Julie Lessman's new release "A Love Surrendered" Reviewed by Carrie Fancett Pagels

A Love Surrendered
A Love Surrendered
by Julie Lessman
(Revell, 2012)

Loved this book!
Susannah Grace Kennedy, or  "Annie" used to be called Grace by her older sister and parents. Now an orphan, Annie brings her younger sister, Glory, to Boston where they must live with a spinster aunt. (Beautiful story arc with the aunt.) Their older sister, Maggie, lives in Hollywood and from all the tales she told of her time at college in Boston, Annie longs to follow in her sister's footsteps.  Unfortunately, the innocent young women has no idea of how "fast" her sister's crowd was.  She's about to find out!

Enter Steven O'Connor, prohibition agent and Maggie's former beau, who knows all too well the cost of failing to keep himself from moral turpitude.  Although Annie knows who he is, Stephen doesn't realize the young beauty he attempts to protect is Maggie's little sister. He makes it his mission to protect her from both the young women she's been associating with and the men who seek to take advantage of her innocence.

Julie does a great job of moving the reader past the "ew" factor of having two sisters in love with the same man, who has been a lover to the older sister. She's dealt with similar territory before in the extended O'Connor family and knows how to hook the reader and get them so involved they can understand why the characters might still fall in love.

Stephen and Annie both have their own spiritual issues to resolve. Annie finds a woman at church who begins guiding her--Stephen's older sister! Beautifully rich scenes where Annie is pulled into the circle of the O'Conner women's open arms. In fact, the entire extended O'Connor clan shows up in this novel, which is marvelous!

Wonderful secondary storyline woven in of Patrick and Marcy's progress in making decisions whether to adopt their foster daughter or not.  Always love the scenes with the parents and can't wait to read their story "A Light in the Window" which is available for pre-order now.

Bibliotherapy: Sexual abstinence, foster parenting vs. adoption, sibling issues, alcohol use and abuse,  forgiveness, and loss of parents. Lots of great reading about overcoming!

The only problem with this book is that it concludes Julie Lessman's six books series! BUT--I ordered the audiobook, the first audiobook available, and so I can listen to this story again! And I have the pre-quel ahead of me!  I could not wait for the audiobook so I read the NG download on my Kindle.

As usual we have Passion with a Purpose all through this book.  Julie's mission is to caution young women about making poor decisions in relationships that have veered toward the mainly physical attraction and to find God's best for their lives.

A Love Surrendered has been placed on my Best of 2012 list!!!

I received a copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

  1. CARRIE great review! Sounds like you enjoyed this book as much as I did! Glad you mentioned that it's on your Best of 2012 list, don't think I have to tell you but it's on mine too! :)

  2. Oh, CARRIE ... you made me cry! Admittedly, not a hard thing to do with this weepy CDQ, but even so, I have tears welling in my eyes over this incredibly beautiful review.

All three of your girls have absolutely blessed the socks off of me, and I cannot thank you enough for your kindness and your friendship. It gives my heart GREAT JOY to know that some of my favorite people in the world like what I do. Not too many feelings better than that in this business, I can tell you that!

Love you, love this blog and love the beautiful ladies who work with you to bring others SO much joy through Christian fiction and wonderfully insightful reviews.

    Hugs and more hugs,
    Julie

  5. TERESA, Did you see the nice compliment Anne gave me? She thought my review was written by you!

I wonder if it will be a trio or quartet of 2012 favorite of the year?

  6. I loved this review so much I had to read it twice! Really! JULIE it has been a joy and a pleasure having you as our guest this week and I know I can speak for all of us when I say the feelings are reciprocated! You are the BEST!

Carrie, how are we going to narrow it down to 10 faves for 2012?...we have had the best of the best authors here on OTT this year!! ALS is going to be at the top of my list...that much I'm sure of!

