As she helps them dress and fetches tea for the Burwell women, including her half-sister by blood, Lettie becomes more determined that she’ll not live out her days in servitude. But she's afraid of what could happen. When her mother dies from a beating that Burwell sanctioned, Lettie seeks any means of escape.<br /><br />Nathan Pleasant, a bookkeeper and son of a well-respected Richmond funeral home owner, is smitten with the Burwells' slave. He meets secretly with Letitia. Nathan begins transporting slaves from Virginia and onto the Underground railroad. His dear friend, a ship captain, has also lost his heart to an enslaved woman. When the women's lives are at stake, the two men risk all by transporting them North. Can they get them to freedom? Who is pursuing them? Once they can shake their shackles of slavery, would the two women even welcome romance with their Underground Railroad conductors? Or will the two men find themselves alone and far from the James River, where they grew up and where their families still live?<br /><br /></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWeKoDwnk-CzRdgxP-Wwza6_aTuPH3D3QM_jDK17q2EWx2bZWyC7FYaFn48-WIAtjJajrF2hjScZs6o7vJRtSBedDxMS5Q-pZ0vG-BTA5K_x1Us14R23DsGQzvhnv8LxGzCIxthi21UH1DBT8eA03SAYdO_SyTSCRXSjSALCp5yo3WIA4eedtVue0S/s132/daffodil%203.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="132" data-original-width="132" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWeKoDwnk-CzRdgxP-Wwza6_aTuPH3D3QM_jDK17q2EWx2bZWyC7FYaFn48-WIAtjJajrF2hjScZs6o7vJRtSBedDxMS5Q-pZ0vG-BTA5K_x1Us14R23DsGQzvhnv8LxGzCIxthi21UH1DBT8eA03SAYdO_SyTSCRXSjSALCp5yo3WIA4eedtVue0S/s1600/daffodil%203.png" width="132" /></a></div><br /><p><span style="font-size: x-large;"><i><a href="https://smile.amazon.com/Loves-Escape-James-River-Romances-ebook/product-reviews/B09RGN1Z3M/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_show_all_btm?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=all_reviews">Love's Escape</a></i> is FREE on Kindle Unlimited, if you have that subscription on Amazon! I tried listening to the first one, but there's an unsympathetic character (at least unsympathetic to the heroine of the story!) by the name of Carrie. Yup. My name. So I kept getting pulled out of the story every time the narrator said, "Carrie". May go back to that one later. Pegg Thomas's story is one I'm listening to right now. I really like the hero and heroine. It's set in Michigan post Civil War, which is about a generation before my family began logging in Michigan. The narrator does a great job in bringing out the personalities of the characters. Looking forward to finishing my listens on this new audiobook!<br /><br />If you love lumberjack fiction like I do (I have a bunch of lumberjack stories myself) you'll love this story and how awesome is that to have it on audiobook!!!<br /><br /><b>Giveaway:</b> A copy of this new release in your choice of format: ebook, paperback, or audiobook. </span>Carrie Fancett Pagelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09096954464239963966noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8713519582170578996.post-22179443159582479402022-01-11T10:43:00.001-05:002022-01-11T10:43:46.570-05:00Unexpected Blessings<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjt_AYK5qf7UlfHhqBtO8j1K07Vh9HigA_58BOJIpXZsm8JszRJukxIaxNlNlZ34GDd56wdaXAeo0h_d3-1BCikjPHylFZWxZSrPrZsFrkW_ty4ZBsjberjAeV4LEc5jr-nHw_itXm6d-6D3sTx5vKOWwC-aLhVPVoIxrIGxtknoWfpEsTx6Hgw9l4W=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjt_AYK5qf7UlfHhqBtO8j1K07Vh9HigA_58BOJIpXZsm8JszRJukxIaxNlNlZ34GDd56wdaXAeo0h_d3-1BCikjPHylFZWxZSrPrZsFrkW_ty4ZBsjberjAeV4LEc5jr-nHw_itXm6d-6D3sTx5vKOWwC-aLhVPVoIxrIGxtknoWfpEsTx6Hgw9l4W=w300-h400" width="300" /></span></a></div><span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /> </span><span style="font-size: xx-large;">Did you get any unexpected blessings this Christmas? McKee</div></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />It’s hard to believe that the holidays are already upon us. It’s my favorite time of the year, and it may be yours as well, but if you are someone who, like me, lives with chronic pain and illness, this time of year presents a whole new set of challenges that others may not face.<br /><br />Holidays can be busy and stressful for anyone. Our to-do lists are jam-packed with activities such as shopping, planning menus, and hosting get-togethers. It’s a time for families and friends to celebrate. However, the holidays can also be a time for anxiety and increased pain to take over if we’re not careful.