My first release in Christian fiction was in a series that Murray Pura put together with a small publisher five years ago. How exciting that was to be getting my first story published! Shirley Plantation gave me permission to use the picture on the cover, which truly was taken through the front door at the Great House! This novella remained in the Top 100 in Civil War fiction on Amazon for eight months and was in the top three consistently! That was a real blessing to this debut author!

When I got my rights back to this novella,  Return to Shirley Plantation: A Civil War Romance, a couple of years back, Roseanna White made a beautiful new cover for me! I continue to sell copies of this book every month through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. And in 2018 there will be an AUDIOBOOK coming out, PTL!!! There is a contract with a narrator and we're going forward with this project!

A freed slave not wanting to leave without her niece and nephew.

Where there are dangers all around you. But the neatest part is that it shows that 

they knew Our Lord and he was there for them even as evil was all around.

An absolutely great novella that shows how real our Lord is.

Memorial Day and the Civil War by Carrie Fancett Pagels

Memorial Day began after the Civil War. Never before had so many casualties been caused.  With the advent of the minie ball, a French invention, rifles could be used in combat. One of the reasons there is so much death and gore associated with this war is because of this new type of battle. And thus many field hospitals were required and more injuries than either side thought possible.  Nursing as a profession began out of necessity to treat the injured soldiers.

This is the 400th anniversary of Shirley Plantation in Charles City, Virginia, which served as a field hospital for both Union and Confederate troops.  The ladies of Shirley Plantation rose to the task and assisted in serving the injured.   I can't imagine the mother of adult sons not feeling compassion for those lying in her fields.  

Did you know--Robert E. Lee spent much of his childhood at Shirley Plantation with his mother, one of the Carter daughters?  Former governor and American Revolutionary War hero Henry "Lighthorse" Lee married Anne Carter, his second wife. However,  Anne and Robert lived at Shirley for some time and part of the laundry building at Shirley was converted into a school room for him. There are two versions I have heard of why Henry Lee left his family and departed for the islands. One was that he sought to escape possible imprisonment for debts but the other, per Wikipedia is that he was severely injured while defending a friend from attack, was beaten severely himself, and went to the Indies to recover. Regardless he died on a Georgia island when Robert was about eleven.

This weekend Julian Charity will be doing a book signing at Shirley Plantation on Saturday and on Monday, Memorial Day.  He will be signing his book "Courage at Home and Abroad."

In this engaging Civil War Novella Carrie Fancett Pagels takes us back to the year 1862 where the battle between the states rages on.  So many men were taken from their families never to return again, some were even forced against their will to fight for a cause that was not their own. Such was the case of Matthew Scott, a young man that headed a very successful Theatrical Group in Ohio.

The Shirley Plantation in its hey-day is a beautiful place with well treated slaves. Now that war has come to its doors, the Confederate Army is using it for a hospital for the wounded and the woman are being forced to tend the dying soldiers. When a wounded soldier brings a message from one of their own, they are relieved to hear good news.

Matthew Scott was horrified to find that he, the son of a prominent Copperhead had been viciously conscripted into the Confederate Army. Matthew never wanted to fight in this war, but now it seems he has no choice. After being wounded Matthew is sent to Shirley Plantation and there he meets the most beautiful angel of mercy he has ever seen. Would it make a difference in the way he feels if he knew her secret?

Angelina Rose is staying at Shirley Plantation under the guise of being the widow of a Carter relative.  Even though she is a former slave to look at her no one would guess she is of African descent. Angelina had a job awaiting her as a seamstress in Ohio with a Theatrical Group but she couldn't bear to leave her sister's enslaved children behind. Even more she knows God has told her to wait. When the Confederate Army sequesters the Plantation to use it as a hospital, Angelina's hope to leave all but disappears. While helping the wounded Angelina meets a handsome soldier that seems to tug at her heartstrings. Will God use the unfortunate circumstances of a wounded man to bring about Angelina's deliverance?  

Wow! What a truly remarkable story from this new author. I sincerely enjoyed everything about it; it is so rich in history it shows that Ms. Pagels did a lot of extensive research for it. The setting of Shirley Plantation is a real place that survived the war and it's still around today. After reading this I'm convinced that I need to take a road trip to Virginia. Thank you Ms. Pagels for sharing this enthralling story with us, I am looking forward to reading more of your books in the future.
