Teresa S. Mathews Reviews "BEHIND THE SCENES" by Jen Turano

Review by Teresa S. Mathews
5 Stars*****

Once again Jen Turano has penned a tale guaranteed to entertain and delight and I will go so far as to say, tickle your funny bone. This is book one in a new series titled Apart From the Crowd and it was filled with many interesting characters of whom are a part of New York's High Society. Our lovely main character Permilia Griswold had her debut later in life than most young ladies and the only place there seemed to be for her was with the wallflowers, and so the fun begins!

Wallflower,” most young ladies born into wealth would rue being called that but not strong-willed, independent Permilia. In fact it fit her purposes quite well, no one would ever think she was taking notes at all the balls and publishing them in the local paper under the pen-name Miss Quill. So, Permilia trying her best not to be noticed while taking notes, sees a terrible accident in the making, rushes to help and being the epitome of her usual gracefulness, is almost flattened by a falling object until she is rescued by Asher Rutherford.

Asher Rutherford, a well standing member of society despite being the owner of a department store. Most of his influential peers think it odd that a man of his family's wealth would stoop to running a business, thankfully no one knows the real reason and he would like to keep it that way. As Asher is making his way through the crowd at the latest ball his attention is caught by none other than the feisty, beautiful but somewhat awkward Permilia Griswold. That was the beginning of an interesting evening filled with all types of adventure, intrigue, and even an overheard murder plot. And if you were to believe the report published in the paper the next morning, Permilia and Asher were the talk of the ball, but not necessarily in a good way!

If you haven't read one of Jen's books yet, let me encourage you to do so. From start to finish you will be thoroughly engrossed with her lively characters and their even livelier antics, and I promise you will find yourself laughing out loud on more than one occassion! I always finish up Jen's books feeling like I was a part of a grand adventure!

A Lady Unrivaled

Ushering the charming and picturesque Cotswolds of England into the mind’s eye, Roseanna M. White pens yet another exquisite masterpiece of Edwardian romance and suspense with the backdrop of England’s beautiful countryside. Rivalling the allure of the scenic landscapes are characters so enchanting and genuine, you can’t help but wish you knew them personally.

Tenacious and kind-hearted, Lady Ella Myerston determines to liberate her loved ones from the supposed curse of the Fire Eyes—the priceless red diamonds that have brought nothing but trauma and tragedy into their lives in the past. But even as she schemes to seize the diamonds to draw the danger away from her family and the Duke and Duchess of Stafford with whom she’s visiting, plans are set in motion by evil in the form of a wealthy Russian to seize the jewels.

Stafford’s cousin, the widowed Lord Cayton, has no choice but to go along with a ploy to acquire the Fire Eyes when his precious infant daughter and the beautiful, carefree Lady Ella are threatened. Unfortunately for him, this plan involves him courting Ella as a means to get the diamonds. Cayton is captivated with Ella but believes he’d only bring her heartache, so he must guard his heart. However, while this relationship is meant to keep everyone safe, they each wonder which amorous moments shared are genuine and which are purely for the sake of performance. And when Ella becomes a target of the enemy’s affection along with the diamonds, can Cayton possibly save both?

A Lady Unrivaled is a sublime, gratifying conclusion to an extraordinary series! Silent spies, ominous threats, and hair-raising suspense rival a romance that rips with sparks, chemistry, and brilliant wit showcased in dialogue that leaves you greedy for more. Opposites in personality, Ella and Cayton regularly bounce off each other with entertaining banter—like the recurring argument about the true color of her hair. I adored the fun, impetuous, and optimistic Ella, who frequently tries to goad Cayton to be more cheerful. Even with the laughs that this tale inspires, there’s also a poignant thread on grief that’s beautifully encouraging. This is a favorite of mine this year!

*Although this can be read as a stand-alone book, I would recommend reading the first two highly-acclaimed books 'The Lost Heiress' and 'The Reluctant Duchess' for a greater understanding and appreciation of all the wonderful characters in this series.*

A Heart Most Certain (Teaville Moral Society Book #1)

Reviewed by Noela Nancarrow
5 Stars *****

A Heart Most Certain’ is a richly rewarding story that will deeply challenge you, inspire you, bless you, and make you late for absolutely everything until you reach the last page. Of that, I am most certain!

