Character interview of Brooke Hollen of Desolate Paths by Erin Unger

Hi everyone! Brooke Hollen here! I’m the star of Desolate Paths. Thanks so much for having me today, Carrie! I’m excited to talk to you.

Hello, Brooke. Tell us about yourself. How did you get into Erin Unger’s novel?
Ha-ha, funny story—well really a scary one—I got into trouble and the best help I could get was in rehab. But, man, I didn’t expect all the drama there. And I should’ve read the website closer. I didn’t know what I was in for when I arrived. Erin knew I’d make some interesting choices and liven up her story once I got to the rehab center.

Why did you choose Carrick Living Museum and Rehabilitation Center to help you through your addiction?
I saw the promise of authentic help and rest and relaxation. I didn’t read all of the details because all I wanted was to rest my way through rehab. Little did I know relaxation only happened the first few days. I should’ve picked up on all the pictures of people wearing period clothing on the website. Authentic is an understatement about Carrick rehab. But God knew exactly where I needed to be.

Oh, dear. What’s different about the center?
It’s a center where all residents work throughout their rehab. Cory and Dara Carrick believe in the importance of learning how to be a valuable member of society while rehabilitating. All residents have to wear period clothing and must do all chores and cooking the way people would’ve in the early 1800s.

What’s so scary about your stay at the center?
Who would’ve guessed I’d be in danger at the center when it’s supposed to be a safe environment? There is a serial killer living amongst us.

Oh, that’s terrible. How are you handling it?
I’m trying to stay out of trouble and rely on my new faith, but I’m really scared. Kyle Reston, the person I want to trust, could be responsible for all the women disappearing.

Maybe you should rethink hanging out with him. Do you have anyone else you can trust?
I have a new friend, Willa, who has been trying to keep me straight. She’s a lot further in her journey to recovery. Hopefully, together we’ll make it out of the center alive.

Well, I hope you stay safe. Thanks for talking to us.
With God, all things are possible. And because of my new faith, I’ll rely on Him to get me through this dangerous time. It was fun talking to you, Carrie.

Brooke is putting her trust in God through a very difficult time. What circumstance have you been in this year where you could only rely on God for the answer? Comment below to win an eBook of Desolate Paths or a paperback of Desolate Paths.

Thank you to Erin Unger

Short Bio: Erin Unger was raised in the hills of Virginia, exploring abandoned houses and reading the scariest books she could find. After marrying so young it would make a great romance novel, she has enjoyed an exciting life with her hubby. But her fast-paced life sometimes rivals the suspense in her books thanks to all her mostly grown children and a couple grandkids.

Audiobook Review of From This Moment by Elizabeth Camden

Another Hit From Elizabeth Camden!
Five Stars *****
By Carrie Fancett Pagels

This turn of the century historical suspense and romance is another stellar example of Elizabeth Camden's skill as a story teller who pulls you in and keeps you in the story to the end!  The dandy Romulus White is one of the owners of Scientific World. For years, he's hoped to have Stella West, the famous lithograph artist, contribute to his magazine.  His partner at the journal, his cousin, Evelyn, has been estranged from her engineer husband for years. He reappears on the scene to help with the building of Boston's new subway

When Stella returns from London, to investigate her sister's suspicious death, she and Romulus soon becoming entangled in a testy relationship that pits her needs against his. Danger seems to lurk everywhere.

The narrator was not the best, but she was ok. Her male voices were cringe-worthy at times. But Elizabeth's story shines and expert characterization overcomes the performance.

I have an audible.com membership and downloaded the book.

Highly Recommend!!! From This Moment is a book you will love!

Giveaway: Paperback copy of the book. Leave a comment about why you love late 18th century books!

Kelli Hughett Interview by Carrie Fancett Pagels

Author Kelli Hughett
Kelli, welcome to Overcoming With God. We appreciate your willingness to share your testimony of overcoming with our readers. I sure enjoyed meeting you at ACFW conference a few years back and sharing a dinner table with you!

