Bibliotherapy Review of A Heart Revealed by Julie Lessman

A Heart Revealed
Winds of Change Series, Book Three
(Revell, 2011)

Review by Carrie Fancett Pagels

5 Stars *****

Emma Malloy is a survivor. She wears her wedding ring like a talisman to protect her against men, having been abused by the man who put the ring there. He even scarred her face during a drunken rage.  She doesn’t trust a man who can’t control his temper. But her deep shame has finally caught up with her when her young friend falls in love with a man as bad as Rory Malloy had been. Emma is a deeply spiritual woman who has compartmentalized her marriage as a way of coping with her intense distress over the reality of the relationship.

(SPOILER ALERTS)
Sean has demons of his own. He loves Emma, but she keeps him at arm’s length. And another young woman, his boss’s daughter, won’t leave him alone.  When she corners him in his office, he ends up losing his job.

A son in the O’Connor family, Sean is guilty over failing to protect his sister from their uncle’s abuse when they were young. A veteran of WWI, he lost a love and a child. He doesn’t want to be hurt again. But God’s plan is different than Sean’s.

Julie's tagline is "Passion with a Purpose" and this story is no exception.  She's not afraid to include multiple character's storylines and we get an update, in this book, on the characters from the earlier two books in this series.

Bibliotherapy: This book rivals Jennifer Hudson Taylor’s latest release for bibliotherapy elements.
We have: results of physical abuse, sexual abuse (back story - implied, not on the page), commitment to vows, shame, alcoholism, trauma, scarring, ability to control anger, overcoming the past, and even mental instability brought on by repression of the truth.
I can think of MANY people who would benefit from this wonderful and deep story about God’s restorative power in the hearts of two traumatized individuals who love and respect one another, a bottom line basis for every marriage.
This is a great example of how compartmentalization as a coping mechanism cannot hold up under scrutiny when the Holy Spirit convicts a believer.

I really loved this story and Julie is such a master of charactization and story that I almost feel as though these characters are real people!  Bravo, Julie!!!

  1. This one is one book I'm looking forward to reading. I've read the rest of Julie's books, just not this one. Though I think that by the time I get to read this one, I'm going to have to go back and read the others.

  4. WOW, Carrie!! Who knew there were that many bibliotherapy components to my novel??? Not me, that's for sure, so thanks for opening my eyes!! It's amazing how the Holy Spirit gets His points across to those who need them in Christian books of every genre.

And I want to thank you SO much for hosting me this week, along with Diana, Teresa and Kim for their wonderful reviews -- you guys have blessed the socks off of me, which is hard to do because I don't wear any!! :)

    Love you ALL!!!

  5. LOL, DAWN ... you just may have to do that, girl, you know??? I actually reread all my books in August before the next one comes out so that I can realllllly get in the O'Connor mode to prime the pump for the next novel. Kind of a tradition of mine. :)

Anyway, have a great weekend, and here's to a win!

    Hugs,

  6. CHRISTINA!!! Oh, me too, girl -- want you to read this book, that is!! Well, here's hoping this is your chance, and if not here, I have one more giveaway listed on my website calendar this week, so be sure to check it out, okay? Plus there will be a new excerpt from Steven's story in it ... ;)

  7. Hey, thanks WREN!! Appreciate your confidence in me and I hope AHR doesn't disappoint. Keep in mind that the romance is A LOT slower than in my other books where sparks usually fly between hero and heroine right off the bat. Since Sean and Emma's relationship is a ten-year friendship that slowly ripens into a forbidden love, I had to take it reallllly slow. But trust me, Luke and Katie and Charity and Mitch MORE than make up for it in the sparks department. :)

    Good luck, sweetie!

    Hugs,
    Julie

  9. Julie, that's why I love Carrie's reviews so much! I told her that she sees and brings out things in books that others don't (including me), and I love it!

Julie, thank you so much for celebrating with us this week! It's been such a blast! May God continue to richly bless you and your writing!