Lydia King’s heart is in the right place. She faithfully goes to church and is a part of the Moral Society ladies group who protest against prostitutes and raise money for different church projects. When Lydia is challenged by the society’s president Mrs. Little, to garner a donation from the town’s wealthy miser Nicholas Lowe, she determines to succeed where others have failed. Lydia feels she must impress Mrs Little if she is to have a chance to marry her son, the politician. Securing marriage to the well-off Sebastian Little would ensure she wouldn’t end up in the poor house and that her ailing mother will be taken care of.

When Nicholas is pestered by Lydia for a donation and won’t take no for an answer, he proposes a bargain she can’t refuse. Their pact has more than a few surprises in store for Lydia as she is challenged in everything she has ever believed in. She will be tested spiritually, ethically, and emotionally. Nicholas, a man of many layers and secrets, sought to show Lydia a thing or two, but learns a few things himself when his whole life turns upside down along with Lydia’s.

Often we need to take the time to look below the surface and not take everything we see and hear at face value. These wonderfully genuine characters discover this for themselves through their experiences—sometimes to their delight, and other times to their sorrow. The wealth of spiritual encouragement within the novel includes motivating messages of ‘Who else will do it if you and I don’t?’, choosing God’s favor over man, and enlightening illustrations of hypocrisy. Infused with a double helping of romance, drama, and humor, I give ‘A Heart Most Certain’ a most emphatic ‘Highly Recommended’!!

No Other Will Do
No Other Will Do (Ladies of Harper’s Station, Book #1)
Bethany House Publishers (June 7, 2016)

A dynamite adventure and romance!

Karen Witemeyer is one of my ‘constant’ authors... Which means I unfailingly enjoy every book of Karen's—so they are always confidently anticipated! Sometimes even with a little drool. But ‘No Other Will Do’, wasn’t as constant. It easily exceeded any lofty expectations I already had!

The unequivocally selfless and compassionate Emma Chandler, has established a colony for struggling and abused women at Harper’s Station in Baylor County, Texas. These women were resourceful and intelligent, and got along just dandy without men. That is, until some threats against them began to get a whole lot more threatening. Emma knew only one man she could trust to come to their rescue.

Ten years ago, Malachi Shaw was rescued by a young angel named Emma when he was an orphaned, freezing, and hungry, homeless kid. Emma and her Aunts gave him a second chance at life and a future. He’s now a successful explosives expert for the railroad, but upon receiving a cry for help from his angel in a telegram, Malachi has no hesitation in dropping everything (not the explosives!) and races to save Emma from whatever trouble she’s found herself in. This ‘trouble’, however, soon escalates and the women must choose whether to stay and fight alongside of him or flee to safety. Malachi’s life isn’t the only thing at stake. The angel that has always held a piece of his heart—is now snagging the rest. Unfortunately, they both have very different lives and purposes. But will any other do for them? And can Malachi be his angel’s savior or will everything blow up in his face?

Author Karen Witemeyer has a cracker of a wit which pretty much guarantees, and delivers, outbursts of laughter in ‘No Other Will Do’.  As for the romantic tension, forget about the characters being breathless… I was the one holding my breath! Expect also to be buoyed spiritually while reflecting upon God’s promises in helping to defeat our enemies—and the knowledge that we are not alone with our burdens. Highly recommended!!

Noela reviews HER ONE AND ONLY by Becky Wade

Her One and Only
Bethany House Publishers (April 26, 2016)

5 Stars *****

Ingenious, intriguing, and absolutely irresistible! Becky Wade, surely the Queen of Contemporary romance, delivers a tale that generates sparks on every page within ‘Her One and Only!’ A romance that sizzles, a foreboding mystery that baffles, and a powerful and emotive theme of trusting God—all barely even begin to reveal what an enjoyable tale that the ‘one and only’ author Becky Wade has created.

