Audiobook Review of "The Writing Desk" by Rachel Hauck

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Wedding Dress comes a new captivating novel of secrets, romance, and two women bound together across time by a shared dream.
Tenley Roth’s first book was a runaway bestseller. Now that her second book is due, she’s locked in fear. Can she repeat her earlier success or is she a fraud who has run out of inspiration?
With pressure mounting from her publisher, Tenley is weighted with writer’s block. But when her estranged mother calls asking Tenley to help her through chemotherapy, she packs up for Florida where she meets handsome furniture designer Jonas Sullivan and discovers the story her heart’s been missing.
A century earlier, another woman wrote at the same desk with hopes and fears of her own. Born during the Gilded Age, Birdie Shehorn is the daughter of the old money Knickerbockers. Under the strict control of her mother, her every move is decided ahead of time, even whom she’ll marry. But Birdie has dreams she doesn’t know how to realize. She wants to tell stories, write novels, make an impact on the world. When she discovers her mother has taken extreme measures to manipulate her future, she must choose between submission and security or forging a brand new way all on her own.
Tenley and Birdie are from two very different worlds, but fate has bound them together in a way time cannot erase.

Will Be on OWG's Best of 2017
I listened to this audiobook as a download from Audible.com.

The Writing Desk by Rachel Hauck will be on my 2018 Best of the Year list! Rachel's new novel and my own were on the Romantic Times Book Reviews Top Picks for July 2017  -- what an honor for me, and now that I've read her book I'm pretty blown away that My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island: Maude's Mooring had that opportunity. Rachel's talent shines in every bit of this novel.  I loved it!

Be prepared for Tenley Roth's spiritual arc to be a little different. Tenley isn't a believer. Jonas is a devout young man and talented craftsman. Their sparks are wonderful.  And Birdie (whom I thought was Bertie because of the narrator's pronunciation) is darling. I was rooting for both her and Tenley all along.

There are wonderful twists and turns in this story. You'll be holding your breath in parts and sighing in relief in others!

The narrator made occasional errors in pronunciation. She also used a Southern accent for this New Yorker heroine but if you can overlook that, you're golden.

What a wonderful listen! There are two time slip stories -- a golden age and a contemporary, both connected by a writing desk. At first I wondered if I could listen to the story because of the author aspect of the story, I was worried I'd feel like author intrusion but I was able to get past that because there was so much more story involved that pulled me in.

I like the look of this writing desk at the left! If you could pick a writing desk, what would yours look like?  Mine is a glass and aluminum picnic table with outdoor chair and that works fine for me!

The Wedding Shop by Rachel Hauck -- Audiobook Review

The Wedding Shop by Rachel Hauck -- Audiobook Review

A Thought-Provoking Listen

The narration by Windy Lanzi was very good on this unusual story. As with the other wedding stories in this series, there is a dual timeline. So there is a Christian historical romance and a contemporary romance. Both heroines, however, are struggling with some similar issues. Rachel Hauck does a great job of weaving some surprising backstory elements into the novel.

A heavy topic is addressed in this book -- adultery/infidelity. Also, abandonment both emotionally, by a loved one, and physically, is a theme.

I struggled with the historic romance heroine's commitment to a man that her closest friends were encouraging her to forget about. But she's pretty much "Stupid-in-Love" and sometimes that happens.   Not addressed much in Christian fiction, but this obsessive love with blinders on happens, and can have terrible consequences. Without the second contemporary storyline carrying it forward, with that heroine struggling with, but regretting and repenting of her bad decisions, I may have abandoned the listen. But the two stories are interwoven and sometimes harsh situations need to have some light shed upon them.

This listen will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride. You'll be booing some characters and cheering on others. You'll get angry with the author and then be thrilled later with how she skillfully takes the characters through their arcs. One of the marks of a well-written book is how unforgettable it is and The Wedding Shop will make a mark on the reader, who will recall the novel's powerful messages long after they've finished the novel.

