                                          Heartwarming Yuletide Tale!

In A Wreath of Snow, Liz Curtis Higgs pens a tender, heartwarming yuletide novella set against the backdrop of 1800s Scotland, where blustery snowstorms and the smell of freshly cut evergreens hang heavily in the air.

Our lovely heroine, Margaret Campbell wishes only to return home to Stirling to enjoy a warm Christmas with her family, but is driven away by the bitterness and apathy of her younger brother, Alan. Alan has been confined to a wheelchair ever since an accident that occurred when he was a young lad has left him paralyzed, and his mean spirited ways drive Meg back to Edinburgh where she holds a teaching position.

As Meg boards the train to return to Edinburgh, she meets a handsome young newspaperman named Gordon Shaw, and as their lives intertwine her destiny is forever changed. Gordon struggles under a load of remorse and shame that he has born for years, and should Meg find out why -- what will become of the feelings she is beginning to develop for him? And as the heavy snowfall continues to build -- will the train make it to Edinburgh or will a disaster ensue, causing long buried, dark secrets to finally come to light?

Liz Curtis Higgs is a masterful storyteller, and this powerful story of forgiveness and redemption is a wonderful way to usher in the Christmas season. Heartwarming, with compelling and well developed characters, and a very strong spiritual thread throughout, this one is the perfect "sitting by a crackling fire with a cup of hot chocolate" read! Nicely done as always, Liz Curtis Higgs!

Liz's awesome books can be purchased through CBD, Amazon, and Lifeway Christian Bookstore.

Giveaway: We will be giving away two Liz Curtis Higgs' books this week. Leave a comment for a chance to win.

Question: The main theme of this book is forgiveness. Is there someone you need to forgive this Christmas season to start the New Year off right? Perhaps yourself?

  1. How I love the cover of this book, it illustrates the story so well with a simple beauty :)

My goodness, Diana, you did such a great job with this review and of course I enjoyed the decorative title as well! The story will definitely prompt its readers to sit by a warming fire with a cup of hot chocolate, for sure!

Please don't enter me in the giveaway, I already have a copy and it's one of my favorite Christmas reads this year :) For me, though, anything Liz Curtis Higgs writes is considered a treasure.

LOVED the theme of forgiveness in the story and it's captured so well with the characters! Higgs manages to bring a fresh perspective of forgiveness in this wonderful tale :)

Forgiveness is something I deal with on a daily basis, both with myself as well as with others in my life. However, God continuously walks me through this process and encourages me every step of the way. May we continue to bestow forgiveness and walk in it to the glory of God who makes ALL things possible!!

Hug and blessings all around ladies!!

    1. Hugs and blessings back to you, KARA! What a wonderful comment and thank you for showing your support for Liz's books.

Yes, most of the time forgiveness is an everyday choice, b/c as Joyce Meyer so aptly put it, "It's a strange thing about people. They're everywhere!" And some that come in our lives aren't quite as nice as others! lol But we MUST forgive and go on! Tough sometimes, but as you have said, KARA, God will enable us!

    2. AMY that is so sad that you don't have a relationship with your dad. I so hope you will be able to make the first step in reaching out to him. Perhaps you could let your children make grandpa a Christmas card and maybe you could slip a note in telling him you miss him? My dad passed away 16 1/2 years ago and what I wouldn't give to be able to talk to him. Dear Amy is hurts me so to think that you aren't able to speak with your dad. I will pray that the bonds that are keeping you two apart will be broken and that love will be restored between you. I am praying for you, you are making the first step already by sharing this with us. May God Bless You and give you the courage you need! :)

    3. Praying God will put His angels around you, Amy. Forgiving is something we MUST do to restore a right relationship with God. I don't mean forgetting, especially if someone has done something and you must shield your children from that, but real forgiveness in the heart brings us back to our Lord's arms, who has forgiven us of so much. It doesn't validate your father's behavior. It only puts you back in your heavenly Father's one on one communication without something breaking the connection!!!

  3. DIANA you always amaze me with your reviews, GREAT JOB!! Liz has really caputured the true meaning of Christmas with this beautiful story.

What a great question, I have had several things in my life where I have been hurt by others and had to forgive them. Normally I'm the type of person that can forgive rather easily because I've found when you hold onto unforgiveness you only cause harm to yourself.

Forgiveness for me is a tricky one because each time a deep hurt comes up regarding an ongoing situation and brings the emotions with it, I wonder if I have forgiven. I can only trust in the Lord with it, and I do know He's brought me far already.. :)

    1. Thank you, NOELA! Forgiveness is an act of FAITH not of feelings, so if you have put forth that effort, I believe God in His time and His way will remove the hurt. It's alot tougher when it's an ongoing situation, I know, and we just have to ask the Lord to help us forgive with His forgiveness for we are but fleshly humans. Thanking God for how far He has brought you already!

I so know how to pray for you concerning your siblings. I have four of them and there is barely no communication between any of us. I have to rely on hubby's family for family, although my sis and I are close. I have done what I can do. Now it is in God's hands. Like you, dear, I don't really understand. Life is just too short and family is the most important thing after God.

I won't go into details, but it is an ongoing circumstance that I have no relief from. Christ gives me the strength and grace to release my offense and forgive them daily, and I know that He is working out His will in the midst of this difficult trial, both for my good, and the good of my family.

