Audiobooks: Carrie Fancett Pagels' Picks Summer Listens

Most of mine are not new summer releases.  It takes a tad longer to get them on audiobook, my preferred mode of reading.

Tamera Alexander's "Within My Heart" was amazing and my top audiobook listen this spring.  I highly recommend it if you have not already read this book.  Am going to try another of hers,  "A Lasting Impression."

Jill Marie Landis's Irish Angels (reconstructionist Louisiana) orphans series, Zondervan.  I finished the third book, am listening to the first now, "Heart of Glass" and plan to download the middle book, "Heart of Lies" in June. Excellent series so far!

Just finished Dan Walsh's first two audiobooks. Great listens!

Karen Witemeyer's upcoming release "Short Straw Bride."  I finished the last, "To Win Her Heart", which was super.

Vannetta Chapman's "A Perfect Square." If this ends up like the first audiobook, it will be one with "sticking" power.

Kim Vogel Sawyer's "Courting Miss Amsel" was great - just finished it.  So I downloaded "Song of My Heart" for this summer.  It released on audiobook in late February, 2012.

Robin Lee Hatcher's "Belonging" is one I downloaded recently through audible.com. She has an awesome testimony.  Can't wait to hear what her books sound like.

Are you listening to any audiobooks this summer?  What do you have planned?

Giveaway:  We have one more drawing to go - for a copy of MaryLu Tyndall's Veil of Pearls.  Leave a comment for a chance to win.

  1. I haven't listened to a fiction audiobook. I only listened to The Life and Diary of David Brainerd on mp3 cd. It was great to listen while we were driving in our car. But I'm not someone who will easily listen to a book when I'm at home. I prefer to read.
But I'm glad there are audiobooks for people who can't read very well.

  2. I'm currently reading Short-Straw Bride and it's wonderful, probably my favorite of Karen Witemeyer's so far! I've also got A Lasting Impression on my kindle that I'm planning to read soon and absolutely can't wait for Veil of Pearls!

  4. my aunt has had a cerebral hemorrhage, and lost almost all her site, she love's to read, but is not able to any more. I think I would make her very happy with an audio book. :)

  5. LIZ, how did you manage to snag a copy? Are you an advance reviewer? It doesn't show as releasing until June 1.I am wondering how long it will take to get it to audiobook. I am glad to hear this is really good!

  6. MARIAN, does that hold for Dutch books, too? I was wondering if it was because of listening to an English recording. My French is not so good, but I can read far better than I could ever understand by listening, especially with the various accents.

  7. MIRJAM, yes - make your aunt happy and get her an audiobook!

  8. CARRIE, I never read or want to listen to a Dutch fiction book. The only Dutch book I read is the Bible. LOL
I watch American movies without subtitles, so as long they don't talk too fast or with a heavy accent I can understand it all.

  9. I tried listening to an audiobook once or twice and it wasn't for me. I enjoy the print books the most :)

I have a few of Tamera's books, but haven't been able to read them yet. Within My Heart sounds amazing!

I am also looking forward to Karen Witemeyer's Short-Straw Bride (what a title). I loved To Win Her Heart, another awesome title! She just gets what it takes to draw out her reader's emotions and her stories capture mine every time :)
Way to go Liz for already getting a copy!

I have yet to get my hands on Vannetta Chapman's Falling to Pieces and A Perfect Square, but they're both on my TBR list.
Lots of talented authors and wonderful books mentioned here, love comparing them to my own book collection :)

Please enter me for Veil of Pearls and thanks so much for the giveaway!
    Blessings ladies, Kara

  10. KARA, It is so much quicker for normal sighted folks to just read a book. But with my trifocals and all the hours I spend typing on the computer, audiobooks are the thing for me. I listen while I am doing housework. Vannetta's new book is starting out great. I am listening to three at the same time right now, lol! Oh, don't miss Within My Heart - especially if you also write. Am gonna go check out your Blogger profile and see. Blessings!

  11. I hear ya, Carrie, and you get more done listening to books while housecleaning than I do just reading! Three at once, WOW! That's so cool :) I do love to write; you've convinced me to get Within My Heart, it's definitely on my TBR (to be read) list! Love sharing these books with you here, it blesses me tremendously :)

  12. Yes, and you even have an English degree it looks like KARA! WMH is great as a study in craft, too, not just as a great book. I want to listen to it again or maybe get the book and see how it looks on paper.

  13. Carrie, I wish I was an advance reviewer! I wasn't expecting it till June either but walked into my local book store the other day and there it was screaming my name (I may have squealed a little) =P It really is GREAT so far!!!

  14. My husband listens to audiobooks all the time, but since I work so close to home, my drive isn't as long as his. I like doing it though and need to check some out of the library.

I love the cover of Veil of Pearls!!!!

  15. Carrie, great list! I think I have read most of Tamera's books, but may have missed this one, am not sure, it's been awhile. Will have to go to Amazon and read the blurb. One of Tamera's (From a Distance) will be free on Kindle June 1 and 2, so everyone needs to keep their eyes peeled for that one.

I have just now been able to get back on internet since yesterday eve, so coming in on a slow freight on the blog today. :( I have all of J. M. Landis's series (the one that you mentioned, CARRIE) on Kindle and need to get started on that as soon as I get caught up on Net Galley reviews that are nearing release date.

  16. MARIAN, you are funny! I would think you'd want to give your eyes a rest some time, lol!

    ReplyDelete
  17. LIZ, I shared that with Karen on FB. I will await the audiobook!

  18. SHERRINDA, my hubby does too but lots of times I have to pick them up for him. He works a lot and a long commute and insists on doing the yard work, too. Plus he runs our son to scouts, etc.

Our library keeps a pretty good collection of CDs but like elsewhere, the economy cut the new purchases.

  19. ACK! DIANA - help me remember to put my NetGalley info up. Gosh, I can't even remember whose I read from there. Maybe I better stick with my audible.com reviews, like I planned!!!

  20. I have never listen to an audiobook but have always wanted to.

The only book I've read by Tamara Alexander is A Lasting Impression and I thought it beautifully written.
I agree with Liz R, Short Straw Bride, is my favorite from Karen Witemeyer so far.
I am eager to read Veil of Pearls this summer.

  21. Oh, oh, MARIAN, I think Carrie has blown it with Net Galley! lol! Go to Net Galley where it says manage your reviews at the top, CARRIE, and all the books you have gotten from Net Galley will be there and it will refresh your memory...maybe. ;)

She is so fun to pick at, MARIAN! LOL

  40. The only book I've ever listened to on audio is the Bible. From January to April, I would sit and sew (pillowcase dresses for a mission project) and listen to the New Testament on my headphones. It was a great time to listen to an audio book... I wasn't as distracted as I would normally be.

  41. Historicals are very popular right now. I've been reading a lot of them lately and sadly, I grew weary of them. It seemed that I kept selecting historicals with similar plotlines. So when I picked up Within My Heart by Tamara Alexander, I groaned and said "Another historical." Thankfully, that sentiment didn't last long. Within five pages, I realized that this was not just another historical.

Alexander masterfully creates the world of Rachel Boyd and Dr. Rand Brookston. Rachel is a widower raising two boys and trying to run her and her late husband's ranch. Dr. Rand Brookston is the doctor for the small town of Timber Ridge but has dreams of being more.

This book was full of unique twists and turns that it sets it in a different category than other historicals. Most books I've read focus more a specific time period, but Within My Heart presents wonderful characters and engaging storylines. Alexander portrays death in dying in a way I don't think I've ever seen in Christian fiction. She tells the story of loss that presents a perfect balance between sadness and hope.