I purchased my audiobook of The Wedding Shop by Rachel Hauck as an audible.com download.  This story is available in paperback, ebook, and audiobook. Available at Christian bookstores and is an ECPA Bestseller.

Diana's Review Of 'A Royal Christmas Wedding' By Rachel Hauck

A Royal Christmas Wedding

A Royal Christmas Wedding

(No spoilers!)
Simply Enchanting!

Rachel Hauck has crafted a magical Yuletide tale set in Brighton, England, an emerald isle steeped in traditionwhere the crisp scent of pine and cinnamon waft through the frosty airand snow-covered, beautifully lit fir trees, costumed carolers, and the sound of sleigh bells can be heard ringing throughout the town!

Avery Truitt, college volleyball star in St. Simons Island, Georgia, was rejected by the man of her dreams five long years ago, Prince Colin of Brighton Kingdom. After declaring their love for one another, Colin fails to show up for her prom and after texting her once, never speaks to her again. But the joy of her sister's pregnancy brings Avery to Brighton to visit her at the royal palace, just in time for the Cathedral City's enchanting Christmas season. Wishing to attend the many holiday festivities, dances, and charities, she knows she cannot possibly avoid seeing Colin again, but hopes for some kind of closure to finally relieve the pain of the past five years.

A centuries old tradition in Brighton dictates that a young man smitten with love runs all the way up the one hundred and eighty-two steps to the Pembroke Bell Tower and rings the bell just after midnight of the Harvest Celebration to declare his undying devotion. Then he must woo the object of his affections and marry her by Christmas. Is it too late for Colin to fix things with Averyand will he follow his heart to ring the Pembroke Chapel Bell for her or his lady friend, Jordan Skye? Or will he ring the bell at all?...since the last young man to do so plummeted to his death.

Rachel Hauck is a New York Times bestselling award winning author with many an amazing novel to her credit and this one is no exception! It seems as though all of us ladies still have that little girl in us who comes to the surface from time to timedreaming of  our Prince Charming and happily-ever-after. That young girl in me absolutely delighted in this enchanting Christmas novel of love lost, and of the handsome prince who must atone for his inconsiderate deeds to win back the lady he adores. But, ooh, the angsty romance quickly brought the woman in me (and the tissue box!) back out, and a twist near the end made my heart skip one too many beats! Ms. Hauck's descriptive prose intensified my senses with the scent of evergreen boughs, the sights of Christmas lights glistening underneath a layer of snow, and the sounds of Bing Crosby crooning White Christmas. A Royal Christmas Wedding is simply begging to be made into a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie and if so I'll grab a front row seat! Very beautifully written, Rachel Hauck!

This book may be purchased through Amazon, CBD, BAM, and your local bookstore.

GIVEAWAY: Rachel Hauck is generously giving away a paperback copy of A Royal Christmas Wedding to one commenter! (US entrants only!) Please be sure to leave your email address written (at) and (dot) to protect yourself from spammers!

How to Catch a GREAT Listen!!!

By Carrie Fancett Pagels

How I missed this audiobook when it released in 2015, I do not know! But I think it is because it came out right before I had major emergency surgery that put me in the hospital for a while. But, was I ever happy to discover that I had this title in my Audible.com library collection!!! I just listened to it this past weekend.

This is a Christian contemporary romance set initially in America and later abroad in the fictional kingdom of Brighton. I saw one person give a low rating online because the story was Christian. That's what I love about Rachel's books, besides them being so well written -- she doesn't shy away from rock solid faith.

Spoiler alert: I want to say I love, love, loved two very "special" characters in this book who weren't actually of the earthly realm. Extremely well done use of these angelic characters in the storyline.

Bibliotherapy: Survivor's guilt, PTSD, keeping secrets, loss of a sibling, loss of a friend, parental grieving, and a few more!

