MEMORIAL DAY by Teresa S. Mathews

Memorial Day

Your memory will be forever honored in my heart
You understood the risk right from the start.

Giving your pledge to protect and serve,
You never once from this honor swerved.

Protecting others was your heart-felt call;
Mothers, Fathers children, you protected them all.

When that moment came, your life you freely gave,
Because of your sacrifice Old Glory still proudly waves.

May the memory of your valor live on in our hearts and lives today,
May we be forever thankful for your love of the USA.

SWEET REVENGE?

Who doesn’t love a beguiling mail-order bride story? But where many brides answer ads in their quest to find happiness and a new life, this bitter bride-to-be seeks only to exact revenge! From bustling New York to the sparse wilderness of Arizona, the prospective bride journeys afar, carrying her cloak of secrecy and resentment—with plans for duplicity and betrayal.

Elizabeth Landvik, once a part of genteel society, has been reduced to sharing a room in a boarding house and toiling for pittance at a sewing factory. Her family’s impoverishment and the subsequent deaths of her parents can be attributed to one man, Lars Forsberg. How it chafes her that he now lives on a sprawling ranch with his son Axel. When she spies a newspaper ad for a mail-order bride for Axel, Elizabeth figures this will be the perfect way to search for her family’s money and give them their comeuppance. Axel Forsberg is initially infuriated his father has arranged a bride for him but warms to the idea especially upon seeing the lovely lady. While his new wife seems to need time to adjust to their union, Axel swiftly loses his heart. But before long, increasingly alarming incidents leave him baffled and troubled.

Mail-Order Revenge is an intriguing and unique take on the mail-order bride theme which makes for a particularly captivating read. This novella is the first I’ve read from Angela K Couch and definitely won’t be the last! Although a novella, it has the fullness of a novel leaving the reader emotionally touched, deeply satisfied, and stirred by the themes of repentance, bitterness and its consequences, and the offering of unmerited grace. A wonderful story!!

Tracy Cooke Wainwright - Testimony of Overcoming

Tracy Cooke Wainwright

We all have challenges. There are certainly times in life when those challenges seem overwhelming. Looking back on the many I've faced, it's interesting how clearly God's hand is revealed.

When considering what to write about, the whole gamut ran through my mind. The eighteen month time period my parents got divorced, moved out of state separately, I graduated high school, started college, and then ran out of money, lost my place to live, got dumped by my fiancé, and couldn't find a job. Then there are the many times I've dealt with depression. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 31. Then there's my current situation: my family of six is living in the upstairs of my in-laws house.

As you can see, there are many trials I've experienced and been brought through by the grace of the Lord. However, the issue that surfaced and I feel led to share about is my chronic back pain.

I remember lower back pain as early as 16. I remember people always telling me I was too young for back pain. I generally replied that I wished they'd tell my back that. My father and I nailed down the initiating incident to when I hyperextended my knee about age 13. As the years continued, a handful of minor traffic accidents seemed to contribute to my discomfort. Then, when my children were little I pulled my back out for the first time. A couple years later, I did it again. And in December 2012 I pulled it out a third time. This is the one that really knocked me down.

I had some speaking commitments the week after. Plus, it happened three weeks before Christmas. That I had a busy schedule would be an understatement. (You know how that time of year can get!) It was the week before Christmas my mom and sister showed up and took over. This meant I was able to do what I should have been doing since day one - staying off my feet. The bigger problem was sitting didn't work. I had to lay down. All the time.

I struggled with both the pain and being basically incapacitated. I watched about as much Netflix as I could stand and still had lots of recovering to do. One day I randomly did a search for Galatians on YouTube. I came across some well-known believers reading the whole book at a conference. It was a blessing! Especially since it led me to listening to two new preachers I didn't know about before.

I didn't want to be flat on my back the weeks before and week after Christmas. I'm not good at doing nothing. However, God used (and I'm thinking maybe even brought me to that place on purpose) that time to speak some powerful things into my life. It started a journey of digging even deeper into scripture. It proceeded some of the deepest growth in my relationship with the Lord that I've ever experienced.

I've never completely recovered. I still deal with back pain almost every day. While I never would have wished it, and would be very grateful for complete healing, God has used it to teach me more about Him. And He's used it to help my ability to have compassion on others.

Hmm. So He's used my injuries and discomfort to teach me to love Him and others better.