<br /><br />I’d like to share a few tips to help you this holiday season. And while they are extremely important for people living with chronic pain and illness, these reminders can be beneficial to those without chronic pain and illness, too!<br /><br />First and foremost, it’s important to remember that you can’t do it all by yourself. It’s okay to ask for help. <br /><br />Here are three keys to remember: pace, prioritize, and delegate. This is a list of some ways to help you do just that.<br /><br />· Create a schedule. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and planning a holiday celebration shouldn’t be either. And when you’re working on your schedule, be sure to build in a recovery day after the holiday, as well. Your body will need time to recuperate. <br /><br />· Set realistic goals. Determine what truly needs to be done, keeping in mind that “less is more.” Then choose those items that only you can do and prioritize them. Slowly work on the things that you need to do, and delegate the rest to trusted friends or family members. In doing so, you may find that there are some things that aren’t truly essential and can be removed from your to-do list all together.<br /><br />· Let go of the need for perfection. We all like things to go as smoothly as possible, but pushing ourselves to achieve an impossible quest isn’t helpful. In fact, it can increase your stress level and steal your joy, in general, not just during the holiday season.<br /><br />· When possible, prep as much as you can in advance. Some items, such as cookies, can be made early and frozen, making things a lot easier than trying to do it all at the last minute. <br /><br />· Order groceries and gifts online. This can save both time and money, as you’re less likely to grab those impulse buys.<br /><br />· Use gift bags. You can find cute bags to fit each person on your shopping list, and you can save pain by not spending hours trying to get the wrapping paper on “just so.”<br /><br />· Instead of hosting the event yourself, find a restaurant that is open for the holiday celebrations, and let them do the work for you.<br /><br />· Set boundaries. Let others know when you are starting to feel overwhelmed. Your health comes first.<br /><br />· Take rest breaks as needed. Trust me. Your body will thank you for it. Taking time to breathe will also allow you to enjoy the time with your loved ones vs. watching it fly by.<br /></span><a href="https://amzn.to/3Anl7SL" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" height="523" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgAjuOa5_ybg9GDp_KZM2dVfiO15BCPGsN8g0HKZ0n9AeOr-YST0HdggUsS66Opy8x1yn1BtBStm-E4QJRnFkEo2-suLbkpq1hu6dRIXf8yGmVf-cmMzVCiVY306KtpnzIUfIS1Z93vCu72DOimsBBRRGnDGPL-OYOnakW06x0aMU-8LGIFNZ0dzDek=w348-h523" width="348" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-size: x-large;">Book Blurb:<br /><br />Why me? Is God punishing me? Is my faith not strong enough for God to heal me? How can I achieve my dreams? What’s my purpose?<br /><br />If you’re someone living with a chronic illness or chronic pain, these are just a few of the questions you’ve likely asked on more than one occasion. You may feel overlooked or even resentful. You try to stay positive, but some days it’s hard. It’s natural to feel this way and grieve, but it’s still possible to have a hope-filled life. God has a purpose for the pain. <br /><br />Christians aren’t immune from pain and illness, but we don’t have to go through it alone. Jesus promised that He would “never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV).<br /><br />Millions of women suffering from chronic pain and illness want the reassurance they’re not alone. The devotions in HOPE Amid the Pain are written by a chronic pain warrior with over twenty-five years’ experience will point them to hope and encouragement. It’s possible to Hang On to Positive Expectations (HOPE) even amid the pain.</span><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; I’m 34 and live in small-town-nowhere-you’ve-ever-heard-of. I’m named after my great-aunt, Jade Edith Pepperdine. My mother likes to use this as her favorite ‘Momism’ and taunt me about being ‘Jaded.’ She can be sooo annoying.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">K: Ah, yes, your mother. I know I can be high maintenance, and I’d noticed that my life was crumbling.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">K: How so?