Narrator: The narrator did an excellent job. There were a couple of times when I'm pretty sure she mispronounced words, i.e., I don't think those were the British pronunciations either. But she had an enthusiasm for the story that showed.

What a unique twist to have a prince be the survivor of a military attack on his unit. He blames himself for the deaths of his friends. His case of survivor guilt is pretty extreme, but it makes sense in this story.

The heroine is a beautiful former Miss Georgia from an extremely wealthy family, but Rachel Hauck makes her very likable and relatable.

Great writing, great story line, fabulous characters, beautiful voice, and nice narration -- all wrapped up in a great Christian fiction listen. What else can you ask for?

Giveaway and Audiobook Review of The Wedding Chapel by Rachel Hauck

Premise: A lonely wedding chapel built as a tribute to lost love just might hold the long-awaited secret to hope and reconciliation.
Will History Repeat Itself?
Rachel Hauck has really hit her stride with this lovely audiobook. The narrator wasn't quite right, she failed on the British accents, but the story overcame those issues!
At the center of this story is a sixty year old wedding chapel, hidden on an elderly former coach's property.  While I loved the dual stories (I am not a contemporary fiction fan but I love Rachel's stories) with a romance from sixty years earlier between an English immigrant, Collette, and a football player, Jimmy, plus a modern day photographer, Taylor,  impulsively married to a rising star adman, Jack, with heavy childhood baggage he's failed to overcome. We are also treated to the historical heroine's romance moving to modern times, when she is in her early 80s and newly retired from her famous career as a soap opera star. Rachel Hauck does a great job of painting out Collette Greer's toxic (super toxic!) sister in gradual strokes.
When all the players end up back in Heart’s Bend, all the secrets come barreling out! You have to wait through the story and one I had guessed but the other not, so that was an interesting twist.  I have to say, with twenty-five years as a psychologist, that without God, the outcome for the young couple would not have occurred.
A super satisfying ending, which all readers want, will give the reader double enjoyment!!! Highly recommend!

A deep and multi-layered plot!

Bibliotherapy elements: Deception, toxic relationships, lost love, second chances, marital issues, abused/abandoned child and impact on life, adoption, and so many more! This is a bibliotherapy delight with lots of emotional impact!

The Wedding Chapel can be purchased on Amazon

Rachel Hauck Interview -- Overcoming Anxiety

Author Rachel Hauck
Rachel, welcome to Overcoming With God.  We appreciate your willingness to share your testimony of overcoming with our readers.
Thanks for having me.

Would you tell us about the one of the most difficult things in your life you have had to overcome, with God’s help?
When I first moved to central Florida after college for my first “career” job, a doctor prescribed hormones to correct an issue I was having. Oh boy… I thought I was going crazy. I was hit with anxiety and panic, fear, and once I quit taking the prescription, I still battled the emotions. I had to travel for my job and getting on a plane was a fight sometimes. I felt claustrophobic and all kinds of not-so-fun emotions. But, I got on the plane anyway. I knew giving in would only strengthen “the enemy.” It was a difficult at times but also a season of drawing near to the Lord, changing, growing, excelling in my faith and in my relationship with Jesus. I KNOW prayer works. I KNOW the Word is living and active.

The good news is His peace and confidence replaced all the negative emotions.

What passages in the Bible have been most helpful to you in those times?

Many verses guided me through this times. 2 Timothy 1:7, “God has not given me a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind.”
1 John 4:18 - “Perfect love cast out all fear.”
1 Peter 5:6 - “Cast your cares up on Him because He cares for you.”
Phil 4:6-8 “Be anxious for nothing….”
And probably almost ever Psalm. The Bible is RICH with power and words for our deepest fears and emotions.

What helped you get through or helped you cope with this difficulty?
Prayer. Really. It was a season of prayer and worship, of being in fellowship with people who loved Jesus.

Disability friendliness: Is this latest release available in audio format or do you have any other works available on audio?  Do your e-books have audio capability? Do you have any in large print?
Yes, all of my latest releases are available in audio as well as large print!