In His grace and mercy, He not only upheld His promises and has been with me every step of my pain, but He's also used it to bless me. I'm so grateful I've learned not to dwell on what I don't want to deal with, but instead focus on what He's doing through my circumstances! God has truly used this and other situations to transform my thinking to be more intentional about focusing on Him regardless of what's going on in life.

Endorsement from Author Laura Frantz:

Reviewer Betti Mace: Oh my goodness! Carrie Fancett Pagels has done it again. This story, set in the 1700's, had me sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time. From her position as 'noblesse ancienne', the ancient aristocracy of France, Suzanne had much to look forward to. Her hand in marriage to one of the same aristocracy was expected. Roman Catholicism was considered the only religion in France. Why then, did her parents have to believe differently? The Huguenots were to be killed - would there be any reprieve for her? After all, she had gone to mass with her Grand-mere and even had her rosary.... Would she ever learn that God had a plan for her, not for her family, but for herself? How much would it take and would the young German, Johann, have a part in her finally learning to believe?

Saving the Marquise's Granddaughter is available for pre-order in both ebook (June) and paperback (July) from Amazon, from Pelican Books, and Barnes and Noble.

Giveaway: An ebook copy of Saving the Marquise's Granddaughter. Leave a comment.

Noela reviews THE BEAUTIFUL PRETENDER by Melanie Dickerson

The Beautiful Pretender
Thomas Nelson (May 17, 2016)

Reviewed by Noela Nancarrow

A Medieval Fairy-tale Retelling - The Princess and the Pea meets Beauty and the Beast

Imposing stone castles, wolf-infested forests, and immensely gripping characters—together with treachery, sacrifice, and love, ensures this medieval tale emerging from 1363 in the Holy Roman Empire—is one that seizes the reader instantly from the breathtaking beginning!

Avelina, the beautiful maid-servant to Lady Dorothea of Plimmwald Castle, is forced to go in Dorothea’s stead to the Margrave of Thornbeck’s two-week party—from whence the Margrave will choose a bride from the invited noblewomen. Dorothea’s father, the Earl of Plimmwald, insists Avelina impersonate his daughter to attend the gathering after Dorothea ran away with one of his knights. The Earl fears an attack on his castle from a threatening neighbor and must find favor and an ally with the powerful Margrave. Upon fear of banishment for herself and her family, along with the burden that many lives may be lost upon Plimmwald being defeated, Avelina goes along with the masquerade with no small lack of trepidation.

Avelina is a simple and pure-of-heart maiden, but possesses spunk and is opinionated when it comes to injustice and the downtrodden. I couldn’t help but champion for her. Though she’s meant to merely stay in the background and above all avoid the Margrave choosing her as his wife; the scheme falters as the Margrave becomes captivated with her. Avelina attempts to direct his attentions elsewhere but this becomes increasingly heart-rending when her feelings deepen for this austere but kind-hearted man. She knows a union between a maid and Lord would never be permitted, but even so there is too much at stake for Avelina to even contemplate the possibility. Before the fortnight is spent, a much direr situation than her deception begins to emerge. Can this beautiful pretender help truth and justice to triumph or will all be lost?

Truly, I devoured this medieval feast of treachery and love so gluttonously I’m sure I must have burped at the conclusion! Masterful storyteller Melanie Dickerson, once again delivers upon a feasting platter, an intriguing, original tale with phenomenal characters, exhilarating suspense, and a sigh-worthy romance. Enriching ‘The Beautiful Pretender’ is a meaningful reminder of God’s enduring love and faithfulness. Highly recommended!

"The Innocent" Audiobookby Ann H. Gabhart - Review by Carrie Fancett Pagels

The Innocent by Ann H. Gabhart, Recorded Books audiobook

The Innocent By Ann H. Gabhart
Recorded Books,  2015

I listened to this book via an audible.com download. The narration was good and the story compelling. Ms. Gabhart has eight books available on audible.com. This is a historical Christian fiction book with strong romantic elements, it is not a Christian historical romance.

Carlyn Kearney hasn't given up hope that her husband, Ambrose, might yet return from the Civil War. A Union soldier, he's unaccounted for after a major battle. Waiting in a cabin in the woods, with her trusty dog, Carylyn is feisty and determined. But the horrid man, Mr. Whitlow, who holds the mortgage to her property is trying to compromise her. Sheriff Mitchell Brodie, new to town, suspects what Curt Whitlow is up to but when Carlyn disappears into  Shaker village he has trouble getting information. Poor Caryln had to leave her trusty companion, too, and when the Shakers refuse her beloved pet she has the sheriff take him in.

