A Thoroughly Wunderbar Book!

In The Amish Bride, the reader is swept away to beautiful Amish country -- the picture of idyllic living with blooming daffodils, grazing cows in emerald green pastures, and clean clothes flapping in the breeze -- but underneath the guise of tranquility lie secrets, pain, and betrayal.

Ella Bayer is a lovely, young Mennonite woman who wants only to attend baking school, start her own bakery, and become the wife of her Amish sweetheart, Ezra Gundy. Seeking to separate the two, Ezra's family arranges for him to leave Lancaster County to work at a dairy farm in Indiana, although Ella has made it clear that she is willing to join the Amish church.

Meanwhile, Ella's grandmother gives her a book filled with mysterious codes and secrets, and entrusts Ella to crack the code for reasons of her own. To do so gives Ella the perfect opportunity to go to Indiana with Ezra, where the author of the book had lived, and her mammi has prepaid for her to go to baking school there as well. While there, Ella meets Luke, a shy, but kind Amish man and ends up working in close proximity to him.

Upon discovering that the two of them are together, Ezra's family immediately summon him back home, leaving a heartbroken Ella in Indiana. When a mysterious man shows up in Ella and her family's life, and disturbing secrets come to light -- will Ella stay where she is, or return to Lancaster to become Ezra's wife? Will she crack the code in the book and what are the consequences should she do so?...and if she leaves Indiana what of her friendship with Luke? Have they become more than mere friends?

Ok, I'm ashamed to admit it, but this is the first Amish book by Mindy Clark that I have read and I loved it! Although this is the third book in The Women of Lancaster County series it can be read as a stand alone. Her writing technique (I love how she pays so much attention to detail) and storyline is intriguing -- her characters -- all too human. Interspersed with a thread of suspense, and tough topics such as adultery, spousal abuse, and abandonment, this is one not to be missed!

Mindy Starns Clark Interviewed by Carrie Fancett Pagels

Mindy Starns Clark

Mindy Starns Clark is the author of Beauty to Die For, co-written with supermodel Kim Alexis.

Mindy, welcome to Overcoming Through Time – With God’s Help.  We appreciate your willingness to share your testimony of overcoming with our readers.
Would you tell us about the most difficult thing in your life you have had to overcome, with God’s help?
In April of 2011, I was off at our vacation house in the Poconos, writing around the clock to meet a book deadline, when I tripped and fell head first into the outer corner of a divider wall. I hit it hard enough to see stars, but I never lost consciousness, so I didn’t think I needed to go to the hospital.

By the next morning, however, my left eye was dark purple and swollen completely shut, so I drove myself to a nearby urgent care facility—where the doctor proceeded to read me the riot act. “Does the name Natasha Richardson mean anything to you?” she cried, meaning of course the actress who hit her head while skiing and later died.

The doctor couldn’t believe I had been so dumb as to sustain such a serious head injury and not only not seek medical treatment but also stay home all night, alone and unobserved. Suspecting a skull fracture, she sent me straight to the hospital for a CAT scan, but thank goodness there were no broken bones. I did, however, have what’s known as a “Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.” Now, a year and a half later, I’m still in the recovery process. I had no idea what I was in for, nor what an impact that injury would have on my entire life.

Sadly, I hit the wall at the left side of my forehead—injuring the left frontal lobe of my brain, which is the word center. Imagine that—a writer damaging her word center!  I never lost the ability to speak, but in the beginning I could barely write at all. I went from being able to pump out 3000-7000 words per day to barely being able to write 30 words per day! Truly, it almost felt like I’d had a stroke.  It was so scary.  Recovery was very slow. It took a whole year just to work up to 1000 words a day. Even though I’ve continued to progress, I’ve had to limit my commitments and scale back on various writing projects. Needless to say, it’s been a huge adjustment.

Beyond the limited word production, the biggest issue I’m struggling with now are the residual headaches from the injury. I went 434 days in a row with a headache before we finally found a neurological medication that made them go away. The problem is that the medication makes me foggy—but when I try to wean off of it, the headaches come back. So I’m kind of stuck in the middle ground of danged if I do and danged if I don’t.

I also still have a dent in my forehead. It isn’t pretty, but I don’t mind it. When you feel so rotten on the inside, it’s kind of validating to have such a visible symbol on the outside.

Thank goodness I have such a sweet husband and two amazing daughters, both grown. They have all been so wonderful throughout this entire experience, caring for me, consoling me, helping me, advising me, encouraging me, etc. In the beginning, they were all even writing for me, each of them taking a scene I had outlined and fleshing it out on my behalf as best they could.