  10. MARISSA!!! Music to my ears, darlin', and bibliotherapy to my soul -- THANK YOU and good luck in the contest!!

DIANA ... Carrie reviews like NO ONE ELSE on the Web, which is SO incredible. It's one of the very first things that drew me to her -- I guess because I need so much therapy!! :)

It's been an absolute joy to be with you guys this week, truly.

  11. I loved Emma and Sean's friendship into romance story so much! Especially the surprise of how it resolved! And I so enjoy Charity! She says and does all the outrageous things I'm too afraid to say & do! The O'Connor family has my heart!

  14. I totally LOVED Sean & Emma's story! Can't wait for the next one. Julie keeps teasing us with little snippets. Now we have Marcy & Patrick's story to look forward to as well!

Keep on writing, Julie! We love you!

Don't put me in the draw! I have all your books and would love someone else to have a chance to win one!

  15. CATHY, me too! I am planning on downloading all the other books to my Kindle. A lot of times I only get to read outside my subgenre (colonial and early American romance) if I am not feeling good. Well, worse than usual, having RA. But it is always good to know that if I do feel bad I can read something great that I haven't already read.

  16. SUSAN, in the first Julie Lessman book that I read I was struck by Marcie and Patrick's story. I loved that Julie was putting a more mature (and passionate!) couple in the story. One of the reasons I loved this book, too!

  19. I'm really looking forward to A Love Surrendered but I have to say like Susan I'm especially excited to read Marcie and Patrick's story. From what I know of it so far from reading this series and Daughters of Boston it's sure to be far from boring!

Can we be entered for A Love Surrendered? If not please don't enter me as I already have all of Julie's books on my keepers shelf. ;-)

  25. CATHY SAID: "And I so enjoy Charity! She says and does all the outrageous things I'm too afraid to say & do!"

LOL, CATH, me too, only I DO tend to say some of the outrageous things Charity says (and does!) at times, which gets me into trouble, I'm afraid. It's SO much easier to let Charity take the fall for my quirky personality, but I gotta say, the woman is a hoot!

And THANK YOU for your kind words, ESPECIALLY your comment about the surprise ending, although the credit goes to God, not me. I was sitting on my lower deck one day, frustrated because I could see no resolution to Sean and Emma's situation except for the obvious, so I remember saying to God something like, "Well, this is one book where I won't be able to surprise anybody, God, but I sure would like to, so if you have an idea, can you please send it my way?"

Would you believe not ten seconds passed before the idea for the surprise ending floated into my mind like the autumn leaves drifting from the trees overhead? I actually sat straight up in the chair at the time and laughed out loud, totally blown away by the goodness of God ... AND His amazing creativity!! And, I am happy to say that not ONE person has guessed the ending that I know of so far, even though my agent made me go back to weave subtle hints throughout including one giant one at mid-book because she was afraid it would be a shock that would upset too many readers. The truth is that I simply could NOT write these books without God's help, and it is as simple as that! :)

Thank you SO much for coming by, Cathy, even though you had no intention of entering the contest since you have all my books already. The thing is, however, that you do NOT have all of my books, at least not Steven's due out in September, so if you win ... and yes, Carrie, please keep Cath in the contest ... I will send you A Love Surrendered when it comes out, okay?

Sooooo appreciate your support, my friend, and don't know if you are interested in entering another contest for a $25 gift card and a signed copy of A Love Surrendered, but if you are, you'll find all the info at the following link:

  26. CARRIE, LOL ... well, if the review fits ... ;) No, you silly goose, it means you are TOTALLY unique in what you do, a true original!

And you said, "Love clogs and slip ons." I'm a moccasin/flip-flop type of girl myself, but we are sisters with the socks thing. I am WAY too warm of a woman to ever wear socks. Blame it on the hormone thing if you will, but I even have to stick one foot out of the covers at night or I will DIE!!

SUE!!! Soooo good to see you here, my friend, and this contest IS open to International, and you don't have A Love Surrendered yet, do you??? Can't remember if you won it already (you usually do!:)), but if not, consider yourself entered, okay?

