The Colonel’s Lady

Reviewed by Marian Baay

5 stars *****

I've been impatiently waiting for the release of The Colonel's Lady. As I became to love Laura's previous books I was sure that I would not be disappointed with this book!

Roxanna Rowan is traveling from Virginia to Kentucke to visit her father who serves as an officer under Colonel McLinn. When she arrives at Fort Endeavor she learns that her father was recently killed. She can't return and has no other options than to stay in her father's cabin.

Colonel Cassius McLinn was with Roxanna's father when he died and promised him to take care of Roxie.

While reading how their lives come together I imagined living in the Fort with them. I could smell the odors, hear the people talking and shouting, hear the bullets whistling, feel the winter cold and... feel the chemistry between the colonel and his lady *sigh*. I was really there and witnessed it all. Few authors can make me feel like I'm actually in the story.

This was a great read! Very well done, Laura!

  6. Historical fictions are so much fun because, although the characters are not real, it's conceivable that a story such as this could have actually happened. I have no doubt that if we could somehow see into the past, into the lives of every ordinary individual, we would find thousands of stories so fascinating as to have never even been thought of by the greatest of today's fiction authors.

  7. Happy Valentine's Day to all, especially my dear Laura!

All of Laura's books are on my lifetime keeper shelf. I have reviewed them and blogged about them, and I look forward to her upcoming releases. There are not enough review stars in the sky to describe the worth and wonderfulness of the writing of Laura Frantz!

I can't wait for LR to come out!! Since I own them all I won't enter this competition but whoever wins this one is one lucky person:)

  20. Happy Valentine's Day! Wow, the Dutch cover is beautiful. I think the heroine looks a bit like Catherine Heigel. I'm hearing so many wonderful things about your writing, Laura, I look forward to reading my first book by you.

  21. Happy Valentine's Day, Lisa! You are in for a wonderful treat. Laura is the only author I ever took the time to write a handwritten letter to; I was so impressed with her first book and our computer had bit the dust. I just had to let her know how I felt about it, and it was well worth my time...it was quite a lengthy letter (haha)! I've never regretted doing that, for not only is she a brilliant author, but one of the sweetest ladies I've ever met!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Courting Morrow Little is the best book I read in 2011!!! Hands down.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Wow! So many comments so early on the day!
Okay, it's end of the afternoon in the Netherlands, but most of the commenters are from the US I guess. So nice that you all stopped by to say hi. :)

Happy Valentines day to you all!

  24. The Colonel's Lady was the best novel on the West that I've ever read. Would love to win one of her other books.

  25. OH MY WORD! All these precious comments! My Valentine's Day is made!! Skip the chocolate - I'll take these gracious words any day:) Diana, Carrie, and Marian - you all make any day special and this is no exception. And thanks, Marian, for such a wonderful review! Knowing how you enjoyed TFD, I was a wee bit nervous when you began TCL so am thrilled you enjoyed the story. I treasure the pics of you with that book!

Janell, SO good to see you here:) My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and their work so it's wonderful when you pop up and remind me to keep at it!

Paula, Welcome here - would love to send a book and chocolates your way:) They're a stellar combo. I just polished off some chocolate covered cherries myself though I am trying to watch that expanding waist of mine. Am seriously thinking of investing in some stays;)

Judy, Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. It's great to see new and familiar faces and I'm really blessed when I meet new readers (and chocolate lovers). Have a happy heart day!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Janella (Grace) - Oh, you said the magic words - writes beautifully. A million thanks for that. From the time I was a little girl I've always felt that writing was beautiful, or should be:) Bless you so much for that. And a heartfelt thanks for stopping here!

Gary, I agree! Your enjoyment of history/fiction shines through! I've often wished I could just go back in time to the 18th-century for just a day or so and experience what I try to create on the page. Oh my! I'm feeling a tangent coming on and could write a novella about that! Bless you for stopping here. Love meeting new reading friends!

Dear Virginia, I know I've said it before but you have such a way with words. And you're a fabulous cook!! I can't wait till LR appears in your mailbox, my friend. You're such a dear friend and reader. I thank the Lord for you so often. And then you bless me here today!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Happy Valentine's Day! Laura's books are AMAZING and it's always such a long wait between books...or at least it seems that way to me LOL! I don't have time to read books over again but I've read Courting Morrow Little at least 3 times since it's release and I'm eagerly awaiting Love's Reckoning. I'd love to be entered for the chocolate. Thank you so much.

  28. Teresa, Hope you're feeling better today - thanks for being here and joining in the Valentine fun! The more the merrier, I say!

