Heiress (Daughters of Fortune)

Review by Diana L. Flowers

Powerfully Moving Story!

Susan May Warren pens a powerfully moving story that takes place during the Gilded Age of America, a time of the elite set; of riches and glamorous cotillions, motorcars and yachts, and forbidden passions and discontentment. It is the story of two sisters, Esme and Jinx Price, daughters of the wealthy newpapaper magnate, August Price, who are as different as night and day. Esme wishes only to follow in her father's footsteps, to become a famous female journalist, whereas her younger sister, Jinx, wants only to be a member of the elite society, possessing great riches and status, to the point of wanting her own sister's fiance, the wealthy Foster Worth.

Broken-hearted Esme's journey takes her to Montana, a far cry from what she was use to in New York; a mining town with vigilantes, gamblers, and a saloon-turned-headquarters for her newspaper. She has no desire to ever marry, but meets the handsome Daughtry Hoyt, wealthy son of the owner of Silverthread Mines. Will she find love again and what terrible tragedy draws her back to her opulent home in New York City?  Does she learn to commit her ways to the Lord and finally find peace?

Jinx seems to have everything her heart could ever desire; a wealthy husband, jewels, the best parties, but her life is just a facade. One foolish night threatens to ruin her life forever, and her best laid plans for her future come crumbling in on her. Is there something deeper that money can't buy, and does Jinx find it? Will love's elusive dream ever find her again?

This is the second series I have read by Susan May Warren, and all I can say is NOW I see why she wins so many awards for her writing. I was a little nervous starting into this book, because Ms. Warren does not sugarcoat her characters or her storyline at all. Her characters are human and sinful, and not knowing God they do some pretty awful things, but you find yourself loving them anyway. The storyline drew me in, and I found myself not being able to put this book down after I got into it, except out of necessity. This novel was heartbreakingly realistic....edgy to be sure, but oh, what a satisfying conclusion!

Susan May Warren, you are one master storyteller!

GIVEAWAY:  We are giving away a copy of one of Susan's books this week - your choice of book and format (ebook, paperback)! This book is also available for purchase through other outlets such as Christian Book Distributors (See all Susan May Warren's books on CBD).

  2. Your review was so vivid, I am going to have to check out all Susan's books! There is nothing like sibling rivalry that gets me all bothered, and this book sounds like it has tons of conflict.

    Great review!

  3. Marian and Sherrinda, it's great to see both of you this morning, and thank you. I LOVE books that are unpredictable and this one certainly is that! I'm looking forward to Baroness which comes out in March, I believe, and expect it to be excellent as well!

  4. Great review Diana, can't wait to read this one. My TBR pile is getting higher and higher. Wouldn't it be terrible if I got lost in all those books?! :)

  10. Diana, you must have been awed to interview Susan. In some ways I related to the information she gave you. It would be good therapy for me to read Susan's books and since my Kindle is getting saturated...I'd love a book. Susan is a definite plus to the world of authoring. Thanks for this giveaway and the chance to win a wonderful story.

    Blessings,

  11. It's so good to see you, Barb! It's been awhile! I would have been VERY awed to interview Susan, but I can't take credit for that since Carrie did the interview, so I will have to let her answer that one. :) I was awed and touched just reading it! And it was an honor for me to review Heiress. I agree, Barb, Susan is is a definite plus to us readers!

  13. Barb, Susan is not that type of person - she isn't into awing anybody from what I have been able to tell since I met her a few years ago through various writing forums. She is a very down-to-earth person who has a cheerleader type personality - very outgoing and likes to help people. I was truly shocked to read her interview as I had no idea what she had gone through in Russia as a missionary.

  14. Barb, I think we tend to be "awed" by people we have never met, because we tend to forget they are people just like we are, and we put them on a pedestal. I would be awed meeting the race car legend, Richard Petty, but since my hubby has met him, talked and clowned around with him, it's not a big deal, even though he highly respects him. I would be speechless, probably, which is a hard thing to imagine, I know!

  22. We were fortunate to have Susan visit our church a few years ago for a luncheon. Love her novels. What a special gift she has - romance, suspense and humor. Our book club reads a couple of SMW books per year - one of our favorite authors.

  26. Ooooo, I have heard SO many good things about this book, that I would love to be entered except I've won so many books from poor Carrie lately that I am not holding my breath! :)

LOVE your blog, my friend, and will read this book whether I win it or not, so thanks for the great review.

    Hugs,
    Julie

  27. Dear, sweet, lovable, and funny, Julie! Always such a pleasure when you drop by! We have had many people win 2, 3, 4, 5 times, etc., so you may come back and try to win as often as you'd like! I can really see you loving this book, b/c of the type of books you write. Always a pleasure to see you again, Julie!

  28. I always love reading your reviews, Diana, and learn so much about the craft of writing them! Heiress was indeed heartbreakingly realistic.

Julie, I think this must be the "blessed" blog for winning books :) I have won several from Carrie. Of course, she is such a generous person!

  29. Oh, Anne, you are so wonderfully kind, but I envy the way you write yours! We are our own worse critics, I suppose. One thing I make sure that I do before every review is pray and ask the Lord to help me to do the book justice and anoint my words, for without Him I couldn't do or write a thing.

Carrie is indeed one of the most generous people I know, Anne!

  30. I would love to read this one, too. Susan May Warren is the perfect example of why the cliche' 'those that can, do, those that can't, teach' is SO WRONG.

I know I am going to read this someday, and I'm glad there are more in the series.thanks Diana!

  31. Hey, Debra! Thanks for coming by! I quite agree and although I've never heard Susan teach, I'm sure she's good at everything she sets her mind to. Dropping your name in the hat...maybe you will have a chance to read this sooner than you think!

  32. I would like to be entered in the giveaway! I receive Susan's newsletters and am always blessed by them, but I haven't read nearly as many of her books as I would like. Thanks for this opportunity! :-)

  37. Thank you, Susan! I always wondered if authors get nervous that their new book won't live up to their previous ones. It seems alot of pressure, but nothing that Susan need worry about!
