Mount Hope - An Amish Retelling of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park

A Wunderbar Amish Classic!

Eloquent and masterful storyteller, Sarah Price, pens a unique Amish tale superbly blended with Jane Austen's classic, Mansfield Park, and distinctly makes it her own! In this timeless tale we perceive that the road to love is oftentimes very rocky and appearances can be very deceiving.

When her father can no longer provide for his family he sends Fanny Price to live with her aunt's family in Mount Hope, Ohio. Never feeling a part of the Bontrager family, Fanny is basically a loner—not taking part in the young people's activities and singings—but choosing instead to stay at home and do whatever work is needed on the large prosperous farm. Befriended only by her aunt's stepson, Elijah, Fanny so yearns for their special friendship to turn into something deeper.

However, when two strangers visit their Amish community—the lovely, Mary Coblentz and her charming, flirtatious brother, Henry—Elijah's attentions are swiftly diverted, much to Fanny's dismay. What ensues are plenty of twists and turns as the roguish Henry causes plenty of jealousies to arise, Elijah becomes besotted with Mary, and the heartbroken Fanny finds herself with a suitor as well. Will he help her to forget the only man she has ever loved?

Author Sarah Price has written a fascinating tale of deceit, betrayal, and unrequited love that finely parallels Jane Austen's classic masterpiece! I literally could not put it down except out of necessity. Fanny is truly a stick-in-the-mud, but with good reason. She tries so hard to gain acceptance from her new family by doing everything for them, that she loses herself in the process. She so seldom laughed or had fun, that when she did it brought a smile to my face as well. I so wanted her to find her mouth even if I had to shake her to bring that about! lol I honestly didn't care who Fanny ended up with as long as she was happy and I wasn't at all sure who that "someone" would be until almost the very end of the book. I love unpredictable and that's why I so enjoyed this "out of the box" Amish book with its capricious characters! You don't have to be an Amish book lover or even a Jane Austen fan to thoroughly relish this enjoyable, never boring new release! Be sure to order your copy today!

This book may be purchased through Amazon, CBD, BAM, and your local bookstore.

 An Amish Classic!
What transpires when you blend Jane Austen's memorable characters with Sarah Price's unique Amish voice? A classic retelling of Sense and Sensibility is born—a truly captivating tale of two sisters who must learn the hard way that the road to love is sometimes incredibly rocky—and appearances can often be painfully deceptive!
While on his deathbed, Henry Detweiler exacts a promise from his eldest son from a previous marriage, John, to take care of his second wife and daughters Eleanor, Mary Ann, and Maggie. However, when John's wife, Fanny, moves to their farm she makes no bones about her feelings for Mrs. Detweiler and her daughters, and proceeds to make life miserable for them. Edwin Fisher, Fanny's brother, is not at all like his sister and Eleanor begins to fall for him despite the fact that he has shown her nothing but friendship. When a relative makes a way for the Detweilers to move into a small cottage in the Amish community of Quarryville, they jump at the chance.

While Eleanor quietly pines for Edwin and wonders if he will visit, her impetuous sister, Mary Ann, welcomes the attentions of the very handsome and charming John Willis, falling head over heels in love after only knowing him for a short while. Will these two sisters with very dissimilar temperaments and different approaches to love receive the proposals they long for...or will both be left heartbroken and alone?
I absolutely loved this delightful novel and finished it in two short evenings! In my opinion, Sarah Price has truly shown her phenomenal writing skills in this novel as never before! Although I have always enjoyed her books this one has to go down as my favorite. You'll find yourself reaching for the tissues as the Detweiler sisters have to suffer pain and heartache to learn humility and gain maturity...especially the impulsive Mary Ann. Sarah Price has splendidly brought my best-loved Jane Austen tale to life—a modern day masterpiece for "sure and certain" (as the Amish would say!)

Author Sarah Price does an outstanding job re-telling the story of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility -- one of my favorite movies starring Emma Thompson as the sensible Elinor Dashwood, and Kate Winslet as her sister, the impetuous Marianne!

Diana's Review Of Secret Sister - An Amish Christmas Tale By Sarah Price

Realms, Oct. 2015

(No spoilers!)

It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year!

In Secret Sister, author Sarah Price has written a heartwarming Amish yuletide tale of bewildering secrets and love lost—set amongst the fragrant scent of pine, the soft glow of candles, and crystalline snowflakes ushering in the Christmas season.