And, Sue, did you receive my newsletter I sent out this week, I hope? If not, PLEASE let me know. And there is a contest in there that I mentioned above in my comment to Cathy, so PLEASE check that link out as well,

  27. CARRIE, I am SO bummed you are not feeling well, my friend, and that your nasty RA is acting up. Saying one for you RIGHT NOW!!

Oh, I soooo relate to your feelings about having an older couple like Marcy and Patrick sharing the romantic limelight!! I'm 61 going on 17, and quite frankly, I get REAL sick and tired of the young kids getting all the attention. Baby Boomers are VERY active and passionate people, so who says romance is only for the young??? My hubby and I are MORE romantic today than ever before, so much so that my 24-year-old daughter made the comment on Facebook once: "I'm really thrilled my parents have one of the best marriages on the planet, but sometimes their public displays of affection around the house make me want to hurl."

Not only that, Carrie, but Revell told me Marcy and Patrick's romance was one of the things they liked best about the book, so we are not alone.

    Hugs,
    Julie

  28. TAMMY ... oh, girl, then we just HAVE to get this book in your hot, little hands, now don't we?? I'll tell you what ... if you enter the contest I gave the link for above in my comment to Cathy, I will be happy to send you A Heart Revealed instead of ALS if you want. Or ... you may just win it here!! Good luck!

Oh, CARRIE!!! I am excited for you to read A Passion Denied because most people like that book as well as A Passion Most Pure, if not more, so I hope you like it too. John Brady is my Billy Graham hero with a dark, dark secret that was even darker before my editor made me lighten it up!! ;) Happy reading, my friend and THANK YOU for your incredible support.

But I feel SUCH an anointing when I write this book, which tells me it should be good ... I hope! :| Thanks for coming by, Renee, and GOOD LUCK!!

  30. It was a wonderful week with Julie Lessman, Laura Frantz and Julie Klassen hanging around here!

I've read a lot and learned that JULIE Lessman loves to talk and that's why she writes novels with so many pages.
JULIE I know one thing for sure and that is that you talk a lot more than I do!! :))

  31. Thank you for the give away. Would love to win a copy of the book. With the spoiler alerts I did not read the review. I have not read the first two books, but will be starting Hope Undaunted soon.

  32. MARIAN, It was a FABULOUS week with JULIE LESSMAN, Julie Klassen, and Laura Frantz. Julie is a spunky gal who is fantastic to talk with in person or online!!! Hope we did not work her too hard by putting up three posts this week!

  33. SHARON, our Laura Frantz winner earlier in the week!!! Yes, better not to read spoilers if you are gonna read the book, lol! DIANA says she always does, though!

  34. JULIE, that makes me love Revell even more, knowing that they enjoyed the Marcy-Patrick romance. Our 22-year-old seems pretty happy with us being so kissy-face but she went through a phase in her early teen years of being highly disapproving of PDAs! Yeah, why should the young people get all the romance?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I can't help it, Carrie! It's like telling a little kid not to get in the cookie jar and when your back is turned, where do they go? If you tell me spoiler alert my eyes automatically go there. lol I'm pathetic!

When my daughter was staying with us, she always said, "Brother, you guys act like you're teenagers." Hey, better than arguing and fussing! I loved Marcy and Patrick...but maybe the younger women reading the book went yuk, I don't know. Although I don't drink, they say fine wine only gets better with age...so we're not getting older we're getting better!

  36. Carrie, I just love your great bibliotherapy reviews!

  39. CARLA, thank you! Most people just go "huh?" lol! There was SO much in this book that could minister to people through reading about God's healing power in the characters' lives.

  41. MARIAN SAID: "I've read a lot and learned that JULIE Lessman loves to talk and that's why she writes novels with so many pages."

LOL ... believe it or not, I do shut up at times, you little brat, just not on blogs or in books ... ;)

Actually, I will go all day sometimes without talking much at all, unless my hubby comes to see me in the hearth room (where I write in the winter) or downstairs on the lower deck where I write in spring/summer/fall, in which case I will close my laptop and talk with him. BUT ... it's mostly listening because my mind is usually miles and miles away in either Boston or San Francisco!