Sister Edna, quickly becomes a bane to Carlyn. Nothing she does is good enough. The odd Shaker ways are arcane to her and don't fit with the teachings of Christianity she learned growing up with her strict minister family. But there are dark and mysterious goings on at the Shaker village, requiring the handsome sheriff to return. With each visit between Caryln and Mitchell, their feelings for one another grow. But is she still married? Caryln receives some news that changes her life.

The story culminates in a very dark and scary manner for Caryln. There is a death and subsequent grave difficulties for her. One cool thing I loved about this story was how God can use anyone or anything, including pets, to do His will. I've always been intrigued by the Biblical story of the donkey who talked and I have a manuscript that part of the arc was how God can use anything, anyone, any way He wishes and that part of Gabhart's story especially captured my heart!

I think you might be, as I was, creeped out by the teachings of "Mother Ann" of which I had no idea the Shakers believed. A real eye opener of a story!

Bibliotherapy: Loss of spouse, predators, loss of belongings, hope, restoration, and maintaining one's faith.

This book may be purchased through Audible.com,  AmazonCBDBAM, and your local bookstores. I recommend the audible version as it was well done.

GIVEAWAY: A paperback copy of The innocent by Ann H. Gabhart. Answer this question: What do you know about "Mother Ann" of the Shakers and which of Ann H. Gabhart's books have you already read?

Room for Hope by Kim Vogel Sawyer -- Reviewed by Carrie Fancett Pagels

Blurb
In a desperate time, can Neva find forgiveness for a grievous wrong—and make room for hope?

Neva Shilling has a heavy load of responsibility while her husband travels to neighboring communities and sells items from his wagon. In his absence, she faithfully runs the Shilling Mercantile, working to keep their business strong as the Depression takes its toll, and caring for their twins.

When a wagon pulls up after supper, Neva and her children rush out—and into the presence of the deputy driving a wagon carrying three young children. The deputy shocks her with the news that Warren and his wife have died, insisting it was their last request that the three children go live with “Aunt Neva.”

Neva’s heart is shattered as she realizes that Warren’s month-long travels were excuses for visits with his secret family. She wants nothing more than to forget Warren, but can she abandon these innocent children to an orphanage? Yet if she takes them in, will she ever be able to see them as more than evidence of her husband’s betrayal and love them the way God does?

Carrie's Review

Five Stars *****

I listened to this novel as an audible.com download. I have a yearly membership. This story is set in the 1930's, a hard time all across America.  Imagine believing you have a loving husband whose travels for your business turn out to be time spent with another family -- then having the offspring from that other union brought to you to raise during the Great Depression?

This novel has multiple points of view, which I found distracting at first but I think give the story a broader perspective. We have Neva's, her son Bud's, the sheriff's, and a neighbor/suitor's perspectives throughout the book.  Having two adult males, both hero prospects, is something I'm not sure I've seen in other CBA novels.

The narrator has a rather depressed-sounding voice. At the beginning of the book this somewhat works for the story. She does lighten up some as the book goes forward. But I don't hear the hope in her voice that I imagine the author intended, hence the title. Still, if you prefer audiobooks or require them, this is a good listen and you can get past the narration because the story is compelling.

Room for Hope is a great read by Kim Vogel Sawyer, with many unique elements. I highly recommend it.

Bibliotherapy elements: Death of a spouse, bigamy, illegitimate children, raising someone else's children, financial struggles, hope in Christ, and being shunned by "friends." I think this story is also good for bibliotherapy for someone who is feeling a little down as the tone of the book won't grate on you like it might if you were in a really chipper mood.

Question: Have you read any of Kim Vogel Sawyer's other books? Which ones?

Noela reviews HER ONE AND ONLY by Becky Wade

Her One and Only
Bethany House Publishers (April 26, 2016)

Reviewed by Noela Nancarrow
5 Stars *****

Ingenious, intriguing, and absolutely irresistible! Becky Wade, surely the Queen of Contemporary romance, delivers a tale that generates sparks on every page within ‘Her One and Only!’ A romance that sizzles, a foreboding mystery that baffles, and a powerful and emotive theme of trusting God—all barely even begin to reveal what an enjoyable tale that the ‘one and only’ author Becky Wade has created.