Jen, Thanks so much for wanting to take a gamble on a new author! I've read that readers tend to stay with ones they know so it's always a blessing when someone ventures and wants to read. I hope you enjoy TCL if you read it. It was such a joy to write!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Eva, I'm so touched by your kind words! And to think you've read them all and want to read them again - such a compliment to this author!! More than anything, you took time to come by and leave such thoughtful comments even when you have the books. That means so much. I just turned the galleys in for Love's Reckoning yesterday and the cover will be out any day now so am excited to share that with you and hope you like it. Bless you so much!

Stacie, Oh, YAY! I read your comments from yesterday when Julie guested and am still smiling about the "book candy." Surely the best kind of candy! You've been in my thoughts and prayers so much lately. Hope all is well and you're ready for spring, my friend!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Joan, Many thanks to you for buying TCL - hope it blesses you and gives you a Kentucky escape:) It was hard leaving my state and venturing into Pennsylvania for Love's Reckoning but am now so happy I made the leap! Happy Valentine's Day to you - and thanks so much for taking time here today!

Lisa, Likewise, I've been hearing wonderful things about yours! A little bird told me your book was shipped even earlier than planned so I can't wait to get it in hand any day now:) And I'm looking so forward to posting about it on my blog/site. You're right - she does look like Catherine H! Love that!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Charity, OH, love those words!! You've met Red Shirt and Morrow then:) That book will always have a special place in my heart. I so enjoyed writing about married love the way God intended. And I miss those characters very much! Thanks so much for being so kind and for stopping here. You bless me!

Linda, You spoil me! What an honor to have you say that about TCL. I must admit I was quite smitten with Colonel McLinn after he redeemed himself in the end. And I've even taken up knitting in the last month in honor of Roxanna:) So thrilled you want to keep reading my books. Happy Valentine's Day to you and yours!

    ReplyDelete
  32. RENEE, YAY!! It's YOU:) You pop up just when I need you;) Since you're such a voracious reader and reviewer, I'm always thrilled when my books make any list of yours. That cover for LR is sure being elusive!! Oh my... Anyway, would love to send some chocolates to PA:) You're a keeper, my friend!

  37. I haven't gotten my hands on Ms. Frantz's books yet, but everyone keeps telling me they are must reads!

Is that an officially released Dutch translation? I've seen a couple of Spanish versions of Christian fiction, but rarely anything else. Is there a reason why they chose Dutch?

Thanks for the chance to win!

  38. Yes Lady DragonKeeper, Laura's book releases in Dutch this week! The reason why they chose Dutch is me! ;)
I'm from the Netherlands and I'm reading and recommending books for the Dutch publisher. When I read this book I really LOVED it and recommended it for translation.

Laura's books are a must read! The Frontiersmans Daughter is my favorite book ever!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Liz and Lisa, thanks for stopping by. I hope you get the chance to read one of Laura's books soon. Maybe you win it today! :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. apple blossom and Renee, so good to see you here! So far I only read Laura's books once, but I plan to read The Frontiersmans Daughter in Dutch soon.

Welcome and happy valentines day to you! Thanks for writing such awesome books! I'm sooo looking forward to Love's Reckoning! But first of course De pioniersdochter later this week! That reminds me... I have to borrow my dad's camera to take another pic of myself and a Laura Frantz book. :))

  44. Hi Laura, it's me again, one of your book lovers, seems so appropriate on this day to tell you how much I love your book :)
Happy Valentine's day with a lot of our heavenly Father's love and a lot of love from al your fans!
Thanks Marian for pointing out Laura's book!
I hope to read an other book from your hand soon.
Big hugs and kisses from Holland.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh, so happy to see Marian here and Diana again:) You ladies are THE BEST:) A special welcome to Liz R and Patty and Lady Dragon Keeper! So fun to meet new folks.

Lisa, I would start backwards if I were you:) Maybe read TCL first? These readers here might disagree but my first book is not really a romance but more historical fiction. My hero doesn't even come in until page 200 or something! Romance readers, please forgive me for that! I've had many say it's their favorite of the 3 though. Bless you for being so kind.

Diana, I agree - Marian has the warmest, funnest (I know that isn't a word but it should be!) comments! And then there's you, my friend!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hey Mirjam! So glad to see you managed to make an account!

Mirjam is my book friend from the Netherlands. We're talking about books for the last seven years or so and we never get tired of it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thank you for your kind words, Laura. You're always giving a hearty welcome and warm comments. I do not only love your books, but I also love your personality and your comments!

