My Help, Poetry by Teresa Mathews

My Help

“I will lift up my eyes unto the hills”
I’ve heard these words before
But until today I counted them but lore.

The beauty of those spoken words
Never touched my heart so much
Until I needed your strength and your mighty touch.

The thought of a mighty God looking out for me
Seemed so far-fetched and out of place
Until to me in love He extended His grace.

He sent His son to die for me
That I could truly live
Seems so much more than anyone should ever have to give.

Now when I look unto those hills
I completely understand
My help is found in God alone, not in earthly man.

  1. I love this poem, TERESA. So many times we have an empty space that we try to fill up with friends and family or a problem we try to gloss over with FB, books, shopping, etc. (not that there's anything wrong with these things.) But when it's all said and done the emptiness and the problem is still there. We forget many times to "lift our eyes unto the hills from whence cometh our help" and bear many needless problems and hurts b/c of it. Friends, books, and shopping can fill the void temporarily, but Jesus is the permanent solution. Let us look unto the hills...

    1. AMEN DIANA! It's easy to look to man and the things of this world for what we need when Jesus is ALL that we will ever need! When we put Him first in our lives then the rest just falls into place. Thanks for the beautiful words this morning. :)

  3. Love this Teresa.....such depth, honesty, beauty, and love filled sentiments expressed that truly touch me. There is also a deep respect, appreciation, and reverence in these words that honor Abba God and show why He is so worthy. Thank you for this wonderful poem as we go through the season of Lent in preparation for Easter, perfectly stated :)

Hugs and blessings to you my friend and may God Almighty continue to rain down His favor, presence, and miracles upon you and your family!

  4. So wonderful the way you put words together Teresa---I see God's hand around yours as you compose. This one really speaks to my heart because I have always loved that Psalm. The hills hold nothing but God holds everything in the palm of His hand. I feel blessed to read what you have penned. Blessings! Darlene

  7. I loved your poem Teresa! It is so simple,so true and something we all need to learn. I needed this today and I am so thankful you shared it.
I have been signing the song....The Lord is, A strong tower, the righteous run into and they are saved....oh without Him I am nothing..I cannot make it on my own. It is by His strength...oh what a mighty God that cares so much about His people...to help us even when we don't deserve it. I love the fact He is on my side...He is my help...He is our help!
    Thank you again =)

    1. JOHNETTE I have been singing that same song this week. It has been rainy and dreary for the last couple days here in SC and I was complaining about it when I stopped and said I guess we need it, and I started singing that song. I Love It!

  12. I LOVE this poem of yours TERESA!! How often do we give ourselves headaches when we have problems, instead of going immediately to our Creator?! The One who has told us to cast our anxieties upon Him because He cares for us?! Your poem is a great reminder to bring everything to Him, both big AND small, because He REALLY does care for us so much!!
    God bless you!

    1. NOELA I'm glad you enjoyed this. Aren't we humans silly for forgetting where our help comes from? I am so thankful we have a loving and forgiving Father that will wait on us with open arms to tun to Him. :)