  7. JULIE, since my wonderful friends agreed to be beta readers PLUS I had a former editor read through my last completed MS, and I got these kind of comments from them I DO finally know what it is like to have something give you this kind of feedback. It is thrilling and yet humbling at the same time to get the affirmation that your work of love for the Lord has touched others.

What a great finish to a fabulous series!!!

  8. HAHA Anne, yes you do!!! But you are making me hungry and I am trying to stay off food again because of the return of the stomach ninjas. Hugs!

  10. I have a typo in there Diana. I think I'll go fix it. I reread it too and more because it didn't quite make sense to me, lol, but that's all right...

    How's your company doing today?

    ReplyDelete
  11. CARRIE yes I did see what ANNE wrote, it made me lol. Did you see that I replied almost the same thing about you that you said about me??!! We are thinking alike today! :) I am sure this book will be at the top of all our 2012 lists.

  12. ANNE how cute! I'm sure if your babies could read they would say "it's ok nonna, we understand, we thought the review was great too!" LOL I think you deserve that book too so GOOD LUCK!!! :)

  13. JULIE thank you for your beautiful words. It's always a pleasure having you on the blog with us. You certainly brighten up the place with your sweet spirit, when the good Lord made you He put an extra dose of His love into you and it shines on everything you do. Thank you for blessing us with the O'Connor family, we're going to miss them but also can't wait for the next family you'll introduce us to. Cassidy McClare sounds like like another girl I'm going to love! Can't wait until April! :)

  15. AW, DIANA, we definitely have a love fest going on here, that's for darn sure!!

I remember when I worked a travel agency where we all sat in cubes, I shared a cube with my job-share partner. Since we were in on different days, I seldom saw her, so when I did, we would squeal and hug and catch up like two chattering magpies and I always smile when I think of the writer on the other side of our cube wall. She was a crusty older gal (whom I loved!), and every single time she heard us, you'd hear her say, "Oh, GROAN ... it's the love fest again ..." ;)

I say all that to say that I feel EXACTLY the same way about you guys -- I honestly feel like it's a love fest because my feelings are SO strong for each of you -- the women you are and the fabulous reviewers and promoters of fiction that glorifies God -- that I feel SO very blessed to call each of you my friends!!

Okay ... going now because I'm making a sap of myself ...

    Hugs,
    Julie

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh I can TOTALLY see you as a travel agent, JULIE!!! Wondering where that co-worker was from originally because I can just imagine someone from the northeast saying that, lol!

Yes, we have a different feel here. You have to run from the hugs! And we are the same way in person for Diana and me and I hear Teresa, too! Marian--are you a big hugger?

I know you are, Julie, because I was told to look for the woman who is hugging everyone (2010 conf)! That year was kind of a stuffy crowd and I think I was the second biggest hugger behind you and raised some eyebrows!

  19. GREAT review, Carrie, and I looooved your comments describing Julie's mission to caution young ladies in finding God's best for their lives!! That message rings true no matter what time period you're reading and I love how Julie incorporates that with her books :)

I find Julie to be like her books, she has passion with a purpose, so lovely!!
Thank you also Julie for posting that link for your excerpts with this post, very helpful!

Hugs and blessings to each of you :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hey KARA, thanks!!! That seems to be Julie's mission with her writing, which she has verified. And she writes about that in various places, how she wants young women to be aware of God's "passion with a purpose" in a marriage and how when we are outside His will, well... things happen that aren't good.

    BLESSINGS and HUGS!!!

  30. I have only read A Passion Redeemed & it was the 2nd of 3 so I jumped right in there. Thought I would throttle the main character but the book showed her in her 'lost' state to redeeming herself through Jesus.

  31. I really liked all of Julie's books (I'm currently reading A Love Surrendered). To answer your question, the book I most related to was A Heart Revealed. Though thankfully I've never been through experiences as bad as Emma, I can relate to her feelings of unworthiness. I know God loves me and accepts me as I am, but having been rejected by my former husband, makes the feelings get in the way at times.
Thanks for these great reviews of Julie's new book and for giving away a copy of one of her books (I love that the winner has a choice!).