  11. Beautiful Old-Fashioned Victorian Cover Picture !!! I love Victorian Christmas in Scotland and England !!! When I think of Christmas in Scotland and England, I think of A Christmas Carol, plum pudding, wassail and hot chocolate, sleigh rides and skating in the pond at the park and take a stroll and look at the window displays of the Christmas villages and characters coming alive at the department stores / that will bring our heartwarming memories back !!!
Forgiveness is what Christmas is all about. Christmas is Love !!! Families and Friends reconcile and forgive each other. Forgiveness is not an easy task. It takes an effort to forgive someone you really love. We need each other for love and support. Life is short. Spending time with family and friends around the major holidays are important. I want to forgive my mother and my brother whom I love very much. Big issues over my Dad and my stepmother. It is hard to forgive but once it is forgiven and love comes back again. Past is past that we can not chane bur we need to move on to renew lives. Every moment is previous !!! Life is beautiful !!!
    Happy Holidays !!! Kim

    1. JASMINE, that is too cute -- the memory of an elephant. :) I wish I had that! lol Unfortunately it seems as though the negative things are what we remember alot more than the positive. And that's b/c we have an enemy of our souls that loves to bring to mind things that bother and hinder us. So it is an ongoing struggle, but greater is He that is in US than He that is in the world!

    1. PAM, I'm so sorry. Oh, honey, please forgive yourself. If we don't forgive ourselves (this was a life changing revelation for me), we are in essence saying Jesus blood was not enough for us and we must continue to bear guilt and shame. It took me years to learn this but once I got it in my spirit I forgave myself immediately.

Father, we ask you to help PAM right now to forgive herself and to release her guilt to you. Reassure her, dear Lord, that You have forgiven her and have already bore her guilt on the cross so that she doesn't have to carry this burden on her shoulders anymore. Give her peace over this situation and we ask it in the precious name of Jesus! Amen!

  25. Diana, what a great review of A Wreath of Snow. Liz is a great author. This will be going on my must have books list!

I am going through a family issue right now where I have been shunned by half of my family members. My step-mom told lies about me and I can't understand why they were so readily believed by half of my family. I can't defend myself against what she said because I have no clue what was said behind my back. From a FB post against me from another family member I can only guess it was pretty bad. I have been judged, tried, and declared guilty by them. I have been more hurt than bitter by this. In fact, I hold no bitterness, grudges, or anything else against my step-mom. What I do know is our Heavenly Father knows the truth. I will continue to pray for those who hurt me.

  26. I would love, love, LOVE to win this book! :) And as to the question you posted, I actually believe I do need to forgive myself. I was in a bad relationship at the beginning of this year and it caused much strife in my family. I allowed a wall to come up between me and my mother, who had always been my best friend, and it took a huge toll on our relationship. The bad relationship has ended, praise be to God, and I am very happy and thankful to say that the Lord also restored my relationship with my mother. I've forgiven the man for how he treated me, and I know God has forgiven me for the decision I made in even getting involved in the relationship, but now I think it's time I stopped blaming myself for everything that happened, and stop fearing that it will happen again. For any other young women that may have had a similar situation, my prayers are with you!

    1. NANCEE, once you have asked God's forgiveness, the rest is easy! It took me yrs to learn this life changer that a preacher brought to my attention one day. He said if we won't forgive ourselves, then we are saying that though Jesus shed every drop of his life's blood it wasn't enough for us. From that day forward I forgave myself and thought about my major failures no more. Do I search my life everyday? -- yes. But no more unforgiveness for my past. His blood WAS enough!

Nancee, we love seeing you here and I'm hoping you'll get a chance to read Liz's new Christmas book!

  28. What a question...its one thing to consider asking or giving forgiveness to some one, but you turned it around to consider if we need to forgive ourselves? Wow!

But to address it about forgiving someone, I struggle to do that. I grew up in a family where if u mess up, that was your one chance (at least with my bro. and dad). They're not christians. When my son went to prison 5 yrs ago, that was the last time they asked about him. I know they dont know Gods love but common sense should still let u love folks. My husband and I just keep praying for them and to not let my heart be like theirs.

    1. MELODY, you brought up an interesting point. Just b/c people do things we don't like we still love them with God's love. I was abused as a child in every way and I CHOSE to forgive, but the feelings of love weren't exactly there yet. But God's love which is different than our fleshly love WAS there. So we really can't measure if we have truly forgiven someone by our feelings. Unless we have feelings of bitterness and that has to be prayed away for sure! You are doing the right thing by continuing to love others, Melody, "in spite of!"

  29. Great interview Diana. I have never read one of Liz's books, but you make me want this one very much. I also love Christmas and christmas stories. Forgiveness is not always easy when the hurt is deep. I have never wanted to hold on to it and give up my relatives or friends. And, I still love them very much, but still think of what was said now and then. It is myself that is harder to forgive. Doing something against my upbringing and God's teaching, wondering how I could ever do that. Then when I lose a family member, thinking I should have done some things better, like getting upset with my precious husband during the time of being his caregiver, and then being so sorry. Things you wish you could take back. I know GOD has forgiven me, but still wish it hadn't happened. Or, not calling someone as often as I should have. These are things we think of when it is to late to correct. So glad we have a forgiving GOD. Maxie ( mac262@me.com )

    1. MAXIE, satan is an accuser of the brethern. He puts those thoughts in our heads so that we will feel guilty and unworthy all the time. The antidote to ridding oneself of those feelings is to ask the Lord to forgive you, which I know you do, trust that His blood was enough to cover your guilt, release them to Him and let them go! When satan brings them up again tell him to get thee behind you, b/c you are not listening to him anymore! Amen and hallelujah!

Forgiveness has always be a tough thing for me. I experienced a painful situation with a couple of friends a few years ago and in my heart I have forgiven them, but sometimes reminders come back to haunt me and I know that is probably Satan taunting me. I just pray for God's guidance and grace during those times. I am no longer friends with them - it just would never work, but I have moved on with my life and God has helped me in dealing with the pain and hurt from that experience.