When the Mustang’s popular football star Gray Fowler continues to receive escalating threats from an unknown source, he is assigned an around the clock security team. The brawny, macho, chauvinistic player scoffs at one of his protection agents—a lithe, attractive woman named Dru. But the former marine who’s also a black belt, surprises him by her determination and persistent immunity to his charms. Gray is drawn to this leather-clad ‘super-hero’ but because of his tormented childhood and his parent’s dismal example, he’s sworn off love and commitment. On the other side of things, feisty and confident Dru has a career-tarnished reputation and is fiercely determined to prove herself on the job. And that means no matter how alluring this big football guy is, she will keep everything strictly business. Plus, she has a client she needs to keep alive from a deadly stalker. Can she achieve both?

The electrifying chemistry between Gray and Dru is testimony to the strength of their personalities. Author Becky Wade has nailed it by creating two intricate and flawed characters that connected perfectly—even while irritating each other! It was pure delight watching Dru and Gray’s resistance to each other crack, and witnessing how they bounced off one another with their combined wit. Behind my smiles, however, hovered an edgy uncertainty surrounding the identity of the stalker. The mystery of the anonymous assailant kept me guessing and in suspense constantly. Complimenting the romance and suspense is a touching, inspirational thread on the heartbreaking struggle and anguish of infertility and miscarriage. And of the very real difficulties to trust God fully for life, for love, and for courage. Highly recommended!

Exquisitely enthralling and enchanting

Och, what a tale! In 'The Reluctant Duchess', I was whisked away to the rugged Scottish Highlands to dip my toes in the chilling Loch and in the heartbreaking and frightening plight of a dispirited young woman. Mercifully though, a visiting English Duke comes to the terrified lassie’s rescue by marrying her. However, she feels anything but safe—either from this hero with a flirtatious reputation, her tragic past, or her uncertain future.

Lady Rowena Kinnaird, daughter of the barbaric chief of the clan Kinnaird, suddenly finds herself married into England’s high society after having no choice but to marry the Duke of Nottingham for freedom from a fate worse than death. As much as she desperately needed to escape Loch Morar and the wretched man who attacked her in the worst way, the scarred and fragile Rowena will tug at your heart as her fears cause her to feel frightened of her husband—a tender-hearted man who spends hours on his knees for his new wife. Wounded in heart and body, I ached for Rowena’s feelings of despair and worthlessness. The author writes so beautifully poignant, you cannae help the tears!

When God impressed upon Brice Myerston, The Duke of Nottingham, to protect Rowena by wedding her, he could do no less. But back in England and with his wife being so stressed already, Brice keeps hidden the fact he plans to try and flush out the treacherous villains seeking the rare jewels that are now in his possession. Is he about to place his traumatized wife in further danger? Will Brice be able to protect both the jewels and Rowena from treachery all around? And will his broken wife ever trust again?

Author Roseanna White has breathed so much depth and heart into the personalities of ‘The Reluctant Duchess’, although the Duke was a standout for me. He's a hero in every sense of the word; rescuing the lady in more than one way. Brice is utterly charming, powerfully gentle, and possessing extraordinary patience and insight! Did I mention he also had a sense of humor—that surfaces in even the most trying of times? Roseanna White’s writing was as usual, perfectly exquisite. The history, accents, and suspenseful unpredictability are enthralling. I could read this again and again! Aye, this book comes highly recommended!

Diana's Review Of A Worthy Heart By Susan Anne Mason

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

Susan Anne Mason has penned a mesmerizing, impassioned Irish American saga of two families whose lives intertwine at the lovely and affluent estate—the O'Leary stables, Irish Meadows, in 1914 Long Island, New York.

Maggie Montgomery's dreams of coming to America and starting a new life are finally coming to fruition. She has escaped the unwanted advances of Neill Fitzgerald and has no plans of ever returning to the lush, verdant meadows of Ireland. Once in New York she is reunited with Rylan Montgomery, her beloved brother and his wife, the former Colleen O'Leary of Irish Meadows estate. While visiting Irish Meadows she meets Colleen's brother, Adam—handsome and intriguing, but totally off limits.