When the Mustang’s popular football star Gray Fowler continues to receive escalating threats from an unknown source, he is assigned an around the clock security team. The brawny, macho, chauvinistic player scoffs at one of his protection agents—a lithe, attractive woman named Dru. But the former marine who’s also a black belt, surprises him by her determination and persistent immunity to his charms. Gray is drawn to this leather-clad ‘super-hero’ but because of his tormented childhood and his parent’s dismal example, he’s sworn off love and commitment. On the other side of things, feisty and confident Dru has a career-tarnished reputation and is fiercely determined to prove herself on the job. And that means no matter how alluring this big football guy is, she will keep everything strictly business. Plus, she has a client she needs to keep alive from a deadly stalker. Can she achieve both?

The electrifying chemistry between Gray and Dru is testimony to the strength of their personalities. Author Becky Wade has nailed it by creating two intricate and flawed characters that connected perfectly—even while irritating each other! It was pure delight watching Dru and Gray’s resistance to each other crack, and witnessing how they bounced off one another with their combined wit. Behind my smiles, however, hovered an edgy uncertainty surrounding the identity of the stalker. The mystery of the anonymous assailant kept me guessing and in suspense constantly. Complimenting the romance and suspense is a touching, inspirational thread on the heartbreaking struggle and anguish of infertility and miscarriage. And of the very real difficulties to trust God fully for life, for love, and for courage. Highly recommended!

Caryl McAdoo -- "Fluffy be Gone"

Fluffy be Gone
By Caryl McAdoo

No Fluffy isn’t my cat or pet bunny. It’s what I’ve been since in my teens with a few brief respites. Praise the Lord that my sweetheart said he prefers fluffy. I weighed one hundred sixty pounds at sixteen when we met and gained twenty by the time we married two years later. All my life—up to a point about thirty years ago—I’ve fought this fluffy stuff.
Back in the 80s, in my thirties, I gave up the fight.  Got with my Father and made some changes, wanting to accept me and like me just the way He made me. I can’t imagine why I ever thought I could improve on His creation and plan for His daughter.
I quit cutting, curling, and coloring my hair. No more make-up for me either—ever. I also told Him I was done dieting. That I would be obedient and if Holy Spirit said, “Don’t eat that” I wouldn’t. And so, we rocked along happy together. He continued to bless me. My hair grew longer which my husband loved.
For a while, several years, I did alright. We got the grandsugar boys (took in four in 2002, ages 6, 4, 3, and newborn) and inherited twelve quarter horses. Both additions put more exercise into my life. But then, when we got all the little fellers in school and I started sitting at the computer all day writing…my weight went up.
And up and up.
One time that I spoke with Abba about it, I said, “But I hardly eat anything fattening. This isn’t fair.”
Holy Spirit came back at me. I love God’s sense of humor. He asked, “But what do you drink?” Huh? My sweet tea? So I fasted that summer, nothing but water and lost a little more.
Then in July of last year, my brother-in-law visited and had lost fifteen or twenty pounds. He shared a high protein/low carb/no sugar weight loss program with Ron and I and offered to help us get started if we’d commit. It was about a thousand a month for both of us. But we committed and got started, believing God was in it.
The weight literally fell off. And we were eating so much more healthy. To hike the results, I started drinking Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) water too…no more sugar sweetened tea…I use stevia. Four cups of vegetables a day (plus some) eight ounces of protein plus other protein in shakes, bars, and even pancakes!

Thanks to Walden Farms’ sugarfree syrup and other products, I’ve never felt deprived, and certainly not starved. As of this date, I’m seventy pounds lighter, and I know that I’ll never ever weigh two hundred and fifty-seven pounds again. It’s helped so much with pains and energy and stamina.
As in all things I do, I give God the glory…for bringing the high protein/low carb/no sugar model into our lives, then showing us a less expensive way to keep going using the same protocol. He has led me every step of the way, and told me what not to put in my mouth. I turn sixty-six in less than a month and still plan to lose about thirty more pounds—at least.
It has been a lifelong issue, and with God’s help, I have been able to overcome it. He’s strengthened me on days I was weak and encouraged me to keep going when I’d get stuck on plateaus…I’m on one now, but still committed. I have no doubt that I’ll reach my goal of losing one hundred pounds.
And my most precious prince of a husband lost over fifty pounds, too—much more healthy on our hearts and everything. Extra weight can be so detrimental to our wellbeing. I would never ever want to make anyone feel bad about extra weight. I rejoice when friends post they’ve lost weight, and am thankful to God for helping me join their ranks!

Giveaway: I'm giving away a paperback copy of Sins of the Mothers, one of Caryl's many wonderful books.