Would you tell us about the most difficult thing in your life you have had to overcome, with God’s help? Answer: Three years ago, I was seriously injured in a car crash. To date, I've had two spinal fusions and countless therapies and procedures. At the time, I had nine year old, a six year old, and a three year old.
I’d always been an active person. I enjoyed lifting weights, playing sports, and especially hiking and camping with my family. I think the hardest thing was teaching my kids to crawl into my lap, instead of picking them up. They missed the cuddling. They missed the mom-that-used-to-be.
But God knew what a struggle I would be facing, and in the moment before the other car hit us, I heard His voice. “Everything is going to be okay.” Simple statement. Big results. In the months and years that have followed, I have relied on that perfect promise. No matter the pain, the fear, or the unknown, it’s true. Everything is going to be okay. God has already overcome for me through Christ.
What passages in the Bible have been most helpful to you in those times?
Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
I can overcome anything because of this promise.
Disability friendliness: Is this latest release available in audio format or do you have any other works available on audio? Do your e-books have audio capability? Do you have any in large print?
Not at this time, but Red Zone is in the process of being produced in an audio format.
Red Zone by Kelli Hughett

In this latest work, do you have any topics useful for bibliotherapy, or therapeutic influence through reading about a disorder or situation?
One book that influenced the character development of Marcy in Red Zone is, Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge. In my experience, most women have struggled with overcoming their belief that they aren’t truly beautiful. Captivating changed my own beliefs in my true beauty in Christ.
Question you’d like to ask readers:
What is your favorite part of romantic suspense? The romance or the suspense?

Author bio:
"To fall in Love with God is the greatest Romance; To seek him, the greatest adventure; To find him, the greatest achievement." Augustine
I don't spend my days writing, but I squeeze it in where I can. From my office window, I see barns, the Rocky Mountains, yards of farm fence and wide swathes of green grass surrounded by trees that are just starting to turn this fall. You'd imagine me writing Amish or Prairie Romance, right?!
Many people who know me well have asked me why I chose to write suspense. It is a little out-of-character for me, I suppose. I collect tea cups, read Austen and classics regularly, wear frilly dresses and dote on agricultural landscapes. My favorite book is Anne of Green Gables. So, why suspense?
I guess it taps an unseen part of my personality. What's more exciting than a murder mystery? Suspense is the spice of life, even if we aren't standing over dead bodies all day. It enhances marriages, gives authority to news and announcements, and makes our hearts beat fast. No book, no matter the genre, would be interesting without a little suspense!
And what story is complete without romance?
I hope you'll find my books entertaining without offending your soul. I hope you'll discover the magic of ordinary days and characters in extraordinary circumstances. Maybe you'll find yourself in one of my books. I know you'll find little pieces of me. Diana's Review of Seagrass Pier by Colleen Coble

Seagrass Pier

Heart-Racing Seaside Suspense!

In Seagrass Pier, Colleen Coble has penned a heart pounding, suspense-filled novel in the lovely, seaside setting of the quaint little island of Hope Beach, North Carolina. Hope Beach is a veritable vacationer's paradise; with its white sandy beaches, roar of the surf, the fresh salty scent of the sea air, and the moon glimmering on the peaks of the whitecaps—but underneath the guise of warmth and beauty lie deadly secrets,  deceit, and murder.

Elin Summerall has been given another chance at life. A young woman named Laura has been murdered and Elin has received her heart in a transplant, along with some of Laura's memories, habits, and violent flashbacks of her murder. Elin, a widow, moves to Seagrass Pier with her mother and her little girl, Josie, to try and recapture some peace and also learn more about her donor in the process.

When Elin begins to receive threatening letters, phone calls, and visits from a stalker who seems to want her dead, a handsome FBI agent from her past, Marc Everton, reappears in her life to help. Marc has more than a vested interest in her and Josie's lives due to a secret Elin has kept from him for almost five years. Can Marc and Elin, along with Laura's memories, put the pieces together before she becomes another of this madman's victims?

Colleen Coble is a master story-teller whose suspense books are guaranteed to keep readers on the edge of their seats, with an adrenaline rush from beginning to end! She is an expert at descriptive imagery, and I could actually see the pounding surf and hear the cry of the seagulls in my mind's eye. There was not just one romance in this novel, but two! – as one of the secondary character's story comes to life as well, and the romantic tension was extremely palatable! There was a surprise twist at the end that threw me for a loop, and lovers of whodunits will be mesmerized; biting their nails well into the night trying to figure out who this crazy stalker is! Nicely done, Ms. Colleen Coble!