Adam O'Leary has recently been released from prison and though ostracized from his family, Maggie is inexorably drawn to him. Adam's main desire of heart is to earn back his family's trust, and the lovely Irish Maggie who was not a part of his plans quickly becomes a priority as well. However, their tight-knit bond begins to unravel as Adam stumbles upon a terrible family secret that threatens to completely destroy his already low self-esteem—and neither he nor Maggie realize their undeniable attraction to one another may cause unfathomable danger to themselves...and those they love.

Author Susan Anne Mason has quickly become one of my favorite new authors—beginning with her amazing debut novel Irish Meadows and totally enrapturing me with A Worthy Heart! With a smidgen of suspense, two toe curling, angst-filled romances in the O'Leary/Montgomery family for the price of one (sighhh...)—and memorable characters who will wrap themselves around your heart and not let go—this is a definite must read! Although not a requirement as this book does well as a stand alone, I highly recommend reading Irish Meadows first to become better acquainted with each fascinating character. A Worthy Heart is a fast-paced, exciting novel with never a dull moment, interspersed with a strong theme of forgiveness and redemption throughout. Be sure to order your copy today!

A thrilling turn of the century tale of mystery and romance!

How have I not read anything by this author yet?!! I was utterly swept away by this entrancing Edwardian-period tale that unfurls into one of the most intriguing mysteries I’ve ever read! Merged with an enchanting albeit heart-wrenching love story, ‘The Lost Heiress’ enthralls from the beginning to the satisfying end!

The beautiful and carefree Brook Eden is stunned to learn through her long-standing friend Justin Wildon that she is a long-lost Baroness. And so we follow Brook’s journey from the bright and warm Mediterranean atmosphere where she was raised in the palace of Monaco, to the purple-sprigged countryside and dreary weather of England. How will this impulsive and spirited personality fit into her new role as the Earl of Whitby’s daughter and missing heiress? Will she be accepted by her father and his staff when so many before have tried to pass themselves off as the Earl’s long lost daughter? The anxious Brook leans on Justin, her anchor in this new land, and who has traveled to his home country along with Brook to be her mainstay. Numerous questions lay yet unanswered as to why Brook was separated from her family in the first place. When mysteries deepen and danger escalates, Brook needs answers but longs for peace.

Justin, a future Duke himself, has come to realize that his deep affection for Brook goes beyond friendship and longs to court her but cannot while she is only just discovering her true identity. But even so, Brook seemingly only thinks of him as an adored brother. As Brook struggles to adjust to her new life, Justin’s own pressing responsibilities grow. With too much time apart, trouble brewing, and intense emotions surfacing between them, Justin and Brook’s charming, easy-banter relationship becomes tempestuous and unpredictable, whilst simmering in unspoken feelings. This thrilling novel is rife with clandestine meetings, ominous threats, grave deception, and murder. Our two heroes will learn that God moves even in the darkness to accomplish His will.

The varied and vibrant characters all left their mark on me, as did the exquisite and irresistible romance, making this a story one longs to return to. Roseanna M. White has eloquently crafted a tantalizing and riveting novel, and it is my pleasure to highly recommend it to all!

Double The Romance!

In this mesmerizing Irish family saga, author Susan Anne Mason sweeps the reader away to a lovely and affluent estate—the O'Leary stables in 1911 Long Island, New York. After three long years, Gil Whelan is glad to be back home again. He had come to Irish Meadows as a small child where he had been taken in by the O'Leary family and treated as the patriarch's own son. Now he has come back to repay the debt and start his own farm.

Two beautiful O'Leary sisters as different as night and day; the coquettish and manipulative Colleen, and sweet, green-eyed Brianna must marry well to help save their father, James O'Leary's opulent horse farm. When Rylan Montgomery, a handsome, charming young priest arrives at Irish Meadows as well—a journey of angst-filled, entangling romance begins, throwing a wrench into James' plans to save his farm. Will Brianna, Colleen, and even Gil all become as puppets dancing to Papa O'Leary's tune or will their own plans and matters of the heart take over? And will Colleen ever mend her scheming, conniving ways?