Feeling so very alone and heartbroken from recently losing Menno – the love of her life – not to mention her children growing up and moving into different communities, Grace Beiler is truly suffering in silence. It is the Amish way to accept God's will in all things and not to question or complain about one's lot in life. Although her Amish community is kind to her, Grace feels like a fifth wheel when they offer to give her rides or invite her places with their families. Soon strange events begin to take place when Grace starts receiving notes and gifts that cause her to reflect on meaningful incidents in her past—when she and Menno were young and courting, and their subsequent life with their children. Apparently Grace has a "secret sister" who is seeking to encourage her, but who is she?...and how is she aware of these things that are only significant to Grace? As she attends her favorite event of the year which happens to be the Christmas program, Grace receives another gift—one that will change the course of her life forever.

In Secret Sister masterful storyteller, Sarah Price, has written an exquisite novel destined to become a Christmas classic! What an intricate, unpredictable plot! In one evening I literally read half of this book trying to figure out who the "secret sister" was and I never did. Being an empty nester myself, I could truly identify with Grace's inability to know just where she belonged after devoting her whole life to raising her children. I didn't just have tears in my eyes at the wonderful conclusion—they were literally streaming down my cheeks—I was that moved. For those of you who don't want to read a story about a more "mature" woman (lol)...have no fear. The book goes back and forth between past and present and there is plenty of blushing romance and drama, too! Highly recommended read for any time of the year!

A Totally Classic Tale!

In Second Chances, masterful storyteller Sarah Price pens a delightful retelling of the classic tale of Jane Austen's Persuasion harmoniously intermingled with the Amish! The Amish community in Ohio where lovely Anna Eicher resides is peaceful, and beautifully replete with rolling hills and white picket fences, grazing Guernsey cows, and red barns with lofty silos. But life also has its problems and heartaches as Anna knows all too well.

It's been eight long years since Anna broke up with Freman Whittmore, the man of her dreams, and nary a night has gone by that she has not spilled tears on her pillow from the pain of their separation. She had allowed her father and a close family friend to persuade her to break it off with Freman on the grounds that he was not good enough for her. Freman moves to Indiana and becomes quite successful, and much to Anna's amazement returns after lo these many years to find a wife. Anna patiently looks after her complaining sister's children, still pleasing her family at the expense of her own happiness. Watching Freman and her close friend, Leah, flirting and spending time together just adds to her misery. Will Anna ever learn the valuable lesson of saying "no" to people and yes to God?...and will the God of second chances grant her just one more?

Readers everywhere will fall in love with the frustrating Anna, who in her inability to say "no" to others, brings much heartache upon her own self. At times I wanted to shake her and say, "Stop doing this!!", but realizing she couldn't brought a tear to my eye. An eloquent tale of family, forgiveness, second chances, and a surprise twist at the end -- this is one that will long be remembered even after the last sigh-worthy page is turned!

Diana's Review Of An Empty Cup By Sarah Price

An Empty Cup By Sarah Price

               Is Your Cup Empty?

In An Empty Cup, Sarah Price has once again written a unique, heartrending tale of hard lessons learned, and the struggles and burdens of one Amish mother that parallels the harsh realities that many women from all walks of life face as well.

Rosanna Zook was the victim of an abusive and loveless marriage, one in which she totally lost her identity taking care of those around her and trying to keep the peace. Having very little self-esteem or feelings of self worth, Rosanna believes that in order to please God she cannot say "no" to others and wears herself out in the process. When a tragedy occurs she is given a second chance at love with her new husband, Reuben Troyer, a godly man who cherishes her and her two children. But Rosanna lacks the self-confidence and the ability to turn others down and as she gives her life to family, friends, and community there is no time left for herself. She becomes an empty shell of a person, exhausted, and unhappy. When she becomes very ill, she has to confront the ultimate question – can one empty cup fill another? Will she learn the hard way that God wants her life to be blessed by others as well?…and can she unashamedly accept that?