<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">J: A lot of it had to do with Mom—we just couldn’t seem to get along. Plus, I was having trouble at work with being temperamental and cranky. Contentious with co-workers. All kinds of stuff.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">K: No, not you?<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">J: Very funny. I was dealing with a lot of fear, too, which brought out my inner-control freak in an attempt to avoid it, and then I’d get mad when it didn’t work. Anger became my default because my temper seemed to sit on the edge of explosion at all times. It was a big, vicious cycle I couldn’t seem to break out of, even though I knew things needed to change. I just didn’t know what to do.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">K: Makes perfect sense. Facing ourselves is never easy. So, Mayor offered to help with all this?<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">J: He did—if I agreed to his quest thingy before I went home.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">K: Whoa, that sounds like blackmail.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">J: No, I had a choice, but he helped me see that it really was in my best interest. He’s really caring and stuff. Super kind.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">K: You’re glad you went on the journey?<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">J: Very much so. Mayor helped me see… me. What was going on inside and how stuff that happened when I was little was affecting me today.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">K: Wow. Especially since I wasn’t the most cooperative. It was a long and twisty road, but I wouldn’t change any of it.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">K: I see. Not perfect, but much improved. I don’t feel so alone, have more hope, and less fear. And Mom and I are coming along nicely. *smile* But people really need to read the whole story for themselves. <i>Journey to ChiYah </i>is at <a href="applewebdata://0B92C0A9-02F8-4699-AFE8-1517A099EE50/mybook.to/PurchaseJourney"><span style="color: blue;">Amazon</span></a>, right?<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">K: It is indeed, and thank you for the PSA.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: x-large;">J: You’re welcome. When he collaborates on a foster care case with court-appointed special advocate Amanda Wright, a link between Amanda and a shelter resident sends the trio down a path of discovery none of them could have imagined.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"><br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqDA7f7-3TgP6DeUI3QJhp3WRlgOknBaohi9UQSk6gdPU1Z7p2w0nQROLoPI6iyWmPH2qTAREygFrbBKL2aT8AfUpsgZWrKGXGArSqX4St60qgPUPKPA3Hto38H2r8HLHRDf2Dk61kNY4/s461/behind-the-scenes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="461" data-original-width="289" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqDA7f7-3TgP6DeUI3QJhp3WRlgOknBaohi9UQSk6gdPU1Z7p2w0nQROLoPI6iyWmPH2qTAREygFrbBKL2aT8AfUpsgZWrKGXGArSqX4St60qgPUPKPA3Hto38H2r8HLHRDf2Dk61kNY4/w249-h396/behind-the-scenes.jpg" width="249" /></a></div><br /><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.84000015258789px; margin: 0in; text-indent: 0in;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: x-large;">When dreams disintegrate, is God really working behind the scenes for good?</span><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: x-large;"> </span><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: x-large;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 16.479999542236328px; margin: 0in 0in 13.4pt -0.25pt;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;"><br /><br />Mississippi Delta missionaries Camille and Raymond Richards are heartbroken over the impoverished people they encounter daily. Cecily had narrated my first audiobook, Mercy in a Red Cloak, and I knew she was an amazing narrator. </span></p><p><span style="color: #20124d; font-size: x-large;">Eloise is a cryptographer, which I loved because my daughter had considered becoming one and I'd never read a Christian Fiction with a female cryptographer. I enjoyed how FBI agent Phillip and Eloise originally weren't really interested in working together. That seemed realistic. I also enjoyed the organic unfolding of their relationship as they get to know one another while working on this unusual case. Please note: I did not hear any Author's Notes at the end of the listen. However, in the ebook and paperback, there is an explanation that this story truly was inspired by a real-life story, which is super cool! I have to say this is one of my favorite listens for the past two years possibly longer. The narration really matched the tone of the book, too.