I am definitely a new fan of Susan Anne Mason's amazing writing! I was pleasantly surprised at her ability to tell a story with exciting plot twists and complicated, seemingly impossible romantic situations interspersed with humor and heartaches by the number! The realistic characters are not sugar coated and struggle with a distorted sense of loyalty and obligation to Mr. O'Leary, trust issues, and childhood trauma resulting in shame and a lack of self-esteem. However, each must painstakingly work their way through these presumably insurmountable issues and ooh, the drama that ensues! An enchanting tale with two romances for the price of one (!) and a beautiful story of God's redemption and inner healing...Irish Meadows is definitely one not to be missed! I absolutely loved it!

Pursuing trust, faith, and love..

Being able to trust others is necessary in life but it can also be a particularly difficult endeavor when there has been past hurts. Throughout this romantic western adventure in 1891, the issues of trust and the lack thereof are deftly interwoven throughout the pages of an inspiring and irresistible love story!

Stone Hammond is a bounty hunter turned retriever who has seen it all, and none of it was pleasant. When he is paid to retrieve a young girl by the name of Lily from a seemingly stiff-backed schoolmarm kidnapper, he encounters a beautiful, caring woman who doesn’t fit the usual profile of an abductor. But appearances can be deceiving, so Stone resists trusting this enigma of a woman who seems to actually cherish the child. He intends to get his questions answered but first he needs to earn her trust.

Former headmistress at an academy for gifted children, Charlotte Atherton determines to keep Lily and two other young charges safe after the school was unexpectedly shut down. Charlotte had pledged to Lily’s now deceased mother she’d keep the girl safe from Lily’s grandfather, but when the imposing and muscle-bound Stone Hammond finds them; will she be able to keep that promise? When others begin to also come after Lily, Charlotte will have to decide if she can trust Stone. And when he begins to pursue her heart, can the barrier of distrust she has for men crumble enough for Charlotte to find happiness, love, and a heart that can trust again?

‘A Worthy Pursuit’ is intriguing, engaging, and will hold you captive within the story like a trussed up bounty hunter’s prisoner! There’s plenty of adventure that’s set at a lively pace, and humor to keep you smiling throughout. The character pairing of the heroes is sigh-worthy perfect, with loads of chemistry, witty dialogue, and personality. Other delightful characters are as equally compelling. Highly recommended and extremely enjoyable!

Riding towards Love, Hope, and Faith

The widespread expanse of the Whispering Creek Ranch accommodates panoramic views stretching across low green hills, a striking lodge-style mansion, white-fenced paddocks and pastures with magnificent horses, grand barns, and a top of the line training track. Sadly, the beauty of this vista belies the solitude and suffering of the ranch’s horse-trainer Jake Porter.

Jake wrestles with PTSD from his time serving in Iraq. Feeling broken in too many ways, he has since lived a mostly isolated life training Thoroughbred racing horses for his brother, never allowing anyone to get close. When his close childhood friend Lyndie returns to Holley, Texas, he strives to keep those barriers erected around him. But Lyndie, never losing the fearless spirit she once possessed as a child, begins to slowly break through his rigid barricades. As much as Jake longs to allow this vibrant and exquisite girl fully into his life, he believes he must keep her safe - on the race track and from himself.

Small in stature though big in personality, the determined Lyndie has managed to obtain a job exercising Jake’s racing horses, and believes that she and her severely disabled sister Mollie can bring about healing to both Jake and his promising stallion Silver Leaf. Now grown up, Lyndie finds herself once again alongside Jake, only now so much has changed. Muscled, lean, and devastatingly handsome despite the scar on his face, Jake’s quiet composure has survived but his tortured eyes beneath the Stetson guards a deeply scarred man. His limited and brusque words silently proclaim his pain. Initially only wanting to help mend him, Lyndie now finds herself falling for this tall, dark, and brooding man. Can Lyndie bring healing, or will her heart become as shattered as his psyche?