Having lived amongst the Amish, masterful storyteller Sarah Price doesn't present a cookie cutter, cushy view of them but a realistic one. They have problems, vices, and weaknesses just as the Englisch (term used for non-Amish people) do. I know so many well meaning family members, friends, and acquaintances that will thoroughly benefit from reading this wonderfully written, touching novel! God's grace is sufficient and we don't have to work our way into His kingdom. This book is not your typical boy meets girl romance, but it touched me deep down in my soul and will forever remain there. For I also had to overcome many self-esteem issues in my adulthood as the result of growing up under an abusive, alcoholic father. I totally "get" Rosanna and her need for self-affirmation. TOTALLY. Is your cup empty, my friend? Read this compelling story and find out! Highly recommended!

Simply Delightful Amish Fiction!

In her own distinctive voice, Sarah Price has created a wealth of memorable, delightful characters in The Matchmaker. Readers will love this unique blend of the Amish and Jane Austen's classic tale, Emma -- the story of an opinionated young lady who must learn the hard way that best laid plans may sometimes go awry.

Emma Weaver's heart is in the right place in spite of her meddlesome ways. Just because she has no desire to be burdened down with a husband and children does not mean she cannot help others find their way to wedded bliss. With her smile as her armor and her laughter as her shield, she is content to help the widows in her Amish community and her aged father as well. After all, Emma feels that there is a 'lid for every pot' so to speak (except herself), and it is her place to sort all that out. However, will all of Emma's well-meaning schemes backfire on her?...and does she ever learn that matchmaking is best left in the hands of God!?

To be quite honest with you, before I truly "met" Emma, I wanted to shake her. Filled with pride and a judgmental attitude, I felt that the good she did came from a pious self-righteous opinion of herself. But oh, how she finally endeared herself to me as she evolved throughout the story. Sarah Price portrays the Amish as human...who make mistakes and must own up to them, unlike many other Amish novels that portray them as being "perfect." I laughed out loud at some of Emma's antics and sayings, along with the secondary characters' as well. And I shed a few tears at the satisfying conclusion. With unpredictable twists and turns that Sarah Price is so well known for, and a charming main character that is not your typical Amish heroine -- this harmonious mix of contemporary and classic is truly a "match made" in heaven!

Diana's Review of An Amish Buggy Ride by Sarah Price

An Amish Buggy Ride

In that unique voice of hers, Sarah Price has penned a heartrending but lovely story of romance, secrets, guilt, and shame – under the guise of a seemingly perfect Amish community; overflowing with colorful daffodils, robin red-breasts, and sparkling, fish-filled rivers.

Kate is a lovely young Amish woman, whose life and the lives of her entire family were changed the night a terrible tragedy took place. Feeling responsible, Kate's life consists of helping her father run the family farm, attending church, and helping her aunt with her new baby. After all, how could she possibly go to singings, laugh, and be social as if nothing had ever happened? Her life is made even more miserable by the guilt piled on her by an obnoxious family member and the obvious darkness hovering over her family. When the handsome and friendly Samuel Esh comes into Kate's life she has no social skills, but slowly begins to open up as a rosebud in the summer sun. However, she knows deep down she can never have Samuel for she has greatly sinned, not once but twice…

In her own exquisite style, Sarah Price has once again penned a unique "out-of-the box" Amish tale guaranteed to captivate the reader from page one! Ms. Price masterfully writes of an Amish community – where the consequences of keeping dark secrets are as far reaching as the ripples in a stream, and where love hides a multitude of sins! An Amish Buggy Ride is truly a wonderful story of romance and redemption, and one that made me cry because of the stark reality of the storyline. Not your typical cookie cutter Amish read – be sure to put this one at the top of your wishlist!

"Pink Umbrella Attitude" Sarah Price - Breast Cancer Survivor

Author Sarah Price with Pink Umbrella

Sarah Price, welcome to Overcoming With God.  We appreciate your willingness to share your testimony of overcoming with our readers.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have been fascinated with my father’s family history. Both my paternal grandfather and my grandmother have histories that can be traced back to the 1500s.  In the early 1700s, they emigrated from Europe to escape persecution for their religious beliefs. I cannot imagine how they felt standing on the deck of a ship, watching as Europe disappeared as they sailed to the New World.

I have a great admiration their determination to overcome their fears and stand by their beliefs, not matter what the cost. That motivates me. When I think about all of those people who left everything behind for religious freedom, I know that I, too, can overcome anything as long as I have God in my life.