</span></p><p><span style="color: #20124d; font-size: x-large;">Johnnie Alexander has a captivating winner with this novel and I highly recommend it!</span></p><p><span style="color: #20124d; font-size: x-large;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #20124d; font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRd1p6A1QkDUZ1zpujLDjWHw5WoJYSi8AK7PsTvlnTBeV1W1WfVXh922c3L5D4tW_fU3ULa5HFoZMGwfYIeMddc6F1URmxTR29xannSAiBsOI4T8odBqo6oquaetAIHjcuxZE71ra3YTM/s499/cryptographer+pb.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="328" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRd1p6A1QkDUZ1zpujLDjWHw5WoJYSi8AK7PsTvlnTBeV1W1WfVXh922c3L5D4tW_fU3ULa5HFoZMGwfYIeMddc6F1URmxTR29xannSAiBsOI4T8odBqo6oquaetAIHjcuxZE71ra3YTM/s320/cryptographer+pb.jpg" width="210" /></a></span></div><p></p><p><span style="color: #20124d; font-size: x-large;"><i>The Cryptographer's Dilemma</i> is available also in ebook format and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Cryptographers-Dilemma-11-Johnnie-Alexander/dp/164352951X/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1629067460&sr=8-3">paperback</a> formats. </span></p><p><span style="color: #20124d; font-size: x-large;"><b>Giveaway:</b> I'm giving away a paperback copy of this novel. What he doesn’t expect to find is a beautiful and stubborn squatter has taken residence. Will her claim on the property prove harder to drive out than her claim on his heart?<br />Willa looked after Old Mr. Thompson through the war until his death. The late owner promised her a permanent home there, like the daughter he never had, but with some strings attached. When young and ambitious Benjamin Sharpe shows up with intent to evict her, Willa gives him a piece of her mind with a piece of lead aimed at his boots.<br />The youngest of the Sharpe brothers, Benjamin has been bossed around his entire life by his brothers, and he isn’t about to take it from any girl. All three of his brothers have veterans’ boasting rights in the War, and he must prove his mettle, too. But will his ambitions go so far as to force a waif from her home? As the girl’s resourceful defense of the property frustrates his plans, admiration plucks at his heartstrings. Ben must find a compromise while saving face with his family. <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 107%;"><b>I have been following author Carrie Fancett Pagels since
she first started writing and her books have always been more to me than just an
enjoyable read. During this journey I have come to realize Ms. Pagels’ love for the Straits of Mackinac, and Mackinac Island, flows from deep in her heart, right onto the pages of
her books. <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 107%;"><b>Dawn Charbonneau has until September to decide when
she is retiring from her travel agency, if it wasn’t for this nagging medical
problem, she might hold out a little longer. When her hubby Jim, of almost 50 years suggests
that she go a little early to their summer Cottage at the Straits of Mackinac, near Mackinac Island, Dawn
once again invites their daughter Tamara and granddaughter Jaycie to come and to her delight they accept. <o:p></o:p></b></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><b style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 16pt;">Tamara Worth was so ecstatic to have won Teacher of

she dealing with an unknown medical problem, now she has another life crisis.
When her mom suggests she meet her at their beautiful family cottage for a time
of relaxation and perhaps healing, Tamara agrees.</b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 107%;"><b>Jaycie Worth, soon to be archaeologist is worried that
she hasn’t yet gotten her summer internship, or any assistance for fall classes so she can continue her studies at Oxford. She was also hoping to hear those four little

different turn, and she finds herself on a plane headed to meet her Mom and
Grandmother at Butterfly Cottage, a place that has always been special to her since childhood. <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 107%;"><b>Butterfly Cottage had my emotions all over the place.
