Marian Baay Carla Stewart Stardust

Review by Marian Baay
4 stars ****

In Stardust we travel back to the 1950s. Georgia’s husband has left her for another woman. After two months his body is found in the swamp. Now she’s a widow and she needs to take care of her two daughters alone.

Georgia was raised by an aunt. Her parents left her at the Stardust motel when she was 3 years old. Her aunt doesn’t want to tell her the reason why her parents left her there. While growing up Georgia often found refuge at the Stardust. Paddy and Doreen ran the place and loved her like a daughter. When Paddy dies he leaves the Stardust to Georgia. Doreen tells her that the answer to her past is hidden in the Stardust.

Her aunt doubts that she can run the place as a single mother. Besides it’s dangerous for a woman alone to run a highway motel. Soon her mother-in-law moves in one of the cabins of the Stardust. Then a stranger named Peter also comes to the Stardust and asks for an job. Peter is helping Georgia with repairs. Georgia grows to like him and people start talking behind her back. Then a pregnant woman and her young daughter come to the Stardust. The woman is sick and needs to go to the hospital. While she’s there Georgia takes care of the woman’s daughter. But then Georgia finds out who the woman is...

Can she forgive the woman for ruining her life?
And when she finds out the truth about her parents, can she forgive her aunt for keeping the truth from her?

Peter gets a phone call from a woman and needs to leave immediately. Is there another woman in his life, or will he come back for her? Can Georgia let go of her hurtful past and focus on a new life with people she loves in the Stardust?

Carla Stewart knows how to make you feel at home with her characters. A well written novel!

  1. What a great review, MARIAN! You certainly left me guessing. I'm sorry I'm so late getting here; just finished a review myself...imagine that! Thanks for the awesome review, MARIAN!

  2. Thanks Diana! This was one of my first reviews last year (I've read the book LONG before it was published--Oct. 2011).
I was probably sweating writing this review. LOL

  4. LOL! That's cute, MARIAN. I still sweat them, especially when writing one for the great Lena N. Dooley! This morning I said, "Help me, Lord!" And He did. :)

  6. Marian!!! How could you?! Now I have to add another book to my TBR :0)

I think this might be one of the most suspenseful reviews I've read and I am pretty sure this isn't a suspense book! Way to go, girl!

  8. I agree, ANNE! I mentioned on fb that it was an intriguing review, but I don't think the book is an intriguing suspense. You go, MARIAN!

  10. DIANA, sometimes I have a review in 15 minutes and sometimes it takes me an hour. They certainly come easier now I'm used to writing English.

So, when will we read your Leny Dooley review?

  11. MURRAY, thanks for coming by. You're trying your luck again this week? :))

  12. At the end of the month, I think. Depends on if CARRIE shifts schedule around on the blog. :)

  13. ANNE, I just reread my review and I think you're right that this is a suspenseful review. I didn't do this on purpose though... ;

  14. DIANA, looking forward to read your review. You're the best!

  15. Thank you, MARIAN! You're too sweet. I love reading yours, as well! Like you say, some reviews come easier than others and the words just flow. And some of mine are definitely better than others...that's the way it goes. Some I'm not as thrilled with, but I always try my best!

  16. MARIAN Wonderful review...I had seen this book on amazon and wanted to read it. Now after reading your review I KNOW I have to read it! :)

You amaze me at how well you write, I have been speaking/writing English all my life and I still have problems with it! LOL! Maybe it's just the southerner coming out in me.

  17. DIANA, yeah, I also wrote some reviews that I don't like at all. I liked the book, but couldn't write a nice review. I just leave it and hope the next review is better then.

  18. MARIAN...BTW I meant that as a compliment about your writing. Some visitors on the blog might not know you are from the Netherlands, your writing is perfect!

  19. TERESA, well I hope you'll like the book. The cover is very lovely, don't you think?

Thanks for the compliment. I try my best to write good English, but I'm sure I'm making mistakes so now and then. DIANA told me once that Americans make mistakes too, so that made me feel a little bit better. :))

  20. MARIAN, that's about all we can do!

TERESA-you're fine as long as you have your grits for breakfast. lol! When I moved here 23 yrs. ago, I could not stand those things. Now I love them, especially with scrambled eggs, and they would be really good with one of Carla's books on the side!

  21. On boy, do Americans ever make mistakes, Maid Marian.

  22. Yes the cover is beautiful.. I love the gloves. I remember as a little girl mom had gloves like that she wore for Easter Sunday.

  23. Oh my goodness! Love all your wonderful comments, and your great review, Marian! You did a wonderful job of building the suspense. I want readers to be guessing what's going to happen next, so in some ways, all books are suspenseful. And I would never know you are new to writing English.

For all of you, this book was so much fun to write. Some of the characters who showed up surprised me. I wish you all could win!

And thanks for the comment about the cover, Teresa. My publisher does a wonderful job, and I was so happy w/ their choice of the dress and the gloves.

Have a blessed day, everyone! So glad to be here!

  29. It sounds like this book has some interesting characters. Forgiveness is something most of us struggle with so I like reading books with this theme. I'd love to win a copy of Stardust. Thanks.

  33. Pam and Karen - wishing you the best in the drawing. Sometimes I think I write things that are hard for me, too - like forgiving. Really forgiving and not just smoothing things over. My characters teach me a lot.
