Shannon McNear is the author of the historical romance
novella Defending Truth, part of A Pioneer Christmas Collection, and her
first published story longer than a thousand words.
Shannon,
welcome to Overcoming With God. We
appreciate your willingness to share your testimony of overcoming with our
readers.
Would
you tell us about the most difficult thing in your life you have had to
overcome, with God’s help?
I used to think it was the depression, with which I
struggled hugely through my teens and periodically after. Being in my middleish
years now, though, I believe it’s anger. I was handed this legacy of rage by my
family history, and for a long time bought into the lie that my own outbursts
were justified. Eventually, the same thing which helped me overcome childhood
abuse and depression—that anything we’re afflicted with, or tempted to, Jesus
has experienced in some form or another—helped me release the anger. It isn’t
that the wrongs done us are “nothing.” We sin, and we are sinned against, and it’s
a big deal—it’s what sent Jesus to the cross. But He took it in His perfection
and innocence, and paid for it all. If we truly believe that, and that He is
our shield and defender, then we must trust that He’ll make all wrongs right,
in His time.
And in the meantime, I’m responsible for my own actions, and
reactions.
Disability
friendliness: Is this latest release available in audio format or do you have
any other works available on audio? Do
your e-books have audio capability? Do you have any in large print?
Being such a newbie author, I have no idea what Barbour
Publishing intends to do in that department. I hope they’d consider audio
format!
In this
latest work, do you have any topics useful for bibliotherapy, or therapeutic
influence through reading about a disorder or situation?
A big one is combat-induced PTSD, as my hero grapples with
that. I also touch on depression, forgiveness, and grief and loss issues.
Thank
you, Shannon, for agreeing to answer these questions. Have a blessed day and keep on writing!!
Thank you for having me!

Shannon, thank you so much for sharing your testimony with us on OWG! I was also a victim of child abuse, which didn't result in anger issues for me, but I had a ton of other things going on. I've come a long way, thanks to Jesus!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Heidi, I hope you enjoy it! And Diana, you're welcome ... what I wrote looks so short now that it's on the page, but I hope it's helpful. Depression and insecurity were biggies for me, too. Thank the Lord, truly, that He's rescued us!!
ReplyDeleteMe too, Shannon, and major trust issues. Yes, PTL!
DeleteShannon, we are so glad to have you on the blog! Welcome to OWG. Glad you joined us at CACW and are contributing now on CQ, too!

Thank you for the kind words, Mary Lou! Truly God is good ... He knows how to take what we were and shape us into what we are today, as well as what we will become! I could not live if I didn't believe that "all things work together for good." Blessings!

DeleteMy ex husband was abusive with my two daughters.
ReplyDeleteIt was and still can be very hard to get over it
when it comes back into my mind. I didn't know
about it until they got older and it finally came out.
Would love to win this book.
Oops, forgot to leave my e mail address
Deleteseraphinangel7@aol.com
Oh, Juanita, that is very hard. In my experience, it's easier to forgive when the offense was against yourself than against someone you love--especially someone in your care! My prayers are with you and your daughters as you continue this journey. <3

DeleteSHANNON, so cool to have you on OWG! Thanks so much for sharing your testimony with everyone. I could relate quite a bit to it as I also had a rough childhood steeped in anger and physical abuse, and since becoming a Christian when I was almost 20 yrs, God has done so much in me and I am SO thankful to Him that that cycle of abuse & anger was able to stop with me!

ReplyDeleteLooking forward to reading Pioneer Christmas Collection !!! Have a blessed day !!!
Rosemary. rfoley@salemstate.edu
We do, indeed, Rosemary. PTSD is a documented phenomenon since at least Revolutionary War times--probably for all of history. I didn't have as much time and space to explore the issue as I'd like, but I hope you enjoy the story!
DeleteThank you to everyone for your kind comments!