Certainly, I wouldn’t ever want to go through the experience again, but I do have a few fond memories, especially from those early days when we all pulled together and did our best to get through that first draft despite my injury. Once I was finally clear-headed enough to review and polish their work, I have to say that I was pretty darn impressed with what they’d done. Someday we might just become a whole writing family!

What is your favorite bible verse and why?
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.

Through the years, I have learned (mostly the hard way) that God really does know what He’s doing, and if I will just relax and trust Him, He will work things out in my life according to His plan, which is always waaaay better than my plan—even when it doesn’t seem like it!

What has been the most important thing you hope your readers will get from your books and why?
I wrote Beauty to Die For with a wonderful co-author, supermodel Kim Alexis, and she was the driving force for our primary message. She’s a lovely lady with a real servant’s heart, and her goal with this story was pretty much summed up in our dedication:
For the mothers who put their kids first,
the volunteers who serve with glad hearts,
and all who give tirelessly and expect nothing in return.
Please remember to take care of yourselves as well,
to be mindful of your health,
and, once in a while,
to indulge in a little pampering.
God bless you for all you do!

I think as Christians we sometimes get so busy meeting other people’s needs that we forget to tend to our own. Our story takes place at a spa, where our heroine is leading a women’s retreat based on the theme, Isn’t it Time Someone Took Care of You for a Change? I think we could all use a little R&R now and then, and this story is a great reminder of that. Sometimes it feels a little selfish, but we can’t be at our best for others if we don’t take time for ourselves once in a while.

And in this day and age, the words, Be still and know that I am God are more important than ever before. How difficult it is for some of us to be still! But we simply have to get away from the noise of our lives if we want to hear the small whispers of God’s leading in our hearts. Of course, you don’t need a spa for that—but it is fun to go to one regardless, even if only through the pages of fiction.
Beauty to Die for

As you researched your books, did you learn anything that particularly touched your heart?
Yes. Kim and I made our main character a former supermodel who is nearing the big 5-0. All through the plotting and early writing phases, I was having a hard time getting into the mindset of this character, a beautiful woman who is struggling with getting older.  Having never placed much importance on my own looks, I simply couldn’t relate.

Then I sustained my head injury, and in one fell swoop, in a sense I lost my “brain.” Suddenly, I understood this character all too well. Whether it’s a beautiful woman who fears losing her looks or a smart woman who fears losing her intelligence, I realized that we shared the same exact problem, one of identity and how we define and value ourselves. Even as our character was asking herself, “If I’m not beautiful, then who am I?”, I was having to ask myself, “If I’m not smart, then who am I?” It was humbling, to say the least.
Of course, the answer can only be found at the feet of our Creator. What I ultimately learned is that our value has nothing to do with our looks or our brains or any other quality that we may happen to possess. Our value lies in the simple, overwhelming fact that God loves us. Nothing more, nothing less than that. For God so loved the world. For God so loved me. How dare I presume to assign significance to anything else but that?  Perhaps that’s the biggest lesson I will take from this whole experience. Perhaps that has even made it worth it in the end.
Kim Alexis and Mindy Starns Clark
In this latest work, do you have any topics useful for bibliotherapy, or therapeutic influence through reading about a disorder or situation?
Yay for bibliotherapy!  It’s a concept I strongly believe in and try to employ in all of my fiction, though I’ve never heard that term before.
In Beauty to Die For, we have three characters who grapple with serious personal challenges:
            - one dealing with a fear of abandonment
            - one working through grief and loss
            - one overcoming a childhood spent in poverty with an emotionally unstable mother
In all three situations, their paths are by no means easy, but our characters do find help and healing and growth in the end.

Thank you Mindy for agreeing to answer these questions.  Have a blessed day and keep on writing!!

A Dancing Surprise!

Constance “Gingersnap” Cavendish is the eldest daughter of a plantation owner and she's used to a luxuary life. When her father died, he left behind a lot of debts. Constance, her mother and her two sisters must work now for a living.
Because her father has swindled a lot of people, the villagers despise the Cavendish ladies and want nothing to do with them.
Constance wants to make a new start for her family, but what she had in mind is far different than what is going to happen in the rest of this story.

