Carrie Fancett Pagels has written a wonderful
historical romance set during the Civil War. This story takes place at Shirley
Plantation in Charles City, Virginia. I have heard great things about Shirley
Plantation and reading this novella was like I was finally arriving there and
getting to see it with my own eyes.
I think the author nicely described the layout of the
plantation—clearly she must have been there, and while walking the grounds of
Shirley Plantation she must have fantasized about the stories that could have
taken place there.
I loved reading about Angelina and Matthew—how they
met at Shirley Plantation and how the first sparks of chemistry filled the air.
But this is not only a love story—it is war and there are secrets and a mystery
to unravel.
This novella was a great historical read that gave me
a glimpse into the world from long ago. I’d like to applaud the author with
this beautifully written story with endearing characters, rich historical
detail, and a good Christian message. Well done, Carrie!
