Cynthia Howerter interview

Cynthia Howerter, welcome to Overcoming With God.  We appreciate your willingness to share your testimony of overcoming with our readers.
Thank you for having me!  It’s a pleasure to be here.

Would you tell us about the most difficult thing in your life you have had to overcome, with God’s help?
I’ve had a years-long struggle with trusting God to take care of my problems.  As an adult, no matter what adversity happened in my life, I prayed about the problem and asked God to take care of it, and then turned right around and tried to manage the situation on my own.  I didn’t believe that God could handle my problems as well as I could.  A dear Christian friend told me that it was like I put my problem inside a helium balloon, told God about the problem and asked Him for help, and then as I let go of the balloon string to hand my problem over to God, I grabbed the string back and tried to fix the problem on my own—with most unsatisfactory results.  Finally, God put me in a position where my husband’s 2-year bout of unemployment made me completely dependent upon God for everything—food, shelter, clothing, and money.  I had no control over anything in my life.  Slowly, I learned that God can be trusted to handle every situation I encounter.  The lessons I learned during our extended unemployment were extremely painful, but once I learned to fully trust God to do what is best for me, it was tremendously freeing.

The publisher plans to offer God’s Provision in Tough Times as an e-book soon but, for now, it’s only available as a paperback in regular print.

In this latest work, do you have any topics useful for bibliotherapy, or therapeutic influence through reading about a disorder or situation?
God’s Provision in Tough Times is an anthology containing 25 true stories that detail how God provided for each writer during their darkest moments of unemployment and financial difficulties.  Each story describes specific problems the writer faced, such as the loss of their home or the stresses of unemployment on their family, and the ways in which God provided for whatever they encountered.  Each reader should come away with an understanding that no matter what adversity they face, God is able to provide for their every need whether it’s emotional, spiritual, or physical.

  1. CYNTHIA, thank you for being here and for sharing your struggles with us on OWG this week. I think I can speak for everyone in saying that we have all placed our troubles in the hands of Jesus and grabbed them right back again. He either wasn't answering fast enough, or not quite the way we thought He should! I am so struggling with that now as I'm fighting through a health issue.

Everyone here needs to know what a sweet lady you are, as I found out when we "met" over the phone! What a wonderful conversation we enjoyed together and what a funny, kind lady you are. Congrats on the publication of your book! I'm sure it has and will continue to be a blessing to alot of people!

  2. CYNTHIA I want to welcome you to OWG and say thank you for sharing with us. I can identify about wanting to fix the things I've given over to the Lord. It takes a lot of faith to let go and let God but oh the rewards when we do. Thanks again for being with us! Looking forward to reading your book.

  3. Hello Cynthia, I'd like to extend a warm welcome to OWG also! I really enjoyed reading your overcoming testimony as it reminded me of the time we went through a similar experience when my husband was out of work. And now when I look back I'm so glad for that time... like yourself, I learnt to stop struggling and to trust our Provider, and it was just amazing to see His provision!! :) Your book sounds like an awesome faith-building anthology!

    1. Hi, Noela! I didn't realize until recently how many people also struggle/struggled with trusting God to handle all of our situations, so I really appreciate you mentioning that you've experienced this, too. I hope you'll drop me a line and let me know how you like "God's Provision in Tough Times."

  5. That is my kinda book to read .I love to read testimonies on how God shows up and shows off for those who belong to Him .The Holy Spirit keeps reminding me of this Bible verse lately .God knows what I need when I need it .He is a on time God He may not come when I want Him, But He'll be there right on time. He's an on time God .
1 Corinthians 10:13 "No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it." Blessings ,Dana

    1. Greetings, Dana! I love testimony books, too! You surely won't be disappointed with the stories in God's Provision in Tough Times. Each of the writer's stories are candidly written, exposing their trials through adversity, and the incredible ways in which God provided for their needs.

  6. Welcome, CYNTHIA! So nice to have met you at BRMCWC :) Thanks for sharing your testimony with us.

Scripture tells us He is a faithful God, in all things. So glad you learned to trust him no matter the circumstance. The enemy likes nothing better than for Believers to try and take back the string. I have had this lesson reinforced over the last year that HE never lets go, therefore I am hanging on tighter every day, clinging to His promises!

So happy you and La Tan have had this book published. I look forward to reading it one day.

    1. Hi, Anne! I enjoyed meeting you at the Blue Ridge! Glad you learned to let go of the string, too - it may take a while for some of us to learn not to grab it back, but once we learn how to do give God the string, our lives are much richer.

  7. Yes, I think we have all tried to pull that string back, so we could "fix things" and we all need reminder's sometimes to let go and let God!
This sounds like a great book of encouragement, & I would love to win a copy to share with my oldest son, as he is struggling right now (extended unemployment with no compensation available to him, except recently some food stamps, plus his wife filing for divorce doesn't help either).

    1. Vicki, I'm so sorry to hear of the tough times your son is going through right now. I do hope he receives a copy of "God's Provision in Tough Times" because I believe its true stories will help him see that others have been in equally dire situations and made it successfully through with God's help. God is an on-time God, providing what we need when we need it. Nothing is impossible when we keep God first in our lives.

    1. Susan, thanks for sharing your struggles with me. One thing that helped me learn to give God control of my life was by asking this question: "Do I believe that God can get me out of _____ - or do I not believe He can do what He says He can?" The truth is, God can do all He says He can. He can provide for all of our needs. He can give us a job when we're jobless. He can provide another home after we've had to give ours up. Even when everyone else says God cannot do these things, He CAN. How do I know? Because He has done each of these things and more for me. I do hope you are able to read "God's Provision in Tough Times" - because I believe its powerful stories will help you stop struggling with control. You can overcome this.