Author Becky Wade has sublimely harmonized ‘A Love like Ours’ to impart the heart-rending angst of Jake’s PTSD whilst also delivering a breathlessly intense romance and the perfect measure of humor throughout. The standout for me though, was the convincing portrayal of PTSD in Jake. The chills that passed through him were so tangible I literally felt them race through me also. The characters are written with such gripping sensitivity, the romance so tender yet so passionate, and their faith journeys so inspiring, it is easy to Highly Recommend this book!

If you enjoy being entertained by what you read, I’d look no further! Replete with uproariously funny scenes, sparkling dialogue embracing brilliant wit and rich sarcasm, and delightfully quirky characters--- this energized and fast-paced novel with its animated mayhem will have you racing through the pages to the surprising but perfect ending!

It all began when hat-maker Harriet Peabody was sent by her employer to deliver some hats to an unpredictable and might I say, somewhat maniacal society woman. After subsequently losing her job, Harriet realizes her dreams of opening her own store selling refashioned gowns to working-class women, are pushed further away than ever. Unless, she accepts the daunting job that the ridiculously wealthy Mr. Oliver Addleshaw has offered her.

When Oliver meets the fetching Harriet, he is impressed with her self-sufficiency and unflappable nature and deems her the perfect woman to have at his side when entertaining the Duke while negotiating an important business deal. Relieved that Harriet won’t press him into marriage like most society ladies would, it was the perfect solution. Thinking a bit of training in the rules of society would suffice; Oliver had no idea how much this charming woman would be like a fish out water! Nor was he prepared for this stubborn and intriguing woman to get under his skin so much. Or to have chased her around the streets so many times! But this is only a business arrangement and they are worlds apart... or are they?

I was enamored with the burgeoning romance that the characters tried to ignore, the well-executed plot climaxing with a deadly threat from Harriet’s past, along with more pandemonium of course, and the laughs that never stopped coming!! Complementing that were the unique and colorful characters which included the irrational Miss Birmingham, the dictionary-challenged friend, the slobbering Buford, and the kindly reverend. With a feel of the movie Pretty Woman about it, this spectacular tale is not only incredibly entertaining but spiritually uplifting as it perfectly portrays the value in us all.

Teresa S. Mathews Reviews Jen Turano's After a Fashion

After a Fashion
A Class of Their Own Book 1
By Jen Turano

5 Stars*****

Once again Jen Turano has created a tale that promises to satisfy your yearning for an exciting, engaging read. You might even be like me and find yourself laughing aloud at her dear characters antics. I promise even if you do not possess a sense of humor you will find this book quite delightful!

For the past six years Miss Harriet Peabody, an industrious hat clerk has asked God to send her something wonderful for her birthday. Most of those years she was granted her request; now if only the one from last year would show up. Is it too much for a lady to ask for a kind gentleman to call her own?

Oliver Addleshaw is quite the eligible bachelor; handsome, smart, extremely rich and ever seeking a way to be more successful. When he learns his latest business venture would go more smoothly if he has a lovely young lady at his side, Oliver sets out to find one. When his first choice for one turns out to be a spoiled, raving lunatic, Oliver has to move fast to find another. This is where the fun begins!

When Harriet’s boss asks her to deliver some hats to a Miss Birmingham, Oliver Addleshaw’s supposed fiancé; she reluctantly obeys, never knowing the calamity she is headed straight into! When arriving at the impressive mansion, Harriet is met with a very angry young lady, who is parading around the grounds, screaming and waving an umbrella. It seems Miss Birmingham and Mr. Addleshaw have had a grave misunderstanding; she believes he is on the verge of proposing marriage, he is very sure he is not!

When Oliver witnesses the bravery with which the hat clerk confronts the outraged Miss Birmingham, he is intrigued with her. Then an idea forms; perhaps she is the one that could help him pull off this mock engagement. He would be willing to pay her well for her time. Could this be the answer to Harriet‘s birthday prayer?