I’ve loved all of Carrie’s books but this one spoke to my heart so many times
that I continued to reach for my tissues. The characters and storyline enticed
me to continue reading just to see if the storms of life each one encountered
could turn out to be as beautiful as the flowers and butterflies on Mackinac Island
on an enchanting summer day. <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>

Rather than the plucky heroine, Susanna Moore, of <i>Bent Tree Bride</i>, Denise Weimer’s newest Southeastern frontier romance, I’ll be chatting with someone who witnessed most of her adventures in Creek Territory during the Red Stick War … her twelve-year-old brother, George Moore. Welcome, George. What brings you here today?<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"><u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">George</span></u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">: Well, the lady who wrote down our story told me your readers might want to hear about it. Susanna is always distracted with Sam these days. I’m sure readers wouldn’t be interested in how they fell in love, because who wants to know about that, but there is a lot of adventure in <i>Bent Tree Bride</i>. I’m the best person to interview. Sam’s too modest. He’d rather talk with you about all the books he’s read than how brave he was in battle. And how he saved Susanna’s life. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;">Well, George, I have a feeling you may be wrong about our readers wanting the details of Sam and Susanna’s romance, but for now, tell us how the novel starts. When did you first meet Sam Hicks? And do I understand correctly that he is the son of a Cherokee chief?<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"><u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">George</span></u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">: He is both Cherokee and white, but we didn’t know that at first. When he showed up at our house in the fall of 1813, all we knew was that he was a clerk for Indian Agent Colonel Meigs. He dressed and looked and spoke like a white man, all proper. He brought the commission that made my father a colonel of a new Cherokee Regiment that was being formed to join General Andrew Jackson’s Tennessee militia to go fight the Red Stick Creeks, the Creek Indians allied to the British. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;">You see, Father was chosen partly because my mother, Polly, is a Cherokee. Susanna’s mother was a white woman, but Sam didn’t know that either. He kept making eyes at Susanna at dinner, especially when Father gave his permission for Dr. Hawkins to court her and she almost choked on her food. I was just trying to get Father to let me sign up.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;">I take it Susanna did not care for Dr. Hawkins?<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"><u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">George</span></u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">: Dash it, no. He was a lot older and had a bunch of children from his first marriage. I helped us figure out a way to follow Father to Creek Territory after he got sick that fall. Mother is a great healer, and she agreed we might accompany her. But who should insist on escorting us but Dr. Hawkins? He said he wanted to volunteer his services, but I know he really wanted to be with Susanna. We went to Turkey Town, where my mother’s family lived, then to Fort Strother to find the army. We also found Sam Hicks. And boy, was Susanna in for a surprise.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;">Why was that?<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"><u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">George</span></u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">: Because Sam had signed up as a lieutenant in a Cherokee spy and scout company. He knew four languages and had been trained to fight by chiefs even though he’d never been in battle. He’d spent more time in his father’s library. His father had been a clerk for the army before him. Susanna got into a bit of a scrap with a militiaman, and Father assigned Sam to be our bodyguard. Susanna convinced him to teach us how to defend ourselves. We both wanted to show Father we could survive on the frontier so he wouldn’t send us home. Mostly, Susanna didn’t want to be forced to marry Dr. Hawkins. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;">How did that work for her?<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"><u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">George</span></u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">: Not so well. Sam didn’t want to teach her for some reason … I think after he realized her mother had been white, so Father wouldn’t let him court her. Father was scared of the Cherokees losing their land even though they were fighting with the Americans, so he wanted our plantation to go to Susanna and a white husband. But I could tell Sam and my sister really liked each other. He kept getting close to her, like on the range when he showed us tomahawk and knife throwing. Her face turned all red. I got between them like any good brother would. And once, I caught him holding her hand—even though he claimed it was only because she needed salve from doing too much hospital laundry. Then when she got sick, he had me take her some kind of poem. Yuck! Once she got better, she rode with him on the way back to Turkey Town. They were betwattled for sure, after that.