Diana Flowers Reviews 'Annie's Christmas Wish' By Barbara Cameron

Annie's Christmas Wish

(No Spoilers!)

It's Christmas Time In The City...

In Annie's Christmas Wish, the reader visualizes the bustling city of New York through a vacationing Amish family's eyes...the diverse shops and restaurants, beautifully lit holiday decor, the Rockefeller Center skating rink, the Empire State Building, and plenty of glistening snow!

Ever since Annie was a child and received a snow globe of New York City from her stepmother, Jenny, she has dreamed of going there. Annie is filled with a vivid imagination and dreams of being a writer like her step-mom and wishes to visit the New York Times building. Jenny is to receive a prestigious award for her writing and the whole family goes with her to New York, accompanied by Annie's boyfriend, Aaron. Awed by the sights and sounds of a magical Christmas in New York, Annie's excitement is marred only by the fact that her father and Aaron are afraid she will stay in the city and no longer be content to live in her Amish community of Paradise. And then Annie receives two tempting offers that could forever change her destiny...which one will she accept?

Barbara Cameron is such a great storyteller that although I have never been to New York, I feel as though I have just visited there! Her descriptive imagery will finely tune all of your five senses and some tough issues such as a homeless, pregnant teenager, and the plight of the homeless in rescue missions were touched on--all with compassion and finesse. I feel as though her portrayal of the Amish was very realistic (although this sect didn't seem to be as strict as some) and her characters very endearing. So put another log on the fire, grab a cup of hot chocolate...and snuggle up with this magical, heartwarming holiday novel! It's Christmas time in the city!

  1. I haven't read any of Barbara Cameron's books yet, but this looks like a good one to pick up and read to get me in the mood for the Christmas season. I enjoy Amish fiction and will add this to my list of books to read.

  7. This was one fabulous book!!! I thoroughly enjoyed it! It's just a very relaxing book to read. If you love Amish books this is a great one! Annie, a plain person, spends a vacation with her family in the big booming town of New York city with all their shiny lights, stores, restaurants etc. She's had a dream for years of becoming a writer but how does she handle it in the plain community? Will she stay in New York? Will she return to her Community?

  13. We always celebrate Christmas at home - we used to celebrate at my grandmothers. But as she has passed on and we have five kids, four in-laws, and three grands, we now celebrate at home. We stick to some old traditions plus have started a few new ones - such as no store bought gift exchanges - everything has to be homemade. Has turned out to be the biggest hit of our Christmas, everyone has said they do not want to go back to the "store-bought" Christmas.

  14. We always spend Christmas at home. With our 3 children, their spouses, and 6 g-children, all with spouses, having other places to go, we have started a form of Open House, where platters of food are ready from Noon to 8 p.m. and they can all drop in. It seems it's one long day of eating and laughter.
I would love to read this book as I've recently got back into Christian Fiction and have found my feelings, emotions and actions changed. I always loved the Serenity Prayer but after reading a book by Kingsbury, I realized I was not practicing one part of it. I was not accepting the things I couldn't change. I'd give God my problems and then try to solve them myself.

Now, I turn everything over to God and ask Him to lead and guide me through out each day.

I've seen His work...He cured my husband of cancer this past year. Thank you Dear God.

Thank you for your help....Hugs, Linda

We start with breakfast then the Christmas story is read from the Bible then we exchange gifts. I enjoy the grankids excitement. I could careless if I got a gift I did already get it their love. I have the greatest gift God's love. Thats pretty much my holiday.

  32. Hello Diana. You did a good review on Barbara's book. It is a good one. I have to get the courage to do a review which I have never done. Just don't want to mess up. She is a good writer tho. Would love to have all of her books. I hope to win this with others. Might even donate it to the Library. That way other people can read her Christmas book and get introduced to her books. Think that would be good! Thanks for the chance to win it. My family which is quite large gathers at one or other of my kids, taking turns each year. I just enjoy it everytime I have so many together to watch and listen to their chatter and laughter. That would be enough for my Christmas, but of course the kids don't agree. We also celebrate my middle girl's birthday since she was a gift to me from GOD on Christmas Day in 1958. Best gift I ever had. I was in another state for years and didn't get to have this. 37. My Mother and I went on an exciting vacation one time. We live in Louisiana and we drove to California, because I had never seen any of the western states beyond Texas. I saw desert, Indian reservation, mountains with snow, Pacific ocean, beach, a few whales coming in, sea lions, almond and pistachio orchards, the last place James Dean stopped before he died and I experienced many more things. The best was meeting my Mom's oldest brother's family and spending Christmas with them. My Mom is the youngest of eleven children and the oldest brother was a half brother that died when I was small. I had not seen his children since I was a child and never had met their family. Also, Mom had an older sister still living in California, but in bad health. I made sure we went to see her; they had not seen each other in years. Those two women cried and cried, but I was thankful the next year she passed away. A trip I'll never forget, because now I'm disabled because of a medical error and wouldn't be able to make the trip. Lots of great memories and excitement!!

  43. No, I've never been on an exciting Christmas vacation. As a child, we never visited relatives because they lived several states away - a fourteen hour drive - one way. Plus, I was raised Jehovah's Witness, so, we never celebrated Christmas much.

As an adult, we'll usually go to in-laws house or go home. At my parents house, not much celebrating due to my mom's beliefs, but, we may visit just because we're off from work for the holiday. It's only about an hour and a half drive from me and my hubby's home.

Our son seems content with staying at home, or going to in-laws or my parents house. We do have a Christmas tree.

We usually have Christmas at home and certainly haven't gone anywhere exciting, but one year we desperately needed to get away for a break, and so we went to Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, and spent Christmas there in a gorgeous unit! It was also where we first got to spend some some quality time getting to know our daughters boyfriend, our future son-in-law. We all played the game Scattergories and killed ourselves laughing over it. Everyone had so much fun, and I think he decided he really liked his future in-laws then! I have really fond memories of our car ride. We didn't have money for a motel, so dad would drive day and night. There were three of us. All little. My younger brother slept on the floor. I slept on the back seat and my baby sister slept in the back window. We woul NEVER do this now.
This year will be a very rough Christmas for me and my siblings. We lost both parents this past year. A very short time apart from each other. I cannot bear the thought of folllowing tradition do some of us plan to travel ftom our home on the east coast to my older siblings on the west coast. Still with family, but something new.
I look forward to the opportunity to win.

    1. LINDA, thank you so much for coming by and for your kind words. I think we have had Anne Mateer on OWG as well, but don't quote me on that! lol We have had so many great authors I can't keep track! Yes, I need to go back to CARRIE'S party for some refreshments as the hour is getting late and I haven't yet eaten. ;)

  50. I love Amish books. The setting in New York will make this an awesome book. We have always spent the Christmas holidays at home. I can't imagine spending the holidays anywhere else!

  53. I am a stay at home for Christmas type. Although one year we went to my in-laws in Vegas, much to the dismay of my daughter's boyfriend who had planned to propose on the holiday. So he had to "communicate" with us as to where we were, etc, etc, so he could surprise her by flying in to Vegas and to pop the question in the city that never sleeps. A Christmas to remember!

  56. The closest We have ever been gone at Christmas was a couple of weeks before we went to Disneyland. Boy, if that won't put you in the Christmas mood, nothing will. It was great! I am still fortunate. Enough to still have both parents and my children and grandchildren live close so we all get together at Christmas. It is wonderful!

  57. I have never gone anywhere for Christmas. I have always celebrated at home. I did move away and, therefore, have a new home, so sometimes we travel to my birth home to celebrate with family. Either way, it's home. :-)
This book looks so awesome and so very interesting. I would love to see what happens and it would be an honor to win it. Thank you for this opportunity.

  61. I see you already did the giveaway, but thought I would share anyway. We always celebrate Christmas at home, and now that our kids have their own families, we usually celebrate together on Christmas Eve, so they can make their own Christmas morning traditions with their kids. I HAVE however, been to NYC including just before Thanksgiving, when many of the holiday decorations up and I can't imagine the awe of it through someones eyes, such as the Amish. We have even seen the Rockefeller Tree, being put up, with the scaffolding all around it (they put it up in pieces...), but there is a possibility, we MAY be able to see it w/o the scaffolding this year, during the early part of Dec. This would be a short assignment, due to the holidays and I was 1st thinking I would skip it, but then I decided I want to see the big tree w/o scaffolding, so thinking we very well, may use airline points to get me there with him... I hope I get the chance to read this book--it sounds WONDERFUL!
