Murray Pura's New Release "Beneath the Dover Sky" Reviewed by Marian Baay

Beneath the Dover Sky

Reviewed by Marian Baay
~5 stars~*****

In Ashton Park we met the wealthy Danforth family; Lord William Danforth, his wife Lady Elizabeth, and their seven children. In Beneath the Dover Sky we see how their lives continue.

The Danforths worry about their daughter Catherine, who lost her husband two years ago and since that time has shown no interest in the opposite sex…but that will change soon. They also worry about Kipp’s wife, Christelle, who is dealing with some health issues. Then there’s Lady Caroline, Kipp’s former fiancĂ©e, who seems to be a dangerous temptation for him.
Libby and Michael are returning from America with a surprise, but not everyone is happy with this surprise. And something dramatic will occur that deeply affects Victoria’s and Libby’s lives.

The Danforths live in a restless time when Hitler is gaining more and more support in Germany. This also affects the political decisions that must be made in Great Britain and often is the subject of conversation between Edward and his father.

The Danforths are unique! I love them all—that doesn’t mean I agree with all their decisions, but it surely makes for a very interesting read.
I learned a lot about European history in the time between WW1 and WW2. Every time Mr. Pura amazes me with his excellent research. He certainly knows what he’s writing about and you can be sure that it’s accurate.

I very much enjoyed reading this book. There were several unexpected twists and turns that literally made me gasp, and of course that kept me turning the pages…
As always Pura’s writing touches something deep inside me. It doesn’t matter if he’s writing fiction or non-fiction—God is obviously blessing his writing.

GIVEAWAY: A book by Murray Pura of your choice and format. (International winners ebook only.) Answer the question to be entered in the contest and don't forget to leave your email address.

QUESTION: I asked Murray if he knew a nice question for the contest. So this is his question.
There is a scene in this book where the Nazis are burning books in 1933. Do you think they would have burned the book "Bambi" by Felix Salten? The book was actually written by an Austrian writer. The Disney movie came out in '42.

  3. Great review MARIAN! After having just recently read Ashton Park, I'm really looking forward to reading this!

I think there's a good chance they would have burned the book 'Bambi'. Hitler has stated that there must be nothing weak and gentle about youth and that he wants them to be brutal, domineering, fearless, and cruel. I can't see 'Bambi' fitting in with that draconian opinion!

  5. Wonderful review, MARIAN, and I really enjoyed the book trailer! Yes, I think he would have burned the book, Bambi. I'm sure the Nazi's burned every book they could get their hands on and surely were given instructions by this evil man to do so.

  7. Very interesting on Marian's review. Hitler and the Nazi would have burned the "Bambi" book. They had no hearts for the youth. Very sad to let the evil to do their part. Glad the book and the movie still exist today for the Kia to enjoy on their innocent faces.

  9. What a grand review MARIAN! I agree 100% that Murray's writing is blessed! Murray I somehow have doubts that ole hitler had a soft spot for a cute little fawn named Bambi. So I'm going out on a limb here...I going to say YES!

    1. MURRAY your question made me do my homework! lol According to a page on children's literature at the University of Minnesota website, Bambi was banned by the natzis in 1936. Maybe it had something to do with the author being Jewish?

  11. I'm going with the opposite opinion. I don't think they would have burned Bambi. After all, it has a rather communistic theme. (Ducks the hurled tomatoes.) Each according to his kind and a definite hierarchy with a superior "race".

  14. Okay, I'll take the other side of the coin. Maybe they would NOT burn it -- mother dies, the regal dad moves on (with little emotion), Bambi is left to "suck it up" and through his trials, he becomes the Dear Leader of the forest!

Oh, good golly do I want this book! Sign me up!

  15. bear in mind the Nazis also hated anything remotely like Communism

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hello, I think they would've burned the book especially if Salten was even remotely related to Jews. Even a remote connection would have been enough to have gotten the book burned. I know that my relatives in Germany had their genealogy investigated back 10 generations to make sure our family wasn't Jewish and headed for a concentration camp. I wouldn't be here then! 55. Nice review, Marian. I think they probably would have burned the book since they'd previously destroyed Hemingway and even Helen Keller and a long list of others I can't remember in an attempt to end any "moral and intellectual corruption." When we deal with the insanity of group hysteria, anything can happen. Even John Updike's books were burned, and he's one of my favorites. So, I'd say probably yes, given the circumstances and crowd mentality, they probably would have destroyed anything with a semblance of beauty. Joy Ross Davis

The Nazis probably would have burned the book, because they wanted their youth strong and heartless. They tried so hard through their youth movements there and enlisted the children into the regular army early. The Germans had to become heartless under Hitler.

  58. I read that in 1936, Bambi was banned by the ruling Nazi party because of its “political allegory on the treatment of Jews in Europe.” Many copies of the novel were burned across Nazi states, making original first editions rare and difficult to find. But the Bambi book and many other books that they burned have survived the Nazis in other countries. This sounds like a great book. I like reading books from World War II.