Okay ... shutting up now! :)

    Hugs,
    Julie

    ReplyDelete
  42. SHARON SAID: "With the spoiler alerts I did not read the review."

Oh, girl, I like you already because it drives me CRAZY when people skip to the end of the book to find out how it ends, so the fact you didn't read Carrie's review because of the spoiler alert impresses me!

I have one reader friend that I literally had to threaten because she ALWAYS gets so nervous during my books (not knowing what's coming next), that she had a bad habit of flipping to the end to calm herself. Fortunately, I do believe I finally broke her of that by the third book ... or so she says ... :)

I know that Carrie was kind enough to send you A Hope Undaunted, so I hope you enjoy it. It's my FAVE of all my books and was listed on Booklists' Top Ten Inspirational Fiction List for 2010, so hopefully you will like it too. Fingers crossed!!

    Happy reading!

    Hugs,
    Julie

  43. Ah, CARRIE ... a woman after my own heart!! And a kissy-facer as well -- YAY!! Passion is one of God's greatest gifts to mankind, stemming from His own endless passion for each of us in sending His Son to ransom the world. I suspect passion in marriages AND in our love affair with Him is EXACTLY what He is looking for from us!!

DIANA ... would you believe that the young gals who read my book LOVE Marcy and Patrick??? I cannot tell you HOW many e-mails I have gotten from young women (teens through 20s), telling me that my books have SO encouraged them that passion does continue in a marriage and that with Christ in the center, marriages just get better and better and better! And to be honest, I am LIVING PROOF because my hubby and I have been married almost 34 years and seriously grow more in love with each other every single day!! I like to joke that I am living my own personal romance novel ... uh, which probably why I write such passionate books!

    Hugs,
    Julie

    ReplyDelete
  44. That is SO sweet, Julie. I feel the same way after 24 years and am a little scared of it getting any better, lol! I remember friends telling us that when we got married and it was such an encouragement to me and so true. I can keep my hands off my husband - I just don't want to, lol!

  46. Well, I think I have my reviews of at least the last two books of all our author friends posted on GoodReads, B&N, CBD, and Amazon. Still am behind from working on that three book proposal last year and the novella proposal. My next proposal should go out this week and it has not been the angst-ridden one the last was. I put all my emotions about my mother dying into Soul's Journey - Escape from Versailles in which my character Suzanne has lost both mother and father early in the story. If that book gets published, no one can say I didn't know what it felt like to have lost both parents. Diana went through this about the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Carrie, good luck on your proposal. I hope your books get published! I think is great when authors write from experience since I am a firm believer that God does use what we go through to help others and relate to them better. I think I could relate to your book since I know what it is like to have lost both of my parents. It doesn't matter how young or old the hurt is the same.

    ReplyDelete
  48. CARRIE, thank you SOOO much for posting all of your reviews!! I read an article in Publisher's Weekly talking about how important good reviews were to an author on sites like Amazon and CBD, so I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!

And Soul's Journey sounds wonderful if you were able to pour your own grief into the story. I find that doing that with situations in our lives REALLy brings passion and emotion to a novel. And don't say "if" that book gets published, but "when," because it's just a matter of time. I hope you lay hands on those proposals before you send them out, girl ... :)

    Hugs,
    Julie

  49. JEN SAID: "I think it's great when authors write from experience since I am a firm believer that God does use what we go through to help others and relate to them better."

Oh, AMEN TO THAT, Jen!! I would say 95% of what I write is based on things I have learned or experienced in my life. And It's so weird that all four of us -- Carrie, Diana, you and I all have lost a parent or both. My mom died when I was sixteen and my dad when I was twenty-three, but most people have both parents well into the retirement years.

Jen, you seem awfully young to have lost both of your parents -- I am so sorry, but I certainly relate.