In this latest work, do you have any topics useful for bibliotherapy, or therapeutic influence through reading about a disorder or situation?
?? Not sure what this means exactly. ;)
CFP: See my review on Thursday and also look up top for our definition of bibliotherapy.

Question you’d like to ask readers:
I love to hear from readers! What makes you stick with an author for every book?

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR WRITING!!!
RH: Thank you for having me. God bless you all!!

GIVEAWAY: We're giving away a paperback copy, this week, of Rachel Hauck's wonderful novel, "The Wedding Chapel." Answer this question -- what helps you cope when you get fearful?

Carrie's Favorites of 2013

AUDIOBOOKS of 2013
Audiobooks are my primary source of reading. I have to keep up with comparable books/authors as an inspirational historical romance author myself.  Sometimes I don't wait for the audiobook to come out but these first set of books all have an audiobook available with them. I have some very short reviews I've posted on audible.com (click here for Carrie's audible reviews.)
The Letters by Suzanne Woods Fisher

The Letters and The Lesson by Suzanne Woods Fisher (Revell/Brilliance Audio). The Lesson is the most powerful story, personally, I've listen to all year because of the drug abuse component and how it affects families.  I think it would make an amazing bibliotherapy book for those doing drug and alcohol treatment with families. I hereby award this book my Bibliotherapy Book of the Year. This book is raw. It is real. It doesn't flinch at what addiction can do to someone.

The Lesson by Suzanne Woods Fisher
My Bibliotherapy Book of the Year

My Runner Up for Bibliotherapy Book of the Year is "It Happened at the Fair" which deals with deafness. Absolutely stunning audiobook (Tantor Audio.)
It Happened at the Fair by Deeanne Gist

Jennifer Dellamere's An Heiress At Heart. Lovely audiobook. (Recorded Books)
Jennifer Dellamere's An Heiress At Heart

Tracie Peterson - My
Author of the Year 2013.

All THREE of Tracie's Minnesota audiobook  releases in Land of Shining Water (Baker) were wonderful in this series: The Quarryman's Bride, The Icecutter's Daughter and The Miner's Lady. Tracie is a master crafter of words!

Once Upon A Prince

I don't normal read contemporary fiction but this audiobook was AMAZING!!!
Once Upon A Prince

PAPERBACK/EBOOK ONLY--No Audiobook (yet!)

Promise to Return by Elizabeth Byler Younts

Elizabeth Byler Younts novel Promise to Return (Howard) has "sticking" power and I  love the story, the voice especially, and characterization in this WWII Amish story. Beautifully done by a lovely lady.

C.J. Chase's The Reluctant Earl.  LOVED this book. I know C.J. but even if I didn't, this book should be used as an example of HOW TO write tight and make every word count in an inspirational historical romance.  Published by Love Inspired Historical. Because of the bibliotherapy elements being so strong and the quality of this book, I am naming it my Paperback/ebook-only Book of the Year.

The Reluctant Earl by C.J. Chase --Carrie's Top choice for Paperback/Ebook Book of 2013

NOTE my ADDITIONAL AUTHORS:  If you've been reading the other OWG ladies' favorites, then you've also seen some of mine.  So Cheater Cheater Pumpkin Eater--I won't include them for pictures!

BUT I have on my 2013 favorites list the same as my OWG angels' lists:
Julie Lessman's* Love At Any Cost (Revell), Julie Klassen's* The Tutor's Daughter (Bethany), MaryLu Tyndall's (no audiobook) Forsaken Dreams (Barbour), and Karen Witemeyer's* Stealing the Preacher (Bethany). ENJOYED all these releases and they are ALSO on my list as are:

Debut authors: Lori Benton's BURNING SKY (Waterbrook) and Sarah Ladd's Heiress of Winterwood (Thomas Nelson). Both of these books will likely be up for debut book of the year for Christy or other awards.) Sarah Ladd's audiobook - Do NOT listen to the audiobook version.  It is awful.  But the book is not.  It is lovely. I had the privilege of being Sarah's critique partner a couple of years back when she was writing and editing this book, before it was picked up for publication. Lori Benton's book was not available in audiobook when I read it. Lori is a member of Colonial American Christian Writers and served on Colonial Quills. An amazing book and powerful debt. Lori has been writing for over twenty years and has completed numerous manuscripts and it shows in her story, voice, and characterization. Loved this book!!!

