Diana Flowers Reviews Heart's Safe Passage by Laurie Alice Eakes

Heart's Safe Passage
by Laurie Alice Eakes
(Revell, 2012)

4.5 stars~
Romance On The High Seas!

In Heart's Safe Passage, Laurie Alice Eakes has weaved an exciting tale of intrigue, betrayal, vengeance, and romance on the high seas!
It is the year 1813, and our lovely heroine, Phoebe Lee wishes only to practice midwifery in Virginia, amidst the turmoil of the War of 1812. Her pregnant sister in law, Belinda, arranges for Phoebe to be kidnapped and thrust aboard a British privateer, in order to accompany her to rescue her husband from an English prison. The captain of the ship, Rafe Docherty, has agreed to do this for Belinda, in exchange for information from her husband, that he might exact revenge on the man who has destroyed his family.

Rafe has had but one thing on his mind in nine years, to find and kill the man who has perpetrated such horrific crimes on his wife, and parents. Although, not British nor American, he and his twelve year old child have sailed the wild seas in search of the elusive James Brock, the man responsible.

Although fiercely attracted to the lovely Phoebe, Rafe will let nothing stand in the way of his quest for vengeance, but will he lose his own soul in the process? What horrendous secrets is he hiding, and can Phoebe break through the tremendous wall of bitterness he has built around himself? And what of Phoebe? What gut-wrenching secrets is she concealing, causing a canker of bitterness to grow deep within her as well, although she is a Christian? Can the two find peace with God and love again, or will their bitterness destroy them?

Laurie Alice Eakes is a brilliant author...face it, anyone that can make a story exciting with a ship as the setting throughout...has to be! Her characters are very realistic and endearing, her research and knowledge of ships is astounding, her storyline exceptional. With a strong spiritual thread of forgiveness and redemption throughout, and a satisfying conclusion, this is a must read! My reason for giving this book a 4.5 rating instead of a five is very small...I don't care for shipboard settings, but it didn't ruin the book for me. Nicely done, Ms. Eakes!

I was sent an ARC of this novel from Revell Publishing Co. and was not required to write a positive review.

Laurie Alice's books can be found on Amazon, as well as CBD, and other book stores.

  12. Thank you all for stopping by. Diana and Theresa and Marian... You put me to the blush. I am really fortunate in the art department's work. I give them a vague idea and they run with it. I said, "I'd like the heroine standing on the deck of a ship with her hair loose in the wind..." And they came up with this. I was so wonderfully excited to get it.

Teresa, I love highseas books, too. It's why Marylu Tyndall and I are such good friends, or how we got together that is.

  15. DIANA, great review! TERESA - I wonder if in the Netherlands MARIAN is familiar with the expression "looks like the whole gang is here" lol!

  16. LAURIE ALICE can continue to write under the most difficult situations, which is amazing!

  17. Thanks, Carrie! I'm amazed at the American expressions Marian knows and uses! Sometimes she googles, but not very often, I don't think. After Carrie's Dutch translation the other week, I'm not sure we trust google very well anymore, do we Marian? ;)

  18. Yep, sure looks like the whole gang is here. LOL
I understand most Americans expressions. Sometimes I use an online dictionary for translation from Dutch to English. It's easy to understand/read English, but to make up the words that I want to use is something else. When I checked the dictionary I always think: Of course! I know that word. :))
Didn't use the dictionary in this comment. ;)

  30. LAURIE ALICE, it looks like those Lady in the Mist fans really want to read Heart's Safe Passage, too!

MURRAY, good for you!!! DIANA is an awesome reviewer, and we are so happy to have her as our Senior reviewer!

    ReplyDelete
  31. MURRAY, what a nice comment AND compliment! Thank you as well, Carrie! Murray is my new author friend, and I'm soon to find out what a romantic he is, b/c Im currently awaiting his new book in the mail, A Bride's Flight! I will let everyone know...;)

I think a male would particularly like this one, Murray, as L A Eakes goes into such detail (she is so smart) about ships, the war, etc, not just romance.

  32. Laurie Alice, I still think so fondly of Lady in the Mist. It was my first review ever on OTT! Why Carrie ever asked me if she could post it on here has to be God, b/c the review was rather puny. LOL! I had never written but a couple! And that's when Carrie asked me to join her here as a contributor...so I love Lady in the Mist for more than one reason. Thank you for your wonderful writng, Laurie, and I can't wait for the next installment in The Midwife Series!