Constance is a dancer and she’s good at it. When she hears that the rich Beaumont family in the frontier town Charlottesville is looking for a dance instructor, she decides to go there to offer her services. Even when she finds out that she’s going to find herself in the home of her old beau Robbie—who broke her heart—she’s still determined to work for the Beaumonts and sacrifice herself for the sake of her family.
When she’s hired by the Beaumont family to teach their twin daughters to dance, she runs into the handsome Robbie on the very first day . . .

In the past five years after Robbie broke her heart, Constance could never forget him. He promised to marry her, but after her father’s death he let her down. She thought it was because her family lost all their money, but she will find out it’s something else.
What is the true reason Robbie didn’t marry her? What dark secret has he carried with him for the past five years?

Constance meets a handsome circuit riding preacher in buckskins. She is attending one of his worship services among the slaves and has never felt so much alive. Together with the slaves she is dancing her heart out for the Lord. After this she’s changed and wants to know more of God. She is spending much time with the handsome preacher. Could they possibly have a future together? Or does her heart still belong to Robbie?

This book reads like you’re going on an adventure with the lovely characters. Sometimes I felt I had to dance and praise God while reading. This book is beautifully written and shows much of God’s grace! The book had me laughing, crying, feeling sad and happy . . . I can’t remember reading the last book that aroused so many different feelings inside me.
The characters are very well developed and easy to love. I hope to see them back in a sequel, because I don’t want to say goodbye to them yet.
Very, very well done, Dina!

Guest Review by Suzie Johnson of Dina Sleiman's new release!

Love in Three-Quarter Time
By Dina Sleiman

Review by Suzie Johnson

Dina Sleiman’s historical romance, Love in Three-Quarter Time, debuted last week as the launch title for Zondervan’s new Digital First line. It’s an incredible honor to be the author of a launch title, but knowing Dina and the way she intertwines story and faith, it’s no surprise her  book is wonderful enough for this honor.

Before I tell you about the book, you need to know a little bit about Dina. Dina’s tagline is: Author of lyrical stories that dance with light.

Poetry and dancing are as much a part of her as breathing. It’s the way she expresses everything in her heart, the way she worships, the way she lives her life. This essence of Dina is evident in everything she writes. She weaves words in such a way the reader can’t help but be drawn into the lives of her characters. I found that to be true in Dance of the Dandelion, and I was delighted to find it to be true in Love in Three-Quarter Time.

Love in Three-Quarter Time is the story of Constance Cavendish, a young woman with a big heart and troubles that seem even bigger. When her father is killed and her family’s reputation is destroyed, Constance, her mother, sisters and grandmother are thrust into dire straits. And as she feels responsible for it all, Constance is desperate to come up with a way to save her family.

Having learned of a woman in Charlottesville, Virginia, who needs a dance teacher for her twin daughters’ coming-out party, Constance hopes to use her talent to spare her mother endless nights of needlework in order to feed her family. She dons a fake accent and prepares to pass herself off as a dance instructor.

Fortunately she secures the position. Unfortunately, the one person who could blow her cover is her former beau, the only man she ever dreamed of marrying.

Robbie Montgomery remembers her as a spoiled and fickle sixteen-year old. The drive to overcome hardship has changed Constance, and as she struggles to see God’s presence in her life, will Robbie be able to see her as a new creation that could very well be the woman he’s supposed to spend his life with?

Readers of romance expect a happy ending. It’s part of the genre. But getting to that happy ending is the key to the story, and the key to drawing the reader into the story is to give them an emotional experience. Dina, with the essence of dance and poetry weaving around the reader, succeeds. She’s a new talent in the world of Christian Fiction, a rising star who is now among my absolute favorites.

This book will find its way on many a Nook and Kindle virtual keeper shelf. It’s a definite must-read for historical fans, and all I can say to Dina is: Write more words FASTER. Please?

Guest Post by Dina Sleiman: Overcoming Through Dance

Dina Sleiman Dancing
Overcoming Through Dance
By Dina Sleiman, guest

I love that this blog is all about overcoming. Ultimately, we overcome through God. But along the way, there are many methods for overcoming adversity in life. One way that has meant so much to me has been dance. Dance is often seen as a metaphor for life: for the willingness to step beyond yourself, to embrace the wonder about you, to move in harmony with the universe. As joy and celebration build within, they require an outlet. And so, our hands and feet begin to move, our bodies begin to sing and flow, releasing emotions from our hearts and culminating in dance. Even releasing the heavenlies deep within through our fingertips and toes.

But what if you don’t feel that joy? What if life has beaten you down? Dance is at its core, a form of communication. You can dance your pain, your prayer, and as the music begins to overtake you, you begin to find that joy. Or you can employee the regular old, boogie-on-down kind of dancing to help you dance your blues away.