If you haven't read all these authors' 2013 releases BUY THEM NOW!!!

GIVEAWAY:  Gently used copy of Promise to Return. New copy of The Reluctant Earl. Answer the question--How many of Carrie's favorites are on your list, too?

The Wedding Dress by Rachel Hauck Reviewed by Carrie Fancett Pagels

The Wedding Dress | [Rachel Hauck]

This book, The Wedding Dress by Rachel Hauck,  has won so many awards and received so many accolades including the Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writer's Conference Selah award for best romance (I was there for that one recently, at Ridgeway conference center in North Carolina!) I have to wonder if Rachel has lost count!  Whenever a book is getting that kind of attention there is a reason.  Solid writing, voice, and unique story deliver a great listening experience for the reader.

I listened to it on audiobook as an audible.com download.  The story jumps around between four different women affected by the dress, including a current day woman.  The book lists as a contemporary but has many historical stories within it.  Rachel primarily writes contemporary fiction.

This was a really good listen. I think the regular book format might be better (particularly if you don't have any vision problems) because there are so many stories going on it may be easier to keep them straight.  But the narrator did a good job of capturing the different voices. And since finding a great Christian audiobook is difficult I simply recommend that if you purchase in audio then don't plan on doing other things while you are listening. You won't want to miss out on the story.

You'll not find anything else out there quite like Rachel's book--at least not any time lately and I think that is one of the reasons for this books appeal.  It is fresh and unique--you won't be bored or even think about declaring that it is the same old same old often found in Christian fiction, because it is not!  Not that I am prone to say this but I did hear another reader recently make this comment.

Spoiler alert: My one objection to the story is a scene that while it is very exciting has strong associations for me.  Because I am a history buff (AKA history nerd) and love colonial history in particular there is something that happens that occurred in churches during wartime and is one of the ultimate insults or desecration of the church.  That really bothered me.  But I think someone who primarily enjoys romance wouldn't see it that way at all because they wouldn't realize the connotation and because it is not a wartime event. In fact my husband, when I told him of the scene, commented that most romance readers should find that scene particularly romantic!  My inner nerd won out on that scene, I am afraid.

Giveaway: We are giving away a copy of any of Rachel's books this week, winners choice of format.  You can choose any of her wonderful books as a paperback, ebook, or audio download (like this great book!) if available.

Marian Baay Reviews Once Upon A Prince By Rachel Hauck

Once Upon A Prince

Reviewed by Marian Baay
~5 stars~*****

After Susanna Truitt’s boyfriend, Adam, told her he’d found “the right ring but not the right girl”, twelve years of waiting and living by ‘the plan’ collapses.
Shortly thereafter Susanna meets this handsome stranger, Nate Kenneth, to whom she unburdens her heart, while he is fixing her car.

Nathaniel is on his last carefree vacation on St. Simons Island. His father is the king of Brighton Kingdom, and severely ill. Nathaniel is the crown prince and his father has told him he will be king within the year. After his first meeting with Susanna he is soon going to meet her again and help her to get to the hospital to see her father.

With her father in the hospital, the family restaurant needs extra help. Nate is offering an extra hand and is obviously enjoying cleaning the dishes, scrubbing the bathroom, and taking out the garbage. When one day he leaves a Brightonian coin with his face on it, Susanna finds out he is a prince.

