Perfectly Inspiring...

My life pretty much came to a full-stop when reading this thoroughly absorbing and lavishly entertaining novel! This seamless and non-formulaic story is narrated by and told from the character Kate Meadow’s perspective. Listening to Kate's heartfelt and humorous inner voice tell her story, the reader is given an amazing insight to the running feelings and thoughts of Kate. If you've ever experienced insecurities and self-condemnation, you’ll no doubt hear yourself in Kate’s thoughts. How amazing is it then, to be able to take a step back and look at ourselves afresh, and with such candor?

Kate Meadows, a successful San Francisco mural artist, has decided once again to throw in the towel on finding ‘Mr. Right’ and resolves to become content with being single. Well she had for all of about 5 minutes, until not one but two handsome eligible bachelors drop into her life! In one corner we have Dr Clive Alexander whose mere innocent touch delivers currents within her and is a Brad Pitt look-alike though maybe a little less tousled. Unfortunately he was heard agreeing with her friend Beau that she wasn't much to look at. And in the other corner, there’s Michael Palmier, a nationally known make-up artist who shows an increasing interest in the less than perfect Kate, rather than her physically perfect flatmate Maia. However, he continues to give Kate suggestions for self-improvement. Which of these men, if any, will give her what she really needs?

As much as the almost 30 year old Kate longs to fully embrace being single, she also desires a deeply loving marriage. As a result of Kate’s own insecurities and so much focus currently on her appearance, she decides it’s time to begin making improvements on herself. While focusing on the outward appearance however, Kate is neglecting her faith and overlooking God’s guidance. Will Kate’s misplaced focus on perfecting herself grant the outcome she craves? Or will her secrets, and distrust in love and God’s wisdom, be her undoing?

Author Tamara Leigh is a master at dialogue and storytelling. I was in awe reading Kate’s amusing and eloquent thoughts and reflections on love and faith, witnessing, her failures, and her dreams and hopes. And I was regaled with Kate’s hilarious take on people and situations. She was sassy and sweet, authentic, sometimes quirky, and her prayers at the end of each chapter were delightfully candid. I recommend everyone go on this life-changing journey with Kate and discover how true beauty is only found on the inside and that God loves us as we are! Highly recommended!

  1. NOELA, this is such a wonderfully entertaining and beautifully written review on an issue that is so prevalent in our society today. I have seen pics of young girls the age of 12 on Facebook posing provocatively in spiked heels! Many young women think they should look like the next super model and "eat" themselves skinny. I'm (AHEM) yrs. old and I'm still not pleased with my body image and don't dare you drop by if I'm w/out makeup. I know God loves me the way I am, but others don't if you don't take care of yourself. So where to draw the line before it becomes an obsession? I would love a chin tuck btw for my beginning to sag jawline and neck. And liposuction for these thighs! I think I need to read this book! haha Thanks for the lovely, insightful review!

    1. Thank you Diana!! It really is sad how young girls are encouraged to 'grow up' so quickly these days... And that there is so much emphasis on their body image! Becoming too obsessed with their bodies is especially dangerous for young girls, affecting them both physically and psychologically in many cases. In 'Perfecting Kate', Kate gets on the slippery slope of always trying for that elusive perfection... thinking it will help her find happiness and love. As for us lol, I wouldn't mind a little nip and tuck in a couple places, but let's just keep that between us. I'm thankful that at our age though, we have learnt the value of real beauty is.

  3. Thanks for your beautiful review of "Perfecting Kate", Noela!! Sounds like a delightful story and a spiritual lesson for all women, young or old. I feel sure God will use this novel to impress, on some of it's readers, the importance of true internal beauty - rather than outward, and His love for each woman, regardless of her outward beauty.

  6. A nip, a tuck, a lipo...nah. That's just saying you hava a poor self image, which seems to be what the book is trying to counter. Bravo to Tamela for approaching a much needed subject.
Love you ladies just the way you are--Daughters of the King!!!!

    1. Exactly right, Anne! My nip and tuck would actually be from an operation that was sown up badly, but thankfully I can keep it hidden... And the thing is, God nor hubby loves me any less because it's not what matters! None of us will ever be perfect physically wise, but how great that God sees us perfect through His son. Thanks for coming by, I think you'll love this book, Anne! Love you too!

  7. Great review Noela. This sounds like a good book with lots of spiritual lessons we can take with us too. I can relate with Kate regarding being insecure and not having the "perfect" body society sure thinks we should have. Thank God, He loves me just as I am....and so does my wonderful husband!
    Blessings, Tina