Would you tell us about the most difficult thing in your life you have had to overcome, with God’s help?
I’ve had several situations that have been difficult to overcome so it’s hard to answer with just one particular difficulty. However, dealing with breast cancer has been one of the toughest challenges in my life, not because of the cancer or the treatment but because I have been determined to avoid letting cancer impact my life. From the moment that I heard those words “We found cancer…”, I have faced cancer with the strength of my faith behind me. To this day, I believe that having cancer was a gift, a way of proving to myself (and to others) that there is nothing in this life that we cannot face if God is at the core of our lives.

My nurses and doctors have all remarked about my attitude during the past eighteen months. My oncologist was amazed during my first months of chemotherapy that I was not ill or tired. From day one of my diagnosis, I have refused to let cancer dictate to me how I am supposed to feel. Instead, I let God guide me. He wants me to be happy, regardless of what happens today, tomorrow, or further in the future. And part of being happy is thinking happy:Keep your heart with all due diligence, for out of it are the issues of life(Proverbs 4:23 MEV).

Another way of looking at it is by applying what I call my Pink Umbrella attitude. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was given these yucky, chalky drinks to take before certain medical tests (translation: barium sulfate suspension aka the CT Smoothie). I told the doctor and nurses that I wouldn’t drink them unless I had a pink umbrella to put in the drink. My husband went to countless stores to find me the little pink umbrellas, a fancy glass, and straws with pink flamingos on them! That’s a Pink Umbrella attitude.

A more sophisticated way to look at it is a quote that I saw on the wall of the hospital as I was leaving my oncologist’s office. I loved the quote so much that I’ve adopted it as my personal philosophy:
Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass… It’s about learning to dance in the rain.
The only thing that I like to add to that quote is to dance in the rain with a pink umbrella. You see, life isn’t about waiting for things to happen but it’s about living life…it’s about making things happen and, if they don’t happen, accepting it!

I accept that I have no control over what happens. But I do have control over my efforts to contribute to my happiness by trying! And, remember, with God, all things are possible. Since He has a plan for me, if it doesn’t happen, there’s a reason. Who am I to question it?

What passages in the Bible have been most helpful to you in those times?
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

I always say “Who am I to question what God wants?” During tumultuous times in my life, I don’t ask “Why me?” The answer to that question would be Why not you? I’m not different than anyone else so why should I be exempt from issues related to hardship, heartache, or health?
While I enjoy the good times in life, I have also learned to accept the bad times. I know that God has a plan for me. That doesn’t mean we should just sit around and wait for God’s gifts. I believe in hard work: physically, mentally, and spiritually. I make time to read Scripture every day. Most recently, I have been reading a new version of the Bible, the Modern English Version (MEV), and I have become even more convinced that God’s purpose for all of us is known only to Him. It’s a wonderful translation (I highly recommend it!).

Disability friendliness: Is this latest release available in audio format or do you have any other works available on audio?  Do your e-books have audio capability? Do you have any in large print?

My latest book, An Amish Buggy Ride, is available in audio format. I’m very excited about this. Many of my readers have requested audio books and this is my first book that has been professionally recorded. I was at the studio at Brilliance Audio in Grand Haven, Michigan when Amy McFadden recorded it. What an amazing experience! To see the professional equipment and all of the technicians supporting her, including a dedicated director…it was a humbling experience, for sure and certain! Being a visual learner, I never thought that I would personally be able to sit through an audio book. Now, I am hooked. It’s a wonderful way to listen to my favorite books such as classics as well as historical biographies.

CFP: That is so cool, Sarah! I love audiobooks and that must have been so amazing to watch and listen!

In this latest work, do you have any topics useful for bibliotherapy, or therapeutic influence through reading about a disorder or situation?
This is a fantastic question and I’m very pleased to respond with a loud (all capitals) YES! Several years ago, I had a most unfortunate experience with cyber-bullying that eventually involved police, lawyers, detectives, and the FBI. I realized that bullying is not something that is limited to the hallways of a school. Bullying can be done by grown adults (and professed Christians, at that) to the point of criminal conduct! Yet, most states do not have laws protecting adults from bullying. In fact, bullying across state lines requires that the proof of burden (and the expense, as well!) is the responsibility of the victim…thus victimized twice! Using this experience, I managed to write a series of novellas about bullying within the Amish community and I have been a guest speaker at numerous schools and organizations about bullying.