To say that I enjoyed this book would be a huge understatement. Ms. Turano’s writing is so refreshing and uplifting that her vibrant characters seem to come to life right before your eyes! I have read all of her books and I have yet to be disappointed with any of them. This one was especially exciting to me, as there was an additional plot twist that I did not see coming; absolutely ingenious!!

Noela Nancarrow reviews LOVE UNEXPECTED by Jody Hedlund

Love Unexpected (Beacons of Hope, Book One)
Bethany House Publishers (November 25, 2014)

5 Stars *****

Love Unexpected’ is an enchanting historical romance that unfolds on Presque Isle, Michigan in 1859, shining a light upon the rich history of the Presque Isle Lighthouse and the woman who became a Keeper there. It’s also a captivating tale of pirates and shipwrecks, the community of a small fishing village, and finding unexpected love and hope amidst tragedy and hopelessness.

When Emma Chambers and her brother are stranded on Presque Isle, Emma finds herself penniless and homeless. A traveling preacher who has just helped the local light-keeper Patrick to bury his wife, brings the two together as the solution to the now-widowed father of a small boy, and the destitute Emma. Inexperienced Emma is suddenly mother to a strong-willed child given to tantrums, as well as a wife with no domestic skills to an imposing albeit kind man. All she had ever really wanted was to have a home and family of her own, but as Emma begins to listen to gossip and dire warnings, along with her own suspicions mounting, it seems like her life might once again become capsized.

I was extremely impressed at how deftly the author was able to express the frustrations and other emotions of the characters. Their fears, doubts, and longing for love and acceptance squeezed and tugged at my heart. Sublimely written, the very soul of the relationship between Emma and Patrick was tender yet intense, and dripping with romantic tension. And incorporated in ‘Love Unexpected’ was possibly the finest illustration and enlightenment on the pitfalls of gossip that I’ve ever read, illuminating a snare that has damaged or sunk many a relationship. ‘Love Unexpected’ is a beautiful and intriguing story that captures the reader right from the exciting onset!

Diana Flowers Reviews Love Unexpected by Jody Hedlund

Love Unexpected

Reviewed by Diana Flowers
(No Spoilers!)
Intrigue and Romance!
In Love Unexpected, author Jody Hedlund sweeps us away to Presque Isle, Michigan -- a remote fishing village where a lighthouse is strategically placed along the craggy shoreline to warn fishermen of imminent danger, the smell of pine trees and salty fish assault the readers' senses, and dangerous pirates lurk in the cold, murky, turbulent waters of Lake Huron!

When Emma and her brother, Ryan, are left for dead in their fishing boat by vicious pirates, Patrick Garrity comes to their rescue. Patrick is the widowed father of a toddler and the lighthouse keeper in a remote fishing village. Ryan is taken in by a family who does not want Emma, so she accepts the most practical solution available. Patrick needs a mother for Josiah, and Emma who longs to finally have a home of her own, enters into a marriage of convenience with this seemingly God-fearing man. It is not long, however, before she begins to have dreadful misgivings. Although Emma dearly loves Josiah he is given to terrible temper tantrums, she has no domestic skills, and to make matters worse Patrick carries deep secrets involving his past. Soon Emma begins to wonder if this man she is falling for is all that he appears to be. As the gossip swirls around her as thick and dark as the turbid waters of Lake Huron, will she sink once again -- this time with no beacon of hope to light her way?

Jody Hedlund has written a wonderfully descriptive, fiction-based-on-fact story about lighthouses, breathtaking romance, and.....pirates? Yes, indeed! Pirates on Lake Huron is something I was not aware of and totally intensified my interest in this book...as did my love of towering, majestic lighthouses. I really enjoyed the main characters (thumb sucking Josiah was adorable in spite of his temper), but poor Emma was so naïve I wanted to shake her and give her a big hug at the same time. The angst and romantic tension is so palatable it'll leave your heart racing erratically...ahhh, such exquisite torture. Along with plenty of descriptive imagery, a strong message of hope and forgiveness, and a few gnarly pirates thrown in the mix!...this novel makes for a very satisfying read!

This book may be purchased through Amazon, CBD, and your local bookstore.