  32. KATHLEEN, I loved that one, too! Hey do u want to borrow my Kindle copy of the first one?

    MARISSA--which one is your fave?

    ReplyDelete
  33. MELISSA--do you have a fave? And what about it did you relate to in particular or was it simply a good read?

KIM--Thanks for sharing! Sounds like simply a good read and you didn't have to relate to the characters to enjoy the story.

    ReplyDelete
  34. MARIAN, I think I really tried hard to NOT do a spoiler this time. I thought I might get into trouble about saying "ew" factor, lol. Maybe that was the real reason Julie cried when she read it. That and the two typos that I corrected.

    ReplyDelete
  35. MELODY LOL--I love your spunky comments! Throttle her indeed--we all know you you are talking about!!

PAM, I loved Emma's story and found her one of the most relatable because of her maturity and faith yet fighting her trait of being too kind to undeserving people such as her rotten ex.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh and I don't have a rotten ex, lol, I just have one wonderful hubby who reminds me of Patrick. And we are celebrating 25 years of marriage this year!!!

  41. LOL, CARRIE, am I a hugger??? Are you kidding?? I will give you a run for your money, darlin', guaranteed!! My Marketing person at Revell HATES to be be hugged, but I hugged her so much that now I am the only one she allows to hug her! ;) And, Lordy, don't even get me started with you girls here, because if I ever got the chance to see you all together in person, there would laughter, tears and hugs a plenty, guaranteed!!

I know you are going to ACFW next year (I hope!), but will Diana, Teresa and Marian be going? I sure would love that and add Laura and MaryLu, and I'm in hog heaven ... uh, not that I'm calling you guys hogs ... :|

    Love you!

  43. CARRIE, I just stopped by to groan. Groooaaannn.... Did I understand Teresa to say we have to wait til April for the next series? Groan again.

And yes, our pics should all be on the Huggie Diapers boxes. Not that any of us wear diapers (lol), but we are a huggie bunch!

    ReplyDelete
  44. JULIE, I am the only fiction writer in the bunch so that is a big no for the ACFW conference. I have desensitized Dina Sleimann to some extent and she doesn't run from me after our Tidewater Area Writers meetings any more! When I was a psychologist I was super careful about any contact like that especially because of kids who have issues with touch. My mom was not a hugger so I have made up for it!!!

LOL, MELISSA ... I would "LOVE" for you to win, too, darlin' so GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS!!

Hey, KIM, I'm glad you enjoyed AHU, but the real fun comes with relating to characters, so I'm anxious to see which of the O'Connor sisters or sister-in-laws you will relate to! They really all are VERY different, so it's always fun for me to see how different people connect with them. Maybe we can get one in your hands through this contest, and you and I can discuss which sister you might have the most in common with, okay?

    Hugs,
    Julie

    ReplyDelete
  49. MARISSA ... well, we'll do our best to get this book in your hands, my friend, because you are working those giveaways, which is a pretty good way to do it. GOOD LUCK!!

MARIAN ... no spoilers here ... Carrie did good! ;) Even the "ew" factor" didn't make me flinch because it's not actually the first time I've heard it, and it is a very sticky situation she's referring to, so I totally understand. I tend to wade in close to the "ew" factor" a lot because I'm a drama queen, which gets me into trouble in some reviews, but oh well ... :)

LOL, MELODY ... if you wanted to throttle Charity in APR, I shudder to think what she would have done to you in the first book, A Passion Most Pure. I actually had readers write me to ask me to slap Charity for them and others that wanted to see her "maimed" or "killed." She definitely elicits a strong response, but I'll tell you what -- NOBODY in the series grows more than her spiritually except for the men and by the 5th book in the saga, she will be your favorite because she is a laugh a minute. :)

    Hugs,
    JUlie

    ReplyDelete
  50. PAM!!! Oh, I'm anxious to hear what you think of ALS, my friend, so keep me posted, okay? GOOD LUCK!!