Additionally, my two upcoming books published by Waterfall Press, An Amish Buggy Ride (November 2014) and An Empty Cup (April 2015) deal with two other issues: emotional abuse and depression. These books are unlike any of my others. They incorporate elements of my own personal life in the hopes that the readers will realize that they are not alone when dealing with such tough issues.

Emotional abuse is a very serious problem that is often unaddressed. It can come from family members, professional colleagues, and, of course, spouses. In some cases, it can even come from strangers. The psychological damage, however, does not go away easily. How does a person deal with that? The result can often lead to depression.

I’m not a psychologist, nor a psychiatrist. But I do know that the public stigma (whether real or imaginary) that goes along with being emotionally abused or having depression hinders women from seeking help. These two books help address the healing process and, I hope, will assist my readers to recognize the signs, whether in their own lives or in someone else’s.

CFP: I was a psychologist for 25 years. The first intervention we were taught was the use of books, or bibliotherapy, to help clients cope with issues! Thank you for tackling these tough topics and I'm sure they will help many people out there!

Question you’d like to ask readers:
I’m going to address my question to readers of Amish fiction. For over twenty-five years, I have had the privilege to stay on Amish farms and in their homes. Through my writing, I share my first-hand experiences with my readers. My first question to my readers is whether they are more curious in the culture or the religion of the Amish (and why)? My second question is, if given to chance to meet an Amish person, what are two questions they would ask them?

A Fascinating Tale of Pride and Prejudice

In her own eloquent, exquisite style, author Sarah Price has penned a delightful Amish tale — reminiscent of the timeless classic by the memorable Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice.

Lizzie Blank lives a contented life on a modest farm with her parents and four sisters, in a close knit Amish community in Pennsylvania. The Blank household – especially Lizzie's mother – is abuzz with excitement upon learning that the rental farm next door would soon be occupied with three marriageable young Amish men from Ohio! The matriarch of the Blank family had spent many a sleepless night wondering who might take over the farm someday; having five daughters, no sons, and not many single men in the community.

When Charles Beachey arrives with his cousin, George Wickey, and a friend, Frederick Detweiler, it is not long before the sparks begin to fly. Handsome, godly Charles Beachey is immediately drawn to Lizzie's older sister, Jane, who is as lovely on the inside as she is on the outside. His cousin, George Wickey, is dashing, mysterious, and full of charm, and Lizzie's first impressions of Frederick are not favorable at all. She finds him puffed up with pride, prejudice, and arrogance — and overhears him telling Charles that she is just "tolerable." When Charles returns to Ohio leaving Jane heartbroken, Lizzie deems the insufferable Frederick responsible, and neither does she understand the distasteful attitude he takes towards the charming, handsome George Wickey. As Lizzie seeks to draw closer to God, will she realize that first impressions aren't always as they seem…but are they destined to be lasting impressions?

Although this novel is an Amish contemporary, I just loved the old fashioned Jane Austen-ish feel to it! I could actually envision the characters from the movie, Pride and Prejudice, in my mind's eye (especially Mr. Darcy, er, uh, Frederick that is)…so accurately were they portrayed by the author…and I fell in love with every one of them! Except for…well, I best not say! Sarah Price is extremely talented, and I highly applaud her for this wonderful book that made me laugh, smile, cry, and think about how easily we prejudge people based on appearances or what someone else has told us about them. This is easily one of the best novels I have read this year, and one of my fave Amish books ever!

Marian Baay reviews GETTYSBURG'S CHOSEN SONS by Sarah Price

Gettysburg's Chosen Sons

~5 stars~*****

Two Amish brothers wanting to fight in the war – but only one can go. Two Bibles – but only one with a white piece of paper in it. The brother who chooses the Bible with the piece of paper shall go to war.

Thomas is the one with the piece of paper in his Bible. He’s the younger of the two brothers. At eighteen, he is not only leaving his family but also his girlfriend. He makes his older brother promise to take care of her and – if he does not return – to marry her.

The next morning, Abram must tell Father that Thomas left to fight in the war. Shortly thereafter he must also tell the same news to Betsy—Thomas’ girlfriend.
The days that follow are filled with hope to hear something from Thomas, but no word comes. Then finally Abram decides to go to Gettysburg—where the battle took place—and bring Thomas home.

Will Abram find his brother? Or is he bound by his promise to marry Betsy?

A well-written, moving story that brought tears to my eyes. My only complaint is that it was so short—but although it was short it was still a satisfying read!