Diana is always so sweet and polite. I love to read your comments and reviews, my dear friend!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Marian die kun je in je zak stoppen! Sorry had to tell her in Dutch that she received the nices complements ( I know that is not a correct word either haha)
And I must agree Marian you are the best!
Lady DragonKeeper, I must agree Laura's book The frontiers daughter is a very good book, haven't read her other books yet but they are on my list.
y"all have fun reading her books.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Mirjam, ik zit me soms rot te zweten hoe ik iets fatsoenlijk in het Engels moet zeggen. Ik begrijp dus niks van die complimenten, maar wel leuk om te horen natuurlijk. :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Thank you, Marian, and Laura! But my hubby would say "sweet and polite?"...you have her mixed up with another Diana! lol Especially when I have raging "horror"mones as my funny sis in law calls them! haha

    ReplyDelete
  51. No, I can't believe what you're telling me about those raging "horror"mones!!
I really think you're sweet and polite in your messages! Then I think we have to meet some day... LOL

    ReplyDelete
  52. haha, Marian, gaat je goed af hoor zie nix wat ik zelf beter zou kunnen.
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. LAURA!!! They put a different girl on the cover of the Dutch version, didn't they??? The original model looked like Yvette Mimeiux to me, so that's really funny!!

The day I discovered Laura Frantz was a day my faith in Christian romance SOARED to the sky because you are simply one of my all-time faves, my friend, and I thank God you are writing books!! Uh, but not fast enough to suit me or your readers, I'm sure!

    Hugs,
    Julie

  54. I loved all three of Laura's books. I have the first two (I read them several times) and I would love to have my own copy of The Colonel's Lady! Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  55. MARIAN, The Frontiersman's Daughter is still my favorite book, too, which is one of the reasons we get along so well, because I am not nice and polite like DIANA, LOL!!! I am SO glad the Dutch people are going to have their own translation of this awesome book!

    ReplyDelete
  56. This is why people shouldn't rely on Google translate:

Marian supposedly said - Miriam, I'm rotten to me sometimes how I sweat something decent to say in English. So I understand nothing of such compliments, but nice to hear that course. :)

Miriam said: hahaha, Marian, are you properly hear nix see what I could do better.

So, you can see Marian clearly writes her comments better than Google translate ever could, lol! I love having Marian contribute reviews.

Thomas Umstaadt at his workshop said that if she comes on as a contributor we can say we have an "international blog" LOL!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. MARY, We will enter you in the giveaway! Thanks for coming by the blog! Laura is an amazing writer.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh Mirjam!
So wonderful to see you here and big HUGS to you, too! I see we were posting at the same time earlier so your comment snuck by me:) I'm so thrilled to think of you enjoying my books and wanting to read the next. I can't wait to share the cover with you all!! When Revell sent it to me a couple of weeks ago I was beside myself:) With JOY - though it might have gone the other way - lol! Love your comments and the "y'all" as that makes me feel I'm back home in Kentucky. Bless you so much and thanks for being here!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. LAURA, Have you had a great Valentine's Day? Any time you are ready, you can pick someone for the chocolate. I will draw for your book in the morning and post it over here, okay?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Julie, We'll just engage in some mutual gushing here, my passionate friend:) Recently I asked - rather Revell asked, too - if Julie would be willing to endorse my next book and I must admit, given her way with words and family dynamics and passionate plots, I'm a bit "skeered" of what she might think! But Julie, you are always so gracious and kind about my work. I'll never forget you hosting me, a newbie nobody, on Seekerville a couple of years ago. And for being such a faithful friend. They just don't make 'em like you, truly!! It's a privilege to even share the same release date this September:) Counting down with you... And thanks so much for being here today!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. LAURA, somewhere they showed your book pre-order for July. Maybe Amazon. Did they move it up? I love JULIE's posts on Seekerville!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Mary, I'm so touched you've read my books more than once. That says so much. And I'd love for you to have your own copy of TCL! I love giveaways but always am a bit sad as I want to gift everyone!! Thanks so much for being here and making Valentine's Day a loving, lovely experience:)

    ReplyDelete
  63. I was going to try to google it too, Carrie! Thank you for saving me the trouble. I think something was somehow lost in the translation, however. lol

Marian, it is good that my "horror"mones don't rage too often. What you see is what you get with me most of the time. MOST of the time. haha

    ReplyDelete
  64. Have to go to Bible study in a few minutes and wanted to thank Carrie, Diana, and Marian for being the hostesses with the mostests;) This blog is a blessing in so many ways! I'll check back in later!

  70. LOL CARRIE!!

I think now you can understand why sometimes I'm sweating overhere to write the right comments AND reviews. I can't literally translate Dutch to English, because then you get something like the Google translator did. Even the order of words in a sentence is different.