    Hugs,
    Julie

    ReplyDelete
  50. My dad died when I was 12 and my mom when I was 15. It is kind of weird that we all have that in common, but at the same time it gives us other people who can relate to it. Many people have no idea what it is like, because you are right that many people have both parents around for most of their lives. I know God has a plan for me and had a reason for why I lost my parents, and I know that I would not be who I am today if I had not gone through my trials. It sure does not mean it is easy and there are still days that I really miss them. God really blessed me with a hubby that has a great family who all love me. I never knew any of my grandparents so when I married him I finally knew what it was like to have grandparents and so much more.

  53. Carrie,
It's so funny to read about you're children not liking the kissy-face, my husband and I are also like that, and I think it's a good thing I live in Europe, my kids don't mind (17 and 21 years old) . When I was young and thought of what my husband must be like one of the things was that he must like to cuddle and kiss-face haha.

    ReplyDelete
  54. JEN ... WOW, you were a young age to experience such a trauma -- I am so very sorry! But God IS sooo very faithful, like you said with your comment: "God really blessed me with a hubby that has a great family who all love me." Same here, although I know the missing of one's own parents still niggles. BUT ... we will see them again one day in the presence of God, and my, what a reunion that will be!!

SANDY ... thank you SO much for your kind words. I hope I can "blow you away" with the final installment in September, so thank you for entering this contest and the Family Fiction one, and GOOD LUCK!!

MIRJAM!! You made it back, girl -- good for you!! Here's hoping it nets you a win because I would sure love to send you a book.

And "cuddle and kiss-face" is SO cute and SO wonderful to have, isn't it? It just makes the relationship so much more fun and fresh, no matter the age. Thanks for coming by again, Mirjam, and GOOD LUCK!

  63. Hey, MARTHA, thanks SO much for coming by and for your support, and I am TOTALLY blessed that Marcy and Patrick made a believer out of you as far as knowing there are marriages out there like that, young and old.

To be honest, Marcy and Patrick's storyline is more nonfiction than fiction as it is based on my husband's and my marriage. So much so, in fact that once I had friend over for dinner and she was telling Keith how much she liked A Passion Most Pure. "The only thing that seemed a bit far-fetched," she said, nose in a scrunch, "was the fight scene between Marcy and Patrick when he comes home late at night. I don't know, it just seemed kinda hard to believe," she said. I still remember how Keith calmly took a drink of his Diet Coke and then smiled. "Believe it," he said, lips in a slant.

I cannot tell you how many young women send me letters, so excited that a marriage like that can exist between two flawed human beings, and I tell them YES, it can, because with God in the middle and His precepts applied, it does happen, and I -- and Carrie, Diana and Mirjam, based on their comments above -- are living proof.

Thanks again, Martha, for your support, and if you don't win here, I have ONE MORE giveaway going on this month -- this week, as a matter of fact -- so just check out my website calendar, okay? GOOD LUCK!

  66. I'm so sorry to be arriving late to the party!!! I had so much going on this weekend, but I had to drop by and say this was one of my FAVORITE Julie Lessman books. And I love them all! Her characters all become my best friends. Besides that, Julie and I have decided we are sisters in some other quirky cosmic reality. Waving at you Jules!

  67. MARYLU!!! Just walked in the door from my mother-in-laws, reading Veil of Pearls with a flashlight in the car!! OH MY GOSH!!! I started it about two days ago and only get to read it in the powder room, in the car and at night, but honey, I've been losing LOTS of sleep, because this is hands-down the absolute BEST book you have written so far, and that is saying something because YOU are one of my top three favorite authors, my sweet friend. YOU are who I read when I read for fun. Soooooo good, sooooo beautifully written and soooooo sexy!!! WOW ... about attacked my hubby after reading one scene!! :)

Thanks SO MUCH for coming by. Will have my endorsement SOON AND I GET TO GUSH -- YAY!!! LOVE gushing when I love something SO much!!

    Hugs,
    Julie

  68. This sounds like a good book. I have not read any of Julie's books, but would enjoy having that opportunity with A Heart Revealed.