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;">Did your story end once you left the fort for Turkey Town?<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"><u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">George</span></u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">: Not hardly. Someone was trying to kill our principal chief, and Sam and his men had to help guard him. Sam and the doctor were at odds all the time too. I wished they’d just fight it out. I know who woulda won. But eventually, Sam had to go off to fight a real battle. Then, Susanna got abducted when she walked right in on the man trying to kill our chief. And Sam had to leave the army to rescue her from deep in Red Stick Territory. But that’s where the lady who wrote our story down said I should stop talking, so’s folks want to read the book.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;">All right, then. Much of family is from Eastern Kentucky, and I grew up hearing stories of what it was like to live there. We've visited once and I would like to return.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: x-large;">Thoughts so far: Cora is quite eccentric and she really does put poor Lucy into some dangerous situations. Mountain people as not always quite welcoming to strangers, especially if they are moonshiners. I have a couple of family members who were. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: x-large;">I've really enjoyed reading about logging in that area during that time because my great-grandfather would go up to Northern Michigan to log up there. So I thought Kentucky had been pretty well logged out by then in that area. My grandfather ended up being born in Traverse City, Michigan, even though he was from Kentucky (which explained why we couldn't find a birth record for him in Kentucky!) That was in 1906, before the start of this novel.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: x-large;">Lucy is a really sympathetic heroine. I'm dying to find out what happened to her little sister. Also interested in hearing more about the illiteracy. My mother and her siblings attended school in Kentucky and my grandfather was able to read and write. This story makes me wonder about the previous generations. What a blessing that educators did reach out to help adults attain literacy!</span></p><p><span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></p><h2 class="bc-heading

When Cora sends Lucy into the hills to act as scribe for the mountain people, she is repelled by the primitive conditions and intellectual poverty she encounters. Few adults can read and write. </p><p style="box-sizing: inherit;">Born in those hills, Cora knows the plague of illiteracy. So does Brother Wyatt, a singing schoolmaster who travels through the hills. Involving Lucy and Wyatt, Cora hatches a plan to open the schoolhouses to adults on moonlit nights. The best way to combat poverty, she believes, is to eliminate illiteracy. But will the people come? </p><p style="box-sizing: inherit;">As Lucy emerges from a life in the shadows, she finds purpose; or maybe purpose finds her. With purpose comes answers to her questions, and something else she hadn't expected: love. </p><p style="box-sizing: inherit;">Inspired by the true events of the Moonlight Schools, this stand-alone novel from best-selling author Suzanne Woods Fisher brings to life the story that shocked the nation into taking adult literacy seriously. You'll finish the last moment of this enthralling story with deep gratitude for the gift of reading.</p><p style="box-sizing: inherit;"><br /></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit;"><b>Giveaway:</b> Leave a comment for a chance to win a copy. <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Moonlight-School-Suzanne-Woods-Fisher-ebook/dp/B08CJB8X2P/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3L0SU031JS6VU&dchild=1&keywords=the+moonlight+school+by+suzanne+woods+fisher&qid=1615166089&s=digital-text&sprefix=the+moonlight+school%2Cdigital-text%2C155&sr=1-1">The Moonlight School</a></i> comes in paperback and also ebook versions, too.</p><p style="box-sizing: inherit;"><br /></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit;"><br /></p></span></span></div><p><br /></p>Carrie Fancett Pagelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09096954464239963966noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8713519582170578996.post-31646004579075308482021-02-21T19:28:00.001-05:002021-02-21T19:28:35.970-05:00Giveaway: Toni Shiloh's New Release - An Unlikely Proposal<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08D6QZFKS/ "><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJqL3NhljRvN9GfIJG6YcL1URuuwkTmAUTE4yQgz-zsPIvu5Lp1Od6yBt2NenPlLvAxpcuzWLsSpUTyMYSVGMxvGkunCcr4ltYMKOjyGJgLE5mykgzoJXMgNVB7mH2j5DluC3lW5TU91g/w323-h512/AnUnlikelyProposal.jpg" /></span></a></div><span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />An Unlikely Proposal by Toni Shiloh<br /><br />I am delighted to announce Toni Shiloh's new release with Love Inspired! As curator of the</span> <span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">Sedgwick County Museum of History, Sloane has dedicated her life to making sure others can connect with their history. When a donor drops off a dusty old satchel, she doesn’t expect much from the common artifact; after all, the museum has a few on display and more in storage. However, she finds real treasure inside: a nineteenth-century diary. Now, she’s on the hunt to see if there’s more where it came from. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><b><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Garrett Anderson just wanted to clean out his grandmother’s historic but tumbledown farmhouse before selling it to fund her medical care. He’s always been the responsible one, and with her advancing Alzheimer’s, he can’t afford to be sentimental about the family home. But his carefully ordered plan runs up against two formidable obstacles after he takes a few things to the local museum: Sloane, who’s fallen in love with both the diaries and the old house, and his own heart, which is drawn to Sloane. Selling the house that holds so much history will disappoint both Sloane and his sister, Lauren, who is doing her best to care for their grandmother, but Garrett finds himself in an impossible situation.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">A century and a half earlier, motherless Annabelle Collins embarks with her aunt and uncle on the adventure of a lifetime: settling the prairies of Sedgwick County, Kansas. The diaries she left behind paint a portrait of life, loss, and love—and a God who faithfully carried her through it all. Paging through the diaries together takes Sloane and Garrett on a journey they never could have planned, which will change them in ways they never imagined.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">And Sloane may just find her roots in a place she never would have expected.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><i><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">Roots of Wood and Stone</span></i><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"> is </span><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">set in the area of Kansas Wen has lived in most of her life. In fact, the story is </span><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">inspired by aspects of her own family history. “O</span><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">ne of my favorite things about split time is watching the contemporary characters dig into the past,” Wen explains. “My mother is a genealogist who’s been tracing our family history since before I was born, and her passion for uncovering our family’s stories has been an important backdrop my entire life. Her research has given me an appreciation for those who came before and a desire to pass along this appreciation to my own kids.”</span><span style="color: #4472c4; font-family: Cambria, serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">As an homage to her mother and all the rest of her ancestors, Wen named many of the people and places in the book after family. Parts of their stories are even woven into the historical portion of the book.</span><span style="color: #4472c4; font-family: Cambria, serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="color: #4472c4; font-family: Cambria, serif;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">Wen not only offers readers two plotlines filled with plenty of history and romance wrapped into one story, she mixes in a healthy dose of humor and strong faith elements as well. </span><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">“All my characters have deep needs that they try to fill through other means (achievement, research, hard work, planning, etc.), but throughout the story they learn that only God can fill those needs,” Wen shares. “He has a beautiful plan, one that goes far beyond anything we could ever ask or imagine, and he takes all our broken pieces and loose ends and weaves those trials into a tapestry more beautiful than we could possibly imagine. He is always there, faithfully guiding our steps, even—or perhaps especially—when we’re not aware of it. I hope my readers will trust him, his individual love and care for each of us, and his perfect plan just a little bit more after they close this book.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh47N2tSR9aIkOgw1SaBeeKlDCvjFNWz8zpsxMQWlVUJ_A4mv1Ao48-udpTEO8DK_5ZR7R_cpko4cPmEIlPvb2fw_-xygmmwSirdkkvIvRaRartLEXMxH89RD1lETx5YLxQgPsxk-iMuJk/s373/Amanda+Wen.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" data-original-height="373" data-original-width="248" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh47N2tSR9aIkOgw1SaBeeKlDCvjFNWz8zpsxMQWlVUJ_A4mv1Ao48-udpTEO8DK_5ZR7R_cpko4cPmEIlPvb2fw_-xygmmwSirdkkvIvRaRartLEXMxH89RD1lETx5YLxQgPsxk-iMuJk/s320/Amanda+Wen.jpg" /></span></a></div><div><span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><span style="font-size: x-large;">Amanda Wen <span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">is an award-winning writer of inspirational romance and split-time women’s fiction.
