Congo Dawn

Reviewed by Marian Baay

Former Marine Lieutenant Robin Duncan is on a mission in the Congo to track down an insurgent killer. This killer is known by the name Jini—which means Ghost because he seems invisible. Robin is the translator with the security team that is tracking down this Jini. She has taken this job because she needs the money to pay her little niece’s surgery.

Five years ago Robin served with the Marines in Afghanistan. Her brother also served there and they became best friends with Michael Stewart—an army medic. During an attack Robin’s brother was wounded, but according to Michael it was not serious and Robin’s brother would be alright.
When Robin also got wounded and was in coma her brother died. From that time on she is furious with Michael for letting him die.
Five years have passed without a word from Michael. Robin is certain he feels guilty for letting her brother die.
Now she’s in the Congo standing eye to eye with Michael again…

Michael got severely wounded in the same attack in Afghanistan—therefore he couldn’t take care of Robin’s brother. While recovering from his injuries Michael didn’t hear anything from Robin. After several attempts to contact her, with disappointing results, he gave up. He thought there was more between him and Robin, but apparently he was wrong.
Now Michael is working for Doctors Without Borders in the Congo and after five years he is seeing Robin back again.

When they find out what happened in Afghanistan, will they believe and forgive each other? Will Robin and her team track down Jini in time, before it is too late for her little niece? What obstacles and shocking discoveries lie ahead of Robin?
When Robin is seeing all the suffering around her in the village, she can hardly believe that the people put so much trust in God. Their songs of praise are reminding her of her childhood, and make her think of God. Will Robin learn to put her trust in Jesus?

Jeanette Windle is a talented writer. She creates a believable story with a strong mission. A must read for lovers of suspense books that take place in a country with a turbulent political background.

  2. Great review MARIAN!! Lol, I wish I could be in the draw, this story sounds fabulous! It will def be put high on my To Get list!

Yes I've had to learn to trust people again, it takes effort for sure, and time, but it can be done, especially with God's help! There is one person however that I've learnt 'not' to trust after way too many heartbreaks, but that is only because the issue is not acknowledged or dealt with.

    1. Thanks for stopping by ROSEMARY! JEANETTE'S book sure does sound like such an interesting read doesn't it?!! And I agree, MARIAN did a wonderful job reviewing it! :)

Sometimes, it can pay to be a little skeptical and cautious which I've learnt to do as well, but it is also freeing to be able to trust again!

  4. I find it hard to give trust, so it's harder to betray me and for me to have to overcome it - just 'cause not everyone gets the chance.

I try to separate the intentional, malice-borne betrayal from the "oh, cr-p, I didn't mean to do that" or "oh my, it had additional consequences" kind.

BUT it pains me to ever find out I've been on the other side of the equation, to have been given trust and then to blow it.

P.S. The title of the book drew me in, the review made me stay.

    1. So glad to hear you enjoyed the review ANDREW! I really liked how you put it in your comment. :)

You're right about there being different kinds of betrayal, and we do need to be wise about it as it helps US in the long run if we have dealt with it with grace and wisdom.

  5. What an exciting review of what sounds like an awesome book, Marian! Love the setting!

I have had to go through the process many times of trusting and forgiving people after they have done me wrong. However, some people you can forgive but it may not be wise to trust them again! We must be wise as serpents and harmless as doves -- the Bible says in Matthew 10:16. (KJV)

  6. MARIAN, you're killing me with these reviews that are making my TBR grow exponentially! I don't have time to read so many books :)

Certain people in my life I have learned are not to be trusted. That's so sad to say but true.

  7. Great review of what sounds like a great book and I agree with Anne--I don't have enough time to read all these wonderful books, plus all the others that are already in my iPad Kindle reader.

Learned to trust someone who betrayed me? Hmm...like others said, I can generally forgive someone fairly easily (most times), however, it is quite difficult (and maybe wise) to tread softly when trying to trust again. I guess it comes down to trusting God to protect you and let you know when it is safe and when it is not...

    1. I agree, VICKI! That's when the Spirit of discernment kicks in and let's us know to back off -- forgive, but back off. Thank God for His protection!

And like I mentioned to ANNE above...what's one more book? lol You can never have too many -- kinda like shoes. :)

  8. All right, Marian, another great review! Truly, I sooo enjoy your perspective on these book reviews :) This one sounds intense and suspenseful, but also love the theme of learning to trust Jesus and praising Him even in the midst of suffering. LOVE the cover on this one also! I learn something from each author on this blog and I'm grateful for the thoughtful reviews :)
    Hugs and blessings Marian!

PS. Trusting someone is a gift and after a person has hurt me I'm happy to forgive, but can't think of one example where I've learned to trust that individual again. I'm sure it's possible and happens every day, but I can't relate. God bless those who are able to to accomplish this because second chances are also a gift :)

LOL to Anne's comment! I agree with you and Vicki!! There's always room for another book or two, just have to find the time to read them all :)

    1. I'm not feeling very well at the moment, so your words are encouraging to me, Kara. :)

I have learned to trust again and I've been on the other side of it. I'm thankful for the person I hurt most but decided to trust me again. Only possible with God's help! And I can say it makes me so grateful to receive that trust again.

  10. Unfortunately I've had to learn to trust someone who betrayed me. Not an easy task at all. Sounds like a wonderful book. Plan to share on FB, so I can let others have an opportunity to win as well. Blessings to all, Susan Fryman susanngarrylee@yahoo.com

  11. SUSAN it is very hard to trust once we have been hurt. But with God's help we can do the impossible. Thank you for spreading the word about this terrific book. :)

  13. This sounds awesome! I couldn't trust a girl that was one of my good friends after she lied repeatedly to my other friends and me. She wouldn't admit what she had done so we couldn't trust her anymore. shopgirl152nykiki(at)yahoo(dot)com

  14. forgiveness and trust are both very hard! But the Lord says if we can't forgive then He doesn't forgive us. Takes awhile for me to gain that trust back. but I know I have to forgive and forget it or I'm not following the Lord! Would love to read this book.
