving this on the OvercomingwithGod.com blog for @Debbie Lynne Costello's party!

We're serving an apple tart all day long (see Tartys in Applis on Medieval Cookery website). To accompany it, I'm serving mulled apple cider.  Also have an egg custard to go with it and crusty bread covered in honey butter.

Serve yourself or wait on the table wenches to bring you around your food. Remember there is no silverware (this is Medieval times, remember?) but we'll bring around some towels for you to clean up with. Meanwhile, have some hot mulled cider!

Isn't Lord Royce handsome? And Lady Brithwin is so lovely! Great cover!

Would you like to write an old-fashioned love letter?
We have just the thing for you--vellum sheets and a quill pen.
While parchment was made from cow hides (ew!) in medieval times, I thought we'd stick with the new-fangled stuff! And who
wouldn't want a hot pink quill pen? Seriously?

I feel pretty sure Lady Brithwin would have enjoyed this.
Since only the privileged, and usually not women, could read
or write in medieval times, I suspect Lady Brithwin would have
had to have snuck around to learn how to do so. She's a lady of
many talents and certainly not bound by convention--one of her
traits I really enjoyed!
Slow Cooker Hot Spiced Apple Cider - With just four ingredients (okay, five if you decide to spike it with your favorite rum) this Crock Pot mulled cider recipe couldn't be any easier to make.

Coming up for our evening menu - the cooks are busy in the back!!!
Doesn't the food smell amazing?  Not so sure if I'll have any of the, er, pork, though--don't want to make a pig of myself!
A knight and his squire preparing for joust

Ah, I see the jousting tournament is about to get underway!

Gauging by the crowds' reaction there seem to be some favorites already

Giveaway: A pair of silver equestrian earrings (Debbie Lynne owns a number of horses and of course horses feature prominently in the novel!) Another reader will win our parchment and quill set. Debbie Lynne is also giving away a copy of her new release! Meanwhile, make yourself a Medieval party hat (click here.)

Some of the best gifts this season will be delivered via mail. Packages, boxes, gift certificates, and cards send our love, especially at Christmastime. And such is the case in Debbie Lynne Costello’s short story “The Letter” debuting in Guidepost’s A Cup of Christmas Cheer 2014

This touching story depicts a family torn by pride and separated by war who receives a life changing message of God’s healing and redemption, wrapped in an unassuming white envelope and sent via the United States Postal Service.

Despite a little postal intervention, holiday goodwill doesn't kindle easily, at least to a young war widow trying to raise her children without the help and support of her pampered mother-in-law. Only a Christmas miracle will melt the ice around the proud matron’s heart to embrace the best gift of all—family. But will nerves frazzle before the frost thaws between them?

Set at the end of World War II, after most surviving soldiers have returned home and families are rebuilding lives with or without loved ones, this story captures the high emotion of our country celebrating its first peacetime Christmas since before Pearl Harbor.

Like all of Debbie Lynne Costello’s stories, it features a strong southern heroine whose courage is a pillar to her family, a touching tribute to the women who served at war-work while their men braved the battlefield. But will this struggling widow’s faithfulness prove enough to turn hard hearts and reconcile the past?

Patriotism, forgiveness, and personal character abound in this beautiful story that will surely enrich every reader’s appreciation of family, home and country. Read this heartwarming story where God’s grace is the overarching theme, making miracles--both big and small--possible at Christmastime.

Teresa S. Mathews Reviews Heaven Is Not Far by Marian Baay

Published by Stardust Romance

Reviewed by Teresa S. Mathews

In this hauntingly beautiful love story we are introduced to Albert Van Ampting a young immigrant from the Netherlands.  Albert left his homeland to come to America in hopes of starting a new prosperous life and perhaps find a bride. Traveling with other Dutch immigrants that were headed to a Dutch Colony in Michigan, even though they are used to a harsh weather they decide to stay the winter in Detroit and move on to the Colony in the spring. That was to be a life changing decision for Albert.

As Albert and his loving companion, a red Irish Setter named Jessie are out exploring Detroit, Albert notices the most breathtakingly beautiful girl he has ever seen. She had thick brown hair worn in a braid and adorned with a wreath of branches with orange berries. Albert finds that very intriguing and yet it somehow seems to fit her. When Albert gets up the nerve to speak to this angel in human form, he finds out her name is Michelle LeFevre. She helps her mother and sister run the family fabric shop since her father’s death.

It doesn’t take long for Albert and Michelle to fall in love and get married. When a few short months have past Albert feels God is calling him to serve in the war that is going on between the states, he tries to resist it but while reading his Bible, the scriptures start to speak to his heart and he knows he has to obey God. He can’t help but wonder how Michelle will take the news. Will he be able to trust that God will bring him back to her?

Marian Baay has written such a charming story that touches your very soul, it is hard to believe that this is her debut novel. Bravo! Marian this was certainly a job well done!!  I am hoping to see more from you in the near future.