Their next meeting is a bit awkward but they stay friends anyway. When feelings run deeper, Nathaniel knows he must tell Susanna that he—as crown prince—is not allowed to marry a foreigner; back home he is expected to propose to a woman he doesn’t love. When Nathaniel is explaining to Susanna why he can’t marry her, he gets a phone call and learns that his father has died. He leaves immediately and Susanna doesn’t hear from him again.

Both their lives go on and Susanna and Nathaniel battle questions about God’s plan for their lives. They must learn to completely surrender themselves to God—learn to fully trust Him.

Then 5 months later Susanna receives an invitation for the coronation of King Nathaniel in Brighton…
Together with her younger sister, Susanna travels to Brighton Kingdom. She has no idea who has invited her or if she will get a chance to speak to Nathaniel in private. Susanna and her sister will be living a fairytale during their stay.
Is there a chance to love for Nathaniel and Susanna, despite the odds?

I enjoyed this story for several reasons; the writing style is very pleasant, the characters are oh so lovely, and I read this book just before the coronation of our Dutch King—so I really was in the mood for it and had twice as much fun reading it.
Nicely done, Rachel!

Interview with Rachel Hauck--Overcoming Anxiety by Carrie Fancett Pagels

Rachel Hauck

RachelHauck is the author of Once Upon A Prince and of RITA nominated The Wedding Dress and RITA nominated Love Starts with Elle. She is the author of more than 16 books.

Rachel, welcome to Overcoming With God.  We appreciate your willingness to share your testimony of overcoming with our readers.

Would you tell us about the most difficult thing in your life you have had to overcome, with God’s help?

RH: First, thank you for having me on OWG. I am an overcomer. In my late teens, then again in my mid-20’s I battled sudden anxiety and panic. There wasn’t a lot of talk in those days of “panic attacks” but they would hit me out of the blue and last for a few seconds, but over time, the fear of them happening or getting worse lingered.

That fear was worse than the actual “event.”

I could actually write a book about my experience and how the Lord met me. Let me just affirm and confirm, prayer and the Word work! We can overcome anything in Him.

My battle was a cocktail of hormones, open doors to the enemy, and maybe a bit of inheritance from my family. Either way, I was determined to win. I had to take up my cross daily. I had a scripture verse for fear, for peace, for love, for overcoming, for every errant thought.

I believed God’s Word was true and it would deliver me and heal me.

He is true to His Word.

I walk in peace and joy. The unfounded fears and panic are no longer a part of my life. I truly understand “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

For anyone struggling emotionally or spiritually, devour God’s Word. Make it your “bread and water. It will give you life. Change you in ways you cannot imagine.
The Wedding Dress | Rachel Hauck
Disability friendliness: Is this latest release available in audio format or do you have any other works available on audio?  Do your e-books have audio capability? Do you have any in large print?

RH: I have no control over the audio versions or audio capability. I would love for Once Upon a Prince to be released in audio format. Hopefully it will soon. But I do believe e-readers have audio capability and this book will be released in e-book. So, check your Kindle or Nook for reading aloud features.

(Note: Rachel's "The Wedding Dress" and three books with Sara Evans are available on audible.com.)

In this latest work, do you have any topics useful for bibliotherapy, or therapeutic influence through reading about a disorder or situation?
RH: Most of my stories are about the love of the Lord and His passion for us, or His divine plan for us. In Once Upon A Prince, we meet Susanna who thought she knew what her life was going to be – she had a plan – but when her boyfriend breaks up with her instead of proposing, she is confused and lost.

Her journey is about surrendering completely. I think for anyone struggling we find ourselves battling the desire to cling to what we know – even if it’s negative – and leaping out in faith and trusting God.

It’s hard to trust a God we don’t know well or actually see. But it’s actually in that place God begins to meet us.

Susanna must face the same choice. Keep doing things her way or leap out in faith and believe God.

Plus, she meets a prince. Sigh… It’s an encouraging story!

Thank you Rachel for agreeing to answer these questions.  Have a blessed day and keep on writing!!

RH: Thank you for having me!