CARRIE!!! HAPPY 25TH, sweetie -- when??? And that is SOOO like you to lend your Kindle vs. of AHU to Kathleen -- you are really something, my friend. And, KATHLEEN??? You need to take her up on it because I definitely want you to read this book, okay??

DIANA and TERESA may come down there and take me to a wonderful plantation where I have a much older MS set--Middleton. Maybe that will inspire me to go back to it. My agent and I discussed this MS for an hour last year at conf but it didn't fit into either of the first two proposals we had. We'll see if I can find a way to do something with it.

  60. The book that most resonated with me was A Passion Redeemed. I liked how a flawed (yet, I do like Charity the best - her schemes are always hilarious) individual can grow and become a strong woman in Christ, and can turn what was considered "flaws" into something beautiful - like 'beauty for ashes'

  65. Oh, I HAVE to answer this question! Goodness...I think that out of all the books, for me, it was either Lizzie(APD) or Annie (ALS). They both had the "kid" status going on, which I can totally understand. But Annie touched me the most! If I could be half of what Annie is, I think I would be set for life! lol! I have to be honest, I wish she was real so we could talk...ehehe! Yes, definitely Annie because she's young and she has a heart for God...you just don't see that a lot these days. I think we'd be fast friends! =)

  81. Hey, MARISSA ... you know, I thought I posted a comment to you already, but it's not here, so I will repeat it. Knowing that APD and AHR are your faves convinces me that's because you are probably as gentle and loving an individual as Lizzie and Emma, in which case I would love you all the more!! Thanks for entering and here's to a win, my friend. :)

EMILY!!! That is so interesting because when I created Annie's character, I was actually modeling her after Faith. I wanted to come full circle at the end of this saga with a heroine who resembled Faith in her deep commitment to God, which is why I had Faith as her mentor. But reading your comment tonight, I can really see the association with Lizzie as well because Lizzie ended up having the faith of her sister Faith, but she had to grow into more than Faith did, which is exactly what Annie had to do too. So you just gave me insight into the story that I didn't have before -- VERY COOL!!

    Hugs,
    Julie

  82. Hey, KATHY ... Thank you SO much for your kind comment, sweetie! And 1st, 3rd and 5th, eh? Well that pretty much pegs you as a sweet, gentle girl who loves God A LOT because that's exactly who all three of those stories were about -- Faith, Lizzie and Emma! But like Emma commented earlier, I think you may end up adding Annie to your list as well, which leads me to believe you may just like this book a lot ... or at least I hope so!! GOOD LUCK!

MELODY!!! Oh, I am SOOOO glad you're going to dive in to A Passion Most Pure!!! It is the first of six books in this family saga, and since you already kind of like Charity, hopefully she won't come across as mean as she does without knowing her. And by book 5 in the saga (book 2 of the Winds of Change series), you will absolutely LOVE her because she is SUCH a hoot!! Happy reading and PLEASE let me know what you think, okay?

    Hugs,
    Julie

  83. LOL, KATHLEEN, you are definitely more the old school like me -- I like the feel of a book in my hand and being able to easily look at the cover, so I don't blame you for waiting for the paperback. Let's hope we can get it to you soon ... :)

JOY!!!! Oh,honey, you are SO appropriately named because you have given me SO much joy with your incredible review and support you know where!! Thank you for coming by and I'd love to see you win, you sweet thing.

    Hugs,
    Julie

  85. Hi Carrie, I just found your website through Tamela and found your review on Julie's "A Love Surrendered". (I know, I'm too late for the drawing!) But I just had to comment that the book looks awesome! I just spent years writing my personal story, "A Widow's Pursuit" that I just put on amazon.com. Part of my story is exactly that. I had the same passion and purpose to caution young widows about making poor decisions in their relationships and instead find God's best. I will visit you again and will also put Julie's book on my list for 2013! Thanks, Cindy