Exercise itself is a great way to chase away depression. When I’m feeling down, if I turn on a dance workout video and shake and shimmy along with the instructor, before long it’s hard to keep a smile my your face. Oxygen and endorphins alone will do that to a person, but add in some happy music and joyous expression, and you’ll have a hard time holding onto your doldrums.

Now what if we top that off with some praise and worship? Wow! Anytime we offer our praise and worship as an offering, the joy is sure to come. David danced before the Lord with all his might, and God was well pleased. Even Jesus spoke of his frustration with the generation around him by saying in Matthew 11, "We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge and you did not mourn.” Yet how often do we stifle this wondrous outlet?
Most churches today that incorporate contemporary choruses sing songs about dance. “Dance with me, oh lover of my soul.” "Dancers who dance upon injustice.” “We will dance on the streets that are golden.” “Dancing with my Father God in fields of grace.” The list goes on and on, but do we take it seriously, or do we stand still and sing the words, hampering our bodies from becoming living, breathing expressions of praise. Romans 12:1 instructs, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship." Of course this scripture has many applications, but I like to take it quite literally.

In my new historical romance, Love in Three-Quarter Time, my heroine is a dancer. Dance is one of her few sources of joy in life. Yet because of wounds from her past, she represses her true passionate nature and restricts herself to formulaic ballet and polite ballroom dances. It isn’t until she lets herself dance wild and free before a bonfire that she finally feels the full love and acceptance of her creator. In a way, her story is mine as well. In dance, I’ve found both my true self and a way to truly connect to God.

So I urge you to offer up your bodies as living sacrifices of praise. Embrace and enjoy the wonder of dance. Take time to relate with God through this amazing form of expression today. Discover the joy and overcoming power available through dance.

Bio:
In the style of Deeanne Gist, Dina Sleiman explores the world of 1817 Virginia in her novel Love in Three-Quarter Time. When the belle of the ball falls into genteel poverty, the fiery Constance Cavendish must teach the dances she once loved in order to help her family survive. The opportunity of a lifetime might await her in the frontier town of Charlottesville, but the position will require her to instruct the sisters of the plantation owner who jilted her when she needed him most. As Robert Montgomery and Constance make discoveries about one another, will their renewed faith in God help them to face their past and the guilt that threatens to destroy them in time to waltz to a fresh start?

In this nostalgic Christmas story Ace Collins leads us back in time to post-war Arkansas. There we meet 16 year old Jimmy Reed, a young man with a huge chip on his shoulder yearning to grow up and make a name for himself. But as we all know teenagers even in 1945 have been known to make wrong choices.

Jimmy Reed is trying his best to cope with the life he has been dealt; a father that died fighting a war in a foreign land, although a hero, Jimmy is angry that his father had to die. Now he watches as his mother works so very hard to try to make ends meet. All because of that day in May 1942 when they received word that Robert Reed, beloved husband and dad had been killed, nothing has been the same for Jimmy or his mother, especially Christmas, the day that used to mean the world to the Reed family. Now at Christmas instead of reading the Christmas story and happily putting up their traditional star on top of the tree his mom now put up his dad’s Congressional Medal of Honor in its place. Even hearing that his dad was a hero doesn't make it any easier.

Jimmy is struggling to do the right thing with his life and the more he hears about his father the more he feels he can never measure up especially now that he has committed to do something that will forever change his life and possibly send him to jail. When a complete stranger comes to town and tells Jimmy and his mom another unbelievable story of his father‘s courage, the more Jimmy wants to be the son his father would be proud of. Is it too late for Jimmy to change what he has done? Will Jimmy get a Christmas miracle??

The year is 1936 and Helen Meeker is a brilliant young lady aspiring to be an FBI agent in the days when women were not allowed in J. During this time there are very few leads as to what happened to Rose but guess what does show up once again? Yes, the infamous yellow Packard, could the rumors really be true, is the car cursed? Or is God using it to uncover another sinister deed long forgotten?

This is the first novel I have read by Ace, it has a good storyline. It has a lot of details that you have to pay close attention to, and a lot of twists and turns, much like sitting in that luxurious Packard, taking some hairpin turns, you know they are coming but you know it’s ok because that’s just part of the ride. It will keep you guessing, just when you think you have figured it out, there’s another hairpin turn! There is also a thread of hope and faith woven throughout the story and all that together makes for an enjoyable read. Great Job Mr. Collins